The acting job by Ty Loney is worthy of an Academy Award. Seriously, this is the best acting job that I have seen in college hockey this season. I am sorry, but Loney rolls around on the ice like he's been shot, then miraculously recovers to score the goal on the five-minute power-play. I didn't think this was worthy of a five-minute power play.

UND took DU to the proverbial woodshed last night, and dominated DU. In my opinion, it wasn't even close. UND head coach Dave Hakstol talks about playing on their toes. UND was on their toes all-game long and had DU on their heels for most of the night. This was the best effort that I have seen from UND this season, bar none. Also, we have to give have to give UND goalie Clarke Saunders credit, he was simply amazing stopping 29-of-31 shots and the defenders in front of him were very good when they had to be. UND game into the game going 1-for-18 on the power play went 2-4 tonight. In the last 12 games against DU, UND is 9-3-1.

UND Hockey: Clarke Saunders to take Center Stage.

Coming into the weekend, there is some concern. UND lost their starting goaltender Zane Gothberg to the dreaded lower lower-body injury and will miss him for 2-to-3 weeks.

I know some of the fans are concerned about losing Gothberg, but Clarke Saudners hasn’t been all that bad in his career against Denver. What I am saying is don’t panic yet. Last season, Saunders played in 26-of-42 games last season compiling a 13-9-4 record, had a 230 GAA and a .917 save percentage.

Obviously, Saunders numbers haven’t been that great this season (2-2-0, 3.60 GAA and a .900 save percentage), but he’s not a bad goaltender either. Saunders is a seasoned goaltender and the guys are behind him and trust him.

For his career, against DU, Sanders has a (3-2-1, 2.83 GAA, .904 SV%), with UND his record is 2-1-1. He was also 1-1 with Alabama Huntsville. When Saunders gives up 3 or fewer goals, his record is 3-0-1.

UND HOCKEY: UMN vs. UND in an Outdoor Game?

Here’s something interesting from Charlie Walters daily column, yes I know, it’s Shooter. But Walters does make a good point. If Minnesota and Ohio State can make $350,000.00 for an outdoor game, I would imagine that could make more money with an attractive match-up like North Dakota versus Minnesota in an non-conference outdoor hockey game.

Can you imagine the number of fans that would probably want to see this event? I think you could definitely sell 50,000+ tickets for UND vs. UMN in an outdoor hockey game. The two teams haven’t played for a season and there’s the possibility they might go two or three more years without playing. Tickets could be in high demand.

The University of Minnesota's share from its recent outdoor hockey games will be about $350,000. When the Gophers, whose men's team hosted Ohio State last week, host another outdoor game, North Dakota will be sought as the opponent. (Shooter)

I talked about this subject last week on the Hockey Wilderness.

If you're going to schedule a high-profile event like this, you should at least schedule it against a more attractive opponent. I am just throwing it out there. This event would have been more appropriate for an opponent like the Wisconsin Badgers, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans or another heated rival. I would have even suggested North Dakota. In my opinion, last year's Hockey City Classic between Wisconsin and Minnesota was way more entertaining, than this year’s Hockey City Classic.

It doesn't sound like Golden Gopher head coach Don Luica was all that excited about having another outdoor game anytime soon.

Lucia, however, demurred when asked whether the Gophers should play another outdoor game and instead lobbied the NHL to schedule one at TCF Bank Stadium.

"I think we'll wait for a while now," Lucia said. "Quite frankly, the next team that deserves to play this is the Wild."

The president of the Minnesota Twins would like to see the Minnesota and North Dakota faceoff in an outdoor game at Target Field sooner rather than later. I think that's one outdoor game that I would like to see.

Oneida Indians to meet with U.N. over Redskins name

It's an interesting story, but the UN has no power in our country. I am not sure what they could possibly do in this situation? If the Washington Redskins don't have any intention of changing their names, I am not sure what the UN could or would do. The UN has no power to compel people in the USA to do anything. Thoughts?

Erik Bradly, USA Today -- The Oneida Indian Nation is scheduled to meet with human rights representatives of the United Nations on Friday to discuss the Washington NFL club's team name - and the team says the U.N. should be working on world peace.

Oneida Nation representative Ray Halbritter is set to speak with Ivan Simonovic, Assistant Secretary-General for Human Rights at the U.N. in New York, just as the National Football League is preparing for its seminal event, the Super Bowl, with events in New York and northern New Jersey all next week.

UND vs. DU Time to renew the rivalry with our old friends

Good times, I think Kyle Radke is the only UND player that I can remember getting into two fights in one game. I think that's unprecedented. UND and Denver this weekend and if you have DirecTV, you will be able to see both games. My question, is referee Todd Anderson going to ref the games this weekend? I think it would only be fitting. Just for the record, UND is 8-3-1 against the Denver no-names in the last 11 games.

Friday’s game will be telecast live nationally on CBS Sports Network, which is also available on DirecTV (channel 221) and DISH Network (channel 158). Ben Holden handles the play by play and will be joined by analyst Dave Starman and rinkside reporter Shireen Saski... (UND Athletics).

One low spot for the series is there's no more Denver coach George Gwozdecky. The guy was a character. I am sure that UND and DU fans will find someone to dislike.

Last weekend the RedHawks split with the Mavericks (2-2sow, 5-1L) in Oxford and the Tigers tied and lost to the Providence Friars (2-2ot, 7-2) in Colorado Springs.

Who would have thought that Miami would be one point ahead of the last place team in January? The RedHawks need a sweep this weekend if they want to try and salvage this season. The Tigers are in the same boat as the RedHawks, they need points, and fast. This is a chance to get back into a race for home ice in the first round, get swept and uh-oh, you’re all by yourself in the basement. RedHawks Sweep.

#18 North Dakota @ #16 Denver

Last weekend NoDak tied (in Bemidji) and beat (in Grand Forks) the Beavers (1-1, 4-2) and the Pioneers split with the Bulldogs (3-2Wot, 2-2sol) in Duluth.

These longtime rivals get to renew their acquaintances this weekend in Denver. But now DU has a new head coach in this series, the first time since Hakstol took over at UND nine years ago. I don’t predict any “fighting” in this series since they are tied in the standings and no one wants to be suspended for a game. NoDak is playing well as of late and so is Denver. SPLIT

Minnesota Cup Tournament

MSU-Mankato (14-10-0) vs UMD (9-9-2)

Last weekend the Mavericks swept the Ferris State Bulldogs (6-2, 4-3) in Mankato and the Bulldogs split with the Pioneers (3-2Lot, 2-2sow) in Duluth.

With this being a tournament and in-state bragging rights it’s safe to say all the teams will be playing to win this thing. I’m going with the Mavericks, just because they have some momentum in their corner. MAVERICKS WIN

#5 SCSU (12-4-4) vs #1 Minnesota (17-2-3)

Last weekend the Huskies were swept by the Broncos (5-5sol, 2-1) in St. Cloud and the Gophers swept the Buckeyes (1-0, 4-2) in Minneapolis.

The Huskies will be looking to bounce back this weekend and prove they are one of the elite teams in the country. And if they knock of the Gophers that will prove they belong in the top five. HUSKIES WIN

The winners play each other and the losers play each other on Saturday. So if my Friday night predictions are correct, that would end up with SCSU versus MSU-M for the championship and UMD vs UM for third place. MSUM wins the title and UM takes third.

First off, for the person that made the quip about Brad not reporting on this story, Hakstol can't comment about any recruit that hasn't signed a letter of intent. So, that's that...

Lastly, historically, said beat writer likes to stir the pot when it comes to UND fans.

Mike Chambers, Denver Post --- According to Smith’s father and several friends of the Smith family, Landon Smith was asked to replace North Dakota freshman Adam Tambellini, who left school this month to play major-junior for the Calgary Hitmen. Tambellini was a third-round draft pick last June and Smith could make a small fortune as an NHL free agent — judging from his 37 goals in 45 games for the Salmon Arm Silverbacks.

ooo … is Smith going to play AGAINST Denver this weekend? No, his father said, because Landon plans on keeping his commitment to Quinnipiac and refuses to run out on his Salmon Arm teammates.

Character folks! Landon Smith had an unbelievable opportunity to invisibly point his middle finger at DU by playing against the Pioneers this weekend, but he’s not taking it and going with his natural instinct of honoring his word.

Make no mistake, I’m not bashing Montgomery. Gwozdecky’s successor has every right to bring in his “own” guys and Smith never signed a letter of intent (because Gwozdecky’s word, at the time when he was the coach, was golden), and Montgomery’s “own” guys coming in next fall must be exactly what he wants because he currently has just two seniors, thus scholarship money is extremely tight.

UND Hockey: Zane Gothberg out for a couple of weeks with injury

The University of North Dakota will face some more adversity this weekend against the University of Denver. Sophomore goalie Zane Gothberg was injured in practice yesterday and is out indefinitely.

Gothberg has been pretty solid this season and has racked up some decent numbers during the nine-game unbeaten streak. From Schlossman, "Goaltender Zane Gothberg, who has started all of the games in the streak, has a 1.76 goals-against average and a .923 save percentage."

For the season, Gothberg has a line of (10-5-3, 2.20 GAA and a .916 save percentage). The sophomore goalie is third in the NCHC in wins, fourth in the NCHC in save percentage, and third in the NCHC in goals against average.

UND will be without Gothberg, at minimum, for a couple weeks. He has started every game in UND's 9-game unbeaten streak.

Tortorella and Hartley have a history

Here's a good read that kind of puts the John Tortorella and Bob Hartley incident into perspective. Apparently, the two guys have a history going back to the AHL. I thought I would share it with you.

Kevin Oklobzija, Democrat and Chronicle --- "They know how to push each other's buttons pretty well," Nichol said this morning.

It has been 18 1/2 years since the first Tortorella/Hartley encounter and time surely hasn't made the hearts grow fonder. Tortorella does, however, remain steadfast in his commitment to his team.

So why didn't Tortorella defuse the situation against the Canucks by putting out a skill line? Why exacerbate the matter by choosing to deploy your set of nuclear weapons against the Hartley starters? Is someone really going to jump the Sedin twins?

"Is someone going to jump Phil Kessel," Nichol countered. "John Scott did (in the Sabres-Maple Leafs preseason game)."

"Players respect that he (Tortorella) has their back," Nichol said. "As a player, you rally around that. It's been his M.O. for a long time: us against the world. The team is an inner circle and if anyone outside that inner circle tries to interfere, he erupts."

The Hartley M.O. hasn't changed much either: He loves his tough-guys and wants his team to be nasty and abrasive.

"Hartley always, always, always, always wanted his team to be tougher than they really were," said Scott Metcalfe, the Amerks Hall of Famer who played a key role with Nichol and Dan Frawley on that 1996 Calder Cup team.

Tortorella never backs down from a challenge. He doesn't think his team ever should, either.

Vancouver Canucks: head coach John Tortorella suspended 15 days

The NHL has thrown the book at Vancouver Canucks head coach John Tortorella. The interesting part is that Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley has been fined $25,000.00 by the NHL. I guess you could say that the head coaches in the NHL are on notice.

NEW YORK -– Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella has been suspended for 15 days, without pay, for his actions during the first intermission of NHL Game No. 735 in Vancouver on Saturday, Jan. 18, the National Hockey League announced Monday.

"Mr. Tortorella's actions in attempting to enter the Calgary Flames locker room after the first period were both dangerous and an embarrassment to the League," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "Coaches in the NHL bear the responsibility of providing leadership, even when emotions run high, and Mr. Tortorella failed in his responsibility to the game."

Mr. Tortorella's suspension is effective retroactive to January 19 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 2. He will miss six games. He is not permitted to have any interaction with his club prior to, during or after games.

NHL Hockey: Don Cherry goes off on P.K. Subban

I know this is a little bit old. Apparently, Don Cherry of the Coach's Corner didn't like P.K. Subban’s goal celebration after he scored the game-winning goal against the Ottawa Senators.

Toronto Star -- Cherry then offered stern advice to the 24-year-old before he heads to Sochi for the Winter Olympics.

“Don’t give (the opposition) ammunition,” Cherry said. “Subban had better stop that stuff when he (goes to the Olympics).”

Thoughts? I thought he celly was a bit over the top, but I wouldn't expect anything less from this guy. It was also against a conference opponent.

Well, Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella will have an in person hearing for attempting to confront the Calgary Flames head coach and for the scrum that erupted in the hall afterwards. You have to think that Torts will be getting a vacation and a hefty fine.

So, did SCSU get screwed or not?

UND beats BSU 4-2

Grand Forks, ND – The University of North Dakota entered Saturday’s game riding an eight-game unbeaten streak and looked to push it to nine-games with a win.

Mission accomplished. With the 4-2 win, UND has now won 8-of-9 games and hasn’t given up more than three goals, during that time. UND has been very stingy on defense, giving up an average of 1.77 goals per game.

Goaltending has been good as well. Sophomore goalie Zane Gothberg has started all nine games during UND’s unbeaten streak. Gothberg has been nothing short of amazing, posting an 8-0-1 record, with an impressive 1.76 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.

During the streak, UND has received balanced scoring from their forward lines. Tonight, players not normally known for their scoring chipped in goals for UND. On the score sheet, forwards Derek Rodwell (4), Connor Gaarder (3), Andrew Panzarella (1) and Michael Parks (6) all scored for UND.

One of tonight’s highlights was junior forward Andrew Panzarella, who scored the first goal of his UND career.

It feels definitely good,” Panzarella said. “It’s a long time coming. So, I don’t know, it couldn’t have been any easier. I was just driving to the net and Mark (MacMillan) put in on my tape, I don’t think I even moved my stick.”

The Beavers head coach Tom Serratore seemed a bit disappointed with the loss, but took it in stride.

“We just couldn’t get into a rhythm,” Serratore said. “They had a lot of offensive zone play. That was tough because we were down after one. They definitely won the time of possession battle. We just couldn’t get into a rhythm.”

“I think the biggest thing at this time of year is that you want to try to get better every game,” Serratore said. “We got a tie last night and came in here optimistic. You want to come in this building – which is a very, very difficult building to play in, but you want to respond. I thought there were some bright spots, but at the end of the day, we lost.”

UND head coach Dave Hakstol seemed pleased with the win tonight.

“We got a couple that found a hole early,” Hakstol said. “I think that was important. We put a lot of pucks to the net and this time we had something to show for it.”

One of the reoccurring storylines has been the play of forward Derek Rodwell and his linemates. That effort hasn’t gone unnoticed by the UND head coach.

“Derek played extremely well and there was chemistry there,” Hakstol said. “And that’s not just been this weekend. Those guys have been very good together over the last couple of months. Rods is playing very well right now.”

The forward line of Stephane Pattyn, Connor Gaarder and Derek Rodwell has been miserable to play against. It’s also been their calling card. Tonight, their hard work was rewarded with a couple of goals.

“I think it’s kind of starting from baseline things,” Rodwell said. “We’re kind of going out there and doing the same thing every day, going hard to the net, working (hard). They’re starting to go in for us now. We know going to the net the bounces are going to come and they kind of been coming for us lately.”

Now for the good news, UND hasn’t lost in eight-games. With the tie, UND is (11-7-3, 7-5-0 NCHC). On the other end of the ice, the tie leaves Bemidji State Beavers with a record of (7-11-7, 7-7-4 WCHA). The Beavers now have seven ties on the season

Next weekend, UND travels to Denver, Colorado to play the University of Denver in an important two-game conference series, game time is at 7:37 Mountain Time.

UND and BSU tie in Bemidji

emidji, MN – The University of North Dakota entered Friday’s game against the Bemidji State Beavers riding a seven-game winning streak. Unfortunately, that seven-game win streak would come to an end with a 1-1 tie against the Beavers.

I know it’s cliché, but you can cue the hot goalie reference. You have to give credit where credit is due. Junior goalie Adam Walsh was very good on Friday night. UND bombed the net with shots. UND did everything right, but score goals.

UND spent a lot of time in BSU’s end of the rink, but had nothing to show for it. The shots were very lopsided, as UND outshot BSU 38-14 through three-periods of play. UND threw everything but the kitchen sink at the Beavers, but Walsh did not bend. It just wasn’t meant to be, Bemidji State junior goalie Adam Walsh stood his ground stopping 37-of-38 shots during regulation. UND’s fortunes didn’t change in the overtime either, as Walsh was equally good, stopping five more shots.

If Beavers freshman goalie Jesse Wilkins hadn’t been hurt, Walsh wouldn’t have been the starter. Currently, Wilkins is suffering from a groin injury and was unable to go. The Beavers coaching staff inserted Adam Walsh in his place and the junior goalie didn’t disappoint.

Close but no cigar

The Beavers would come close to winning the game in the overtime period. With 30 seconds left in overtime, Beaver forward Radoslav Illo rang a puck off the pipe. UND goalie Zane Gothberg had no idea where the puck was. The puck was cleared by a UND defender and Brendan O’Donnell had a chance going the other way that was saved by Walsh.

After the game, Bemidji State head coach Tom Serratore sounded pleased with the tie against UND.

“We were on our heels,” Serratore said. “They played with great pace. Our puck management wasn’t very good in that first period and we allowed them to play a 200-foot game.”

“That’s not want you want them to do. You have to play a halfcourt game with them. You have to manage the puck, and possess the puck down low. The first period we neglected to do that.”

After the game, UND head coach Dave Hakstol didn’t seem all that satisfied with the tie.

“You can always do a little more,” Hakstol said. “We played well. We played hard for 60 minutes. We’ve got to, somewhere along the way, find a way to make one more play in a game like tonight.”

“We have to be a little better. We have to have a lot of the same, but a little bit better. We’re playing for a series (win). That’s what’s left on the table for us. We have to play a little bit better hockey game.”

To some the tie will seem like a loss, but I think we should look at it as a continuation of an eight-game unbeaten streak.
