SCSU vs. Miami University
This weekend the NCHC spot light turns to Saint Cloud State vs. Miami University match up. The RedHawks invade the Herb for the first ever NCHC home series in Saint Cloud.
Historically, Miami is 8-3-2 all-time against SCSU Huskies, however, the RedHawks are 0-2-1 in its last three games against the Huskies, including a 4-1 loss, last year, in the NCAA tournament. I think the best result for fans of other NCHC teams would be a series split.
Inside the NCHC - Episode 1 (11/6/13)
I have to say that I am impressed with the NCHC, so far to date. Their social media department is really impressive. I also heard the like-minded institution again, from Miami head coach Enrico Blasi. Thinking of which, historically, SCSU has been owned by Miami, so that should be a good series this coming weekend.

Drake Caggiula scores the NCHC's top goal of the week
After being carried of the ice on a stretcher the week before against the U-18 team. Drake Caggiula scores one of the dirtiest goals I have seen this season to date to become the top goal of the week. Caggiula's goal also ended up being named the play of the day on Fox Sports 1 on Friday night. That's a pretty big honor as well.
NHL Hockey: Sharks Hosed by Blown Call in San Jose Last Night...
s/t Duck Daddy. Check this out, the San Jose Sharks got hosed last night, it appears that the Sharks did in fact score the game-winning goal. I am surprised that this wasn't reviewed by the war room in Toronto. The Buffalo Sabres would go on to win the game in a shootout, that was only the third win of the season for the Buffalo Sabres.
I know NHL is going to get destroyed for no-goal in SJ, but neither broadcast had it quickly and BUF's didn't show it at all. If ref says...

Minnesota Wild: Parise Leads the Wild past the Flames with two goals
Former Fighting Sioux Forward Zach Parise is having a good season with the Minnesota Wild. Tonight he was on fire as he led the Minnesota Wild past the Calgary Flames when he scored (2g-1a—3pts). On the season, Parise has (8g-6a—14pts) in 16 games. His line mate Mikko Koivu also had (1g-2a—3pts) as well.

Where's all the antipathy coming from in regards to UND head coach Dave Hakstol
Game five and six on the season and the Fire Hakstol thread is already made it's first appearance of the season on Sioux Sports. I will be covering this topic more this week. This is a post that I originally Posted at the Hockey Writers Combine, a site that I used to write for that's no longer active. P.S Hak isn't going any where. UND isn't going to fire him.
Recently, ESPN posted an article that was written by Craig Custance on their Internet site (subscription required) about possible future coaching candidates for NHL and AHL jobs. UND head coach Dave Hakstol was listed as the top college coach candidates by Custance. I mean, it makes sense to me. I have always been a big advocate of coach Hakstol’s work and I think he’s a very good college hockey coach.
Naturally, UND Hockey beat writer Brad Schlossman posted a quote from the article on his media blog. Why not? The head coach of the team you cover just made a major publication and he’s getting major props. Kind of blows up the Hakstol hater’s story line as well.
Almost on cue, the haters came out to post their displeasure and thoughts about coach Hakstol. It’s funny how brave people become when they can hide behind the anonymity of a computer screen and a fake name. None of these people, would have the guts to say these things to Dave’s face.
Top college coach candidateDave Hakstol, North Dakota — He runs the powerhouse North Dakota college hockey program, one that continues to pump out NHL players such as Jonathan Toews, T.J. Oshie, Travis Zajac, Drew Stafford and Matt Greene.“This guy is really intelligent,” said one NHL source. “I think he’s got a pro mind.”Hakstol signed a six-year contract in 2012 that would keep him behind the bench in North Dakota through 2017-18 and said his focus is on sustaining his success there.“I have a high level of respect for the guys who are able to produce successful and sustainable results at the NHL level. At some point in my career if I was able to earn an opportunity to work with a good organization, it would be a consideration,” Hakstol wrote in an email on Monday when asked whether he has NHL interest. “All that being said, I don’t spend much time thinking about hypotheticals. I feel like our entire staff has been around the game long enough to have a real appreciation for what we have here and has a commitment to producing that long-term success and sustainability at UND.”
So if you look at Coach Hakstol’s impressive resume, he’s lacking “one thing” an NCAA title. My question is; does this impressive resume deserve this much scrutiny, angst and antipathy? I don’t know, I don’t believe it does.

I guess I don’t understand where the flames of discontent are coming from? The coaching staff at the University of North Dakota is second to none. All three coaches played hockey at UND. All three coaches have played professionally in the NHL, AHL or IHL, so they have the experience necessary to play at the next level. Dane Jackson (AHL) and Brad Berry (NHL) have coach in the professional ranks. Not a lot of Division I hockey programs can make that claim.
(Video) Ottawa’s Mark Borowiecki With A Backhand Into His Own Net
In a move which could be classified as being unfortunate. Ottawa defenesman Mark Borowiecki backhands the puck into his own net. Dallas Stars forward Antoine Roussel was the last one to touch the puck so he ends up being the beneficiary and gets credit for the goal. That’s goal number one on the year for Roussel. And it gets even better; the game was also Borowiecki’s NHL debut. Also, the Borowiecki miscue broke a 2-2 tie in the third period. The Senators would battle back before losing in a shootout 4-3. as well.

Former Maine goalie "Big" Ben Bishop is 6'7" tall, that's a very tall goalie. Daren Pang is 5'5" tall, and he's very short goaltender. I once met Panger when I was working the check point at the GFK airport after World Juniors in 2005, he's really not a very big man.
Are goalie fights a thing of the past?
Apparently, after Philadelphia Flyer's goalie Ray Emery fought Washington Capital’s goalie Braden Holtby last Friday night in Philadelphia, goalies fights could now be a thing of the past. You have got to be kidding me?!? This is what happens when we have an incident and then we have an over reaction. So, when Patrick Roy fought Chris Osgood, no one seemed to care.
League sources tell me #NHL will discuss 10-game suspension for goalies leaving their zone to fight much like player leaving bench rule #bn

Bowling Green Unhappy with Travel in WCHA?
| Central Collegiate Hockey Association logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
First off, I see no way the members of the current NCHC would ever let Bruce McLeod run a league that they're part of. So, if there was movement, it would be under the terms of the NCHC schools. Also, Western Michigan was offered an invitation to the WCHA, that they turned down. This was also the same school that was very interested in getting into the NCHC. So, to suggest that they would just up and leave the NCHC, I would question that was one, right away. That does sends up a big flag. Also, Miami has one of their own guys as Commissioners of the NCHC. It will be interesting to see what else comes out of this. Remember BGSU is the only Division I school in the WCHA. Also, they were the last school to join the new WCHA. I see little chance of WMU and Miami leaving the NCHC to be in a league with BGSU.
CHANGES?: Bowling Green could be headed back to the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Now, in his weekly chat, SCSU Husky beat writer Mick Hatton did suggest that BSU and MSU-M could be added to the NCHC. Actually, I had heard a rumor similar to this more than once, from two different people, but that rumor has since died off. Brad Schlossman also said that he thinks that the league will add two teams in the next 3-5 years as well.
Or at least the Falcons could be returning to some form of their old league.
Rumors are circulating throughout college hockey that the next round of realignment could be coming to the sport - even though the latest realignment just took effect this fall.
With the increased travel costs and leagues no longer geographically aligned, schools already are looking at even more realignment - and they're not waiting to see how the current setup works.
Depending on the rumor of the day, there's talk more league changing will take place in the next 3-5 years.
BG appears to be well on its way to contending for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association championship.
And the program is finally on a solid foundation financially, and has the backing of present school and athletics department administrators.
That puts the Falcon program in better position for next round of realignment.
The most popular rumor regarding BG and the other CCHA leftovers which joined the WCHA leftovers in a new WCHA has some or all of the CCHA schools getting back together.
They could be joined by former CCHA members Western Michigan and Miami of the National Collegiate Hockey Conference; or even Canisius, Mercyhurst, Niagara or Robert Morris of Atlantic Hockey.
BG, Miami and Western are members of the Mid-American Conference in all other sports. The four Atlantic Hockey Schools discussed CCHA membership in the past.
The other NCHC members are Denver, Colorado College, Miami, Minnesota-Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota and St. Cloud.
The other members of the WCHA are CCHA leftovers Ferris State, Alaska, Lake Superior and Northern Michigan; WCHA leftovers Alaska-Anchorage, Bemidji State, Michigan Tech and Minnesota State; and former NCAA Division I independent Alabama-Huntsville

Saint Cloud sweeps North Dakota
| English: Ralph Engelstadt Arena at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks, North Dakota. *Personally photographed by the undersigned May 8, 2007. Elcajonfarms 03:46, 3 July 2007 (UTC) (Photo credit: Wikipedia) |
“People like to label us as a young team, but that’s not an excuse now, we’ve been here two months,” North Dakota defenseman Troy Stecher on being swept at home by the Saint Cloud State Huskies.
Let’s say that it wasn’t a good weekend of hockey for the University of North Dakota, as they were swept at home for the first time in almost four years (January 29-30, 2010, against the University of Denver). There’s no way to sugar coat it, Saturday’s 3-1 loss was downright ugly. UND was outshot 29-17 by the Huskies, and they generated little offense. There where times during the game were UND was flatfooted, standing around, watching the Huskies make plays.
Defensively, the Huskies were air tight, and it was tough for the UND to generate much of anything in the way of offense. The Huskies pushed the pace and they were very good in all three zones on the ice.
“We didn’t generate enough,” head coach Dave Hakstol said. “We didn’t make enough plays coming out of our zone, through the neutral zone, to give us that speed to have some opportunities off of the rush.”
When the Huskies defensemen didn’t block another UND shot, get in the passing lanes, or stifle another UND offensive opportunity, their goaltender Ryan Faragher was there to thwart them once again. It has been the story of his career against UND.
UND has had no success against SCSU’s junior goalie Ryan Faragher who has been nothing short of amazing at the Ralph Engelstad Arena, record 4-1-1, .957 save percentage and a 1.50 goals against average.
“Tonight, we were getting them on target,” Hakstol said. “I think they blocked some and Faragher made some good saves. When we did get some opportunities… opportunities were pretty hard to come by both directions.”
Junior assistant captain Steph Pattyn didn’t pull any punches when he talked to the media after the game.
“They have a good team,” Pattyn said. “Very good team in that locker room…energy wise, maybe we were strong, but we weren’t doing the right things. We didn’t get very many pucks on net today. Didn’t get much traffic in front of him today, we have to get in front of his eye and we didn’t do that today.”
Not a lot of positives taken from the weekend
If you were a UND hockey fan, there wasn’t a lot of bright spots and positives to take away from this weekend. There is one bright spot, UND’s penalty kill, UND has killed off 28 of 29 opposition power plays. Also, UND has killed off 28 straight opposition power plays and that leads the nation. On the flip side UND’s power play has not been as good, but they did go 1/2 on the power play tonight and are now 5/27 (.187) for the season. UND has lost three games in a row and travel to Omaha, Nebraska next weekend to play the University of Nebraska Omaha Mavericks in an important two game series.

Goalies Ray Emery and Braden Holtby fight (Video)
While the game between SCSU and UND was on going on last night, my twitter feed blew up with this game and incident. Nothing beats a good ole fashion Donnybrook in my opinion. That being said, Emery might be getting a call from the department of player safety for this one.
This is one thing about the sport of hockey, when the score gets out of hand you had better tighten the chin strap and keep you head on a swivel. Some say that Flyers goalie Ray Emery had no business skating down the ice and challenging Washington Capitals goalie Braden Holtby to a fight. They’re probably right.

Interesting take on things, but the fact remains that these types of hits are no longer acceptable in the NHL.
Bill Hoppe, Olean Times Herald -- In other news, tough guy John Scott, who won’t appeal his seven-game suspension for hitting Boston’s Loui Eriksson’s in the head last week, said he’ll “err on the side of caution for now on.”
“I just got to be a little more responsible and really pay attention to how the other players, how his head lines up, if he’s vulnerable in any way,” said Scott, who noted he had a “good” and “frank” conversation with NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan during Thursday’s hearing.
Scott, while acknowledging he shouldn’t have hit Eriksson high, doesn’t believe the hit was late. He blamed NBC commentator Pierre McGuire for making viewers believe that.
“I think Pierre McGuire shooting his mouth off right after the hit got that on a lot of peoples’ minds,” Scott said. “‘It’s a late hit, it’s an elbow, it’s a high hit.’ He was just kind of throwing out all these different things, just hopefully one will stick. It wasn’t a late hit. It was just kind of an unfortunate circumstance.”

SCSU bites UND 3-2
Grand Forks, ND – What a difference a week makes, for the University of North Dakota.
Last Saturday night, during a game against the U-18 team UND sophomore forward Drake Caggiula tried to jump over a U-18 player, the sophomore forward fell and landed on his head. Caggiula was taken off of the ice on a stretcher and transported to Altru Hospital. At first, it didn’t look good and it appeared that the talented forward might be seriously injured and miss some time.
Fortunately, that ended up not being the case.
Fast forward to this weekend, Caggiula was in the lineup and laid out a Huskie forward with a huge check, on his first shift. He also scored a highlight-reel goal at 3:10 of the opening period.
UND would give up three goals in the third period to Kevin Gravel, Kalle Kossila and Andrew Prochno. UND never could get any closer than one goal back and ended up losing the game 3-2, in their first ever NCHC home conference game to the Saint Cloud State University Huskies.
UND would give up three goals in the third period to Kevin Gravel, Kalle Kossila and Andrew Prochno. UND never could get any closer than one goal back and ended up losing the game 3-2, in their first ever NCHC home conference game to the Saint Cloud State University Huskies.
Even though UND lost the game, Caggiula seemed relieved that he was able to get back out on ice after last week’s game.
“Nice to be back,” Caggiula said. “Missed the first day of practice this week, I really told trainers that I want to go aggressive with the rehab. To get me back out there in the best condition that I could be in, I felt pretty good being out there. It’s pretty exciting; I was pretty scared last week. It was just a good feeling to get out on the ice.”
One person that didn’t seem “real” happy with the results of the game was head coach Dave Hakstol. This is what the head coach had to say about the game.
“I thought it was a good hockey game, back-and-forth with a few momentum swings,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “I thought we were back on our heels for five minutes. Credit them for that little push, but we look for that push to come out of our locker room at the start of the third period.”
After five games this season there is one area of concern, the power play. UND is 4/24 on the power play (.167). On the flip side of the equation, UND has gone 1/27 on the penalty kill. Actually, UND has killed 26 opponent power plays in a row.
With the win SCSU is 4-0-1 and 1-0 in NCHC play, with the loss, UND dropped to 2-2-1 overall and 1-2 in the NCHC. The same two teams play again tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m. central.

Scott suspended seven games for hit on the Bruins Loui Erikson
In my opinion, this suspension, isn't long enough. I would like to see this be a 10-game suspension. Just for the record, Loui Eriksson hasn't played since October 23rd, because he's suffering from a concussion. Also, during his NHL Career, John Scott has scored a grand total of (1g-4a—5pts) in 187 NHL games. Not known for his offensive prowess, the Sabres' pylon has racked up 320 PIM.

North Dakota, Minnesota to renew historic rivalry
GRAND FORKS, N.D. – The most prolific rivalry in college
hockey returns during the 2016-17 season as the University of North Dakota and
the University of Minnesota have agreed to terms on a two-year deal that will
renew a rivalry dating back to 1930.
The Gophers will host North Dakota for a two-game series in 2016-17 at Mariucci Arena and then travel to Grand Forks for a road series in 2017-18. Dates for both series will be determined at a later time.
“This is a rivalry that our fans, alumni and team look forward to renewing,” said UND head coach Dave Hakstol. “It is one of the most heated in all of college sports.”
The two programs battled each year from 1948 to 2013 before conference realignment put the rivalry on a three-year hiatus. The most recent meeting between the two rivals was a 4-4 overtime tie on Jan. 19, 2013 at Mariucci Arena.
“We’re thrilled to officially get North Dakota back on our schedule and to renew one of the greatest rivalries in our sport,” Minnesota head coach Don Lucia said. “This rivalry is great for our programs, great for college hockey and great for our fans, and we’re excited to bring North Dakota back to Mariucci Arena.
Two of the most decorated programs in college hockey, North Dakota and Minnesota have combined for 12 national championships, 39 NCAA Frozen Four appearances, and six Hobey Baker Award winners. North Dakota is currently in its first season with the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) while the Gophers are in their first season of competition in the Big Ten Conference.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Donn)
Here we are the Halloween weekend, and we almost
have a full NCHC schedule, three out of four isn’t bad. Next thing you know Thanksgiving will be upon us.

Games
Nebraska-Omaha
@ Denver
Last weekend the Mavericks were swept by Cornell
(5-3, 4-3) in Omaha. The Pioneers beat
Niagara 5-1 and lost to Canisius 4-1 last weekend in Denver.
Last season in the WCHA the Pioneers took three
points from the Mavericks in there only series in Denver. I know past performance does predicted future
performance, but I like Denver at home.
PIONEERS 3-PTS
#9 St.
Could St. @ #5 North Dakota
Last weekend the Huskies swept Colgate (4-2,
4-3) in St. Cloud. NoDak “unofficially” beat
the US U-18 team (4-1) in Grand Forks.
Last season these teams split a series in St.
Cloud and SCSU took three points in the series in Grand Forks. NoDak has typically had “average” first
halves of the season and then done much better after Christmas. With that and the fact that we have a series
between top 10 teams, I’m going the easy way.
SPLIT
Colorado
College @ Western Michigan
Last weekend the Tigers were swept by Clarkson
(1-2L, 0-1) in Potsdam, NY. The Broncos
were not playing last weekend.
The Tigers head east this weekend to Kalamazoo (it’s
fun to say Kalamazoo, isn’t it!) and hit the ice at Lawson Arena, which NHL
sized. Being early in the season, it
makes it difficult to make an educated prediction. But hey, let’s make a prediction anyway. I’m picking the Tigers to win on Friday and
the Broncos to win on Saturday. SPLIT
Non-Conference
Games
Canisius
@ #6 Miami
Last weekend Canisius lost to Air Force 3-2 and
beat Denver 4-1 in Colorado. The RedHawks
lost and tied the Providence Friars (2-3ot, 4-4ot) in Rhode Island.
The Golden Griffins surprised us last weekend, I
would have picked them to beat AFA and lose to DU, not the other way around. But Canisius has a much stiffer test this
weekend when they travel to Oxford, Ohio.
It’s hard to pick against Miami in this series. RedHawks SWEEP.
#20 Minnesota-Duluth
@ Ohio State
Last weekend the Bulldogs split with Notre Dame
(3-2L, 4-1W) in Duluth. The Buckeyes swept
Robert Morris (5-3, 4-3) in a home-home series last weekend and beat Bowling
Green (5-3) on Tuesday night in Columbus.
This isn’t hockey related, but the OSU marching
band did an amazing performance the other weekend at the football stadium. Now on to hockey, the Buckeyes hockey program
is not the football program, but they are both now in the big ten
conference. OSU and there new conference
will need to pick up wins against quality teams, if they want the big ten to
succeed. I don’t think that will happen
this weekend. BULLDOGS SWEEP.

More good news: Drake Caggiula Practicing
From the press conference today the update on sophomore forward Drake Caggiula.
“He practiced on a limited basis yesterday, head coach Dave Hakstol said. “He’s making great strides. So, we haven’t made any decision for the weekend yet. Those final decisions, I think will be another 48 hours away.”

Drake Caggiula is practicing on a limited basis. Questionable for the weekend.

On tonight's UND Coaches Show, Coach Hakstol said Drake Caggiula practiced without limitation today and that "all signs are excellent."
