Dusting off the debris on Saturday Morning

There were some interesting events that happened in last games around the WCHA.
The University of North Dakota was outshot by the Fighting Irish by a margin of 36-17 but was still able to gut out a 2-1 win. Before the game, Tim Hennessy said in the pre-game that the game would likely be a 2-1 defensive battle and veteran radio announcer wasn’t wrong.
This game, like last Saturday night’s game against the UMD Bulldogs, had the feel of a playoff game where one mistake could cost the other team the game.
The fact that UND has been in two games like this and gotten the win, will pay dividends at the end of the season when it matters the most.
Since there was no television for last night’s game, I watched the game on the free webcast provided by UND.COM… I heard a few complaints about the quality of the video, but as far as “free” webcast go, I am not going to be too critical. My buddy Redwing77 texted me to complain about the video and I sent him back a text that simply said, “it’s free.”
I don’t try to look a gift horse in the mouth.
It was very apparent that Clarke Saunders was the star of the game for UND and the junior goalie played very well in net and made some very difficult saves for UND.
UND did get a major break from the on ice official when Keith Sergott blew the play dead when he lost sight of the puck that was sitting between Saunders legs. The replay shows that the puck was free between the pads of Saunders.
After the game, Clark Saunders was asked where the puck was when the ref blew the whistle.
"I had it - somewhere," said Saunders. "Not really sure where, but I had it."

Obviously, Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson was unhappy about the play after the game and said as much.

"The puck was free between (Saunders') legs,” Jackson said. “I could see it from the bench with one eye."

This is one of the few times, I have seen a questionable call go UND’s way this season and UND is now 1-2 in three controversial calls. UND has been on the receiving end of two bad calls and had two goals called back that should’ve been goals. This time, one finally went UND’s way. These things have a way of evening out, just like Saunders said. But it doesn’t feel good to be on the losing end of these calls. It is what it is…

UMN 5 – Vermont 1 – The Gophers pretty much handed the Catamounts their butts to them last night. I watched the second period and the third period of last night’s game and it wasn’t very close at all. In looking at the Gophers schedule so far to date, they haven’t played a team with a record above 500. The best team the Gophers have played is the Minnesota State University Mavericks who own a 4-5-2 record.

MSU-M 4 – Wisconsin 2 – I watched a good chunk of the Badgers and Maverick on DirecTV 669 and the Badgers didn’t look very good in last night’s game. I think we have to give credit where credit is due – Mankato is a pretty good hockey team – I like their young players like Jean-Paul LaFontaine and Matt Leitner.

That being said, if you take Mark Zengerle out of the Badgers lineup, you’re taking a big chunk out of the Badgers fire power. Nic Kerdiles hasn’t been able to play yet and is set to be eligible next weekend if he isn’t injured.

Getting Kerdiles and Zengerle in the Badges lineup would give them a major boost.
Frankly, I don’t know what to think of the Badgers. I know there are some unhappy Badger fans in Madison. I don’t think changing the head coach is going to matter; I think bad fortune has been their biggest Achilles heel.

Wisconsin has had some high end players come through their program and you can find them on a NHL rosters all-over the NHL; so something right is happening in Wisconsin. Maybe, Mike Eaves is doing too good of a job recruiting and developing players and needs a few of these players to stay just a few years so the Badgers can have some continuity on their hockey team so they can build some chemistry.

Yale 2 – Denver 1 O.T. – I listened to the game on the internet and Denver had to force overtime after a goal by Nick Shore at the 18:31mark of the third period.

This is what Denver University head coach George Gwozdecky had to say after the game. According to Mike Chambers, Gwoz was irate.
"I was very impressed with Yale. We knew they would come in and push the pace. They've got a terrific team and a great goaltender," Gwozdecky said. "Fortunately, we saw this coming. It was not a good week of practice. ... Some of the plays we couldn't make, whether it was the 5-on-3 power play or the other four power plays. It was awful. No other way to put it. If I had been sitting anywhere else, I would have been booing."
Ha!!! Seems a little harsh to boo your own team, but  it does sound like maybe the Pioneers had a bit of a hangover after sweeping the Colorado College Tigers in their home and home series against their hated cross state rivals, last weekend. You can bet that Gwoz will have his team prepared to play tonight and he will make adjustments.

UND Recruit Luke Voltin - 23 November 2012

Edit: Kristo's sick goal... Video highlights.

Here are the highlights of tonight's game. An amazing goal by Danny Kristo.

Looking at the video again, it looks like UND was finally on the receiving end of a call that should have gone the other way. When I first saw the video on line, it didn't have the angel this video did. It's obvious tonight that UND befitted from a call that should have gone the other way.

If I had to guess, it looks like the ref lost sight of the puck and blew the whistle, like they're supposed to; when actually the puck was not frozen. That being said, UND wins the game when their goalie was their best player. Game two tomorrow night.

s/t to pass it off of the goalie, who had this posted this on Sioux Sports tonight. This goal is a thing of beauty.

NHL cancels more games through December 14

You see where this is going? I suppose it won’t be long before the NHL leadership cancels the whole month of December and then we get to the ledge where the season is cancelled probably soon after if no agreement is reached.

NEW YORK - The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through December 14. The NHL also announced the cancellation of the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend scheduled for Jan. 26-27 in Columbus, Ohio. The cancellations are necessary due to the absence of a new Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players' Association and the NHL.

A total of 422 regular-season games -- 34.3 percent of the season -- were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Dec. 14.

"The reality of losing more regular-season games as well as the 2013 NHL All-Star Weekend in Columbus is extremely disappointing," said NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly. "We feel badly for NHL fans and particularly those in Columbus, and we intend to work closely with the Blue Jackets organization to return the NHL All-Star events to Columbus and their fans as quickly as possible."

You have to wonder how many other players are begging to feel the same way as Roman Hamrlik and Michal Neuvirth. I think this is kind of what the NHL owners wanted to do as well. You have to wonder if there is beginning to be some dissention in the player ranks.
Katie Carrera; Washington Post --- Washington Capitals forward Troy Brouwer was frustrated Thursday to read comments made by two of his teammates that questioned the direction of the NHLPA during the lockout.

In the previous 48 hours, veteran defenseman Roman Hamrlik said that he was “disgusted” and spoke out against NHLPA Executive Director Donald Fehr while goaltender Michal Neuvirth voiced support for the blueliner’s view, adding that he believed the lockout was about “several superstars with big contracts.”

Those comments didn’t sit well with Brouwer, who along with Jason Chimera serves as the Capitals’ representatives to the NHLPA and has spent much of the past few months learning the details of the union’s proposals and helping relay the information to others.
I was wondering about this the other day, not everyone in the NHL makes 5-10 million dollars a year in the NHL. There are a lot of players that are making less money and might be feeling the pinch of the lockout. I wonder is the will signal the beginning of the end of the solidarity with the NHLPA?
“I agree 100 percent with Hammer,” Neuvirth said. “This lockout is not about majority of players, I think. It is about several superstars with big contracts.”

Friday morning links… UND vs. ND

Good Morning!!! UND is in South Bend, Indiana to play the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in a crucial two game nonconference series that has some big time pairwise ranking implications.
·         International Man of mystery Matt Schill and Tim Hennessy preview the upcoming series between UND and Notre Dame.
·         Here is Matt and Tim’s Breakdown after the game last Saturday night.
·         Grand Forks Herald beat writer Brad Schlossman is already experiencing travel problems and is doing to be on a tight schedule making it to South Bend, Indiana.
·         Roman Augustoviz and Jerry the Superfan make their predictions for this weekend in the WCHA and Roman predicts that UND will be swept by the Fighting Irish and Jerry the Superfan predicts that UND will sweep the Irish.  Just for the record, last time Roman predicted that UND would be swept they split with the SCSU Huskies.
·          Here is my blog post for the Hockey Writers Combine. The Only Game in Town.
·         Here is my series notes for the Week Ahead.
·         Michael Russo has been covering the Gophers during the NHL lockout and during the Minnesota Media day on Wednesday, UMN head coach Donnie Lucia said that UND will be back on the UMN schedule when the Notre Dame Fighting Irish fall off the Gophers schedule.
·         This weekend both games will be on the Notre Dame webcasts and the good news is that they’re free. You can view the games by going to this link. I will be interesting to see if the ND webcasts will be able to handle all of the web traffic that UND fans are going to bring.
·         A Tradition of Excellence has this weekend’s links.
·         Brad Schlossman has a great article that asks the question do the college hockey refs talk to the coaches too much? Last weekend, both games were in the 2:45 minute range and that is a pretty long college hockey game.  These were two of the longest games that UND has played in for eight years.
·         UND SID has a travel blog up for this weekend’s trip to South Bend and we can bet that Jason will have a great update on the team’s trip. They were able to dodge the full TSA grope and long airport lines by flying on a charter.

Leafs Fan buys toilet for $5,300.00

This morning, I was listening to NHL Home Ice on XM-92 and this story was one of their lead stories. You would have to be one heck of a NHL Hockey fan to buy an old toilet for 5,300.00. Seriously, I can’t imagine spending that much money for a toilet no matter who sat on it.
TORONTO - An Ontario lawyer is now the proud owner of a toilet from the Toronto Maple Leafs' former dressing room.

Jim Vigmond, of Barrie, Ont., bought the unusual item for $5,300 at auction after the piece he really wanted—the 1967 Stanley Cup banner—got too expensive. The toilet was offered up along with more than 100 items from Maple Leaf Gardens, which was home to the NHL team until 1999.

Fifty-five-year-old Vigmond says his friends were skeptical about the purchase.

But the long-time Leafs fan says the item was just too good to pass up.

Vigmond says he was actually willing to spend up to $10,000 on the throne.

"They thought I had money to burn, and surely there was something that I could have better spent my money on," he said.

"They've got a point. But ... it's a part of an icon. I just thought ... what a rare piece and just think of all of the people that have spent time contemplating in that dressing room what lies ahead of them."

Vigmond plans on putting the toilet in his sports memorabilia room, where he wants to sit on it, light up a Cuban cigar, open a bottle of 30-year-old single malt, and hopefully, watch a Leafs game sometime soon.

Matt Frattin goal against Binghamton Senators

Former UND hockey player Matt Frattin scores for the Toronto Marlies in the closing minute of today’s game against the Binghamton Senators. That’s four goals in three games for the former UND forward. Frattin missed the first 13 games of the season with a knee injury. The Marlies lost the game 3-2 to the Senators.

Happy Thanksgiving from Goon's World...

I have many gifts that I am thankful for.

The only game in town?

The NHL lockout has been a buzzkill so far this fall and it appears that there is no end in sight to the second NHL lock out in eight seasons.
The two sides are literally squabbling over millions of dollars, but have no idea how to come to an agreement on how they’re going to split up their hockey related revenues. While these two sides bicker, college hockey seems to be taking the center stage.
Hockey fans need options and are looking to college hockey to fill their NHL Hockey void.
I have compiled a National Collete Hockey Television Schedule that you can use a guide. I update it, when more games are added to the schedule. In the US, college Hockey might be the only viable option we have this winter, if they two sides don’t come to an agreement soon.
The NHL will cancel the first two weeks of December very soon, if not in days,  if an agreement between the two sides isn’t reached. This is a true fact, that cancellation will probably come after the Thanksgiving holiday.
So how big has college hockey been in absence of NHL Hockey, one team in Grand Forks, North Dakota is the most watched hockey team in North America.
UND hockey is king with the NHL hockey locked out.
If you don’t believe me, check out the article that Brad Schlossman wrote in today’s Grand Forks Herald, which says that UND Hockey is the most followed hockey team in North America.
I don’t think it’s a shock to any of us who have followed UND hockey, which has had a very big following since the team moved the Ralph Englestad Arena for the start of the 2001-02 season.
This season, UND hockey drew it’s 5 millionth fan. That’s pretty good for college hockey, which UND is historically in the top three nationally for attendance every season.
Those fans that come through the turnstiles of the Ralph Englestad Arena  to watch UND hockey are enthusiastic and fired up about watching their favorite team and this hasn’t gone unnoticed by UND head coach Dave Hakstol.
“I don’t know about the attendance marks, but I know about the energy our fans bring,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “It’s the best student section in the country. When we leave for pregame meal, there’s 1,000 students already lined up at 2:30 or 3 in the afternoon. When we come back for the game, that student lineup out in the cold wraps halfway around the back of the arena. That, in itself, brings some excitement when you get to the rink.
“Inside the arena, the passion all our fans bring is second to none. I can compare that to almost any sporting event I’ve been at. What continually strikes me is the new people that come into the building — NHL people and hockey people from all over different parts of North America. No matter what they’ve heard about the building, no matter how many positives they’ve heard, by the end of the hockey game they are still in disbelief about what they just witnessed. That’s due to the passion and excitement of our fans. Their loyalty is second to none.”
So while the NHL is locked out, you do have options. Here is the television is the National College HockeyTelevision Schedule for the next two weeks. If you have DiecTV and don’t have the sports pack, get it. Check your local cable television listings for the games and channels listed below.
