Former Sioux forward Jonathan Toews on the CBA negotiations

Today former Fighting Sioux forward was one of 18 players that was at the CBA negotiations between the NHLPA and the NHL led by commissioner Gary Bettman and this is what he had to say on the matter. Based on what I have read today, it doesn't look good.

You can read the blog by Adam Jahns here.

Here is another great comment from Jonathan Toews that was in another article at CSN.COM.
Toews, who went to Toronto for today’s negotiations, told the media “we want the league to honor current contracts. That’s pretty much all we’re asking.” [CSN.COM]
Here is the list of the 18 NHL players that were in attendance today.

Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Jarome Iginla, Eric Staal, Shane Doan, Shawn Horcoff, Craig Adams, Brad Boyes, Chris Campoli, David Clarkson, Dan Cleary, Carlo Colaiacovo, Mathieu Darche, Robyn Regehr, Matt Stajan, Shawn Thornton, Kevin Westgarth and Daniel Winnik.

Not so fast - NHLPA and NHL Owners no closer to a deal

English: NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman in 2007.
English: NHL Commisioner Gary Bettman in 2007. (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
On Tuesday the NHL owners put forth another proposal for a new CBA – shortly thereafter there was a lot of excitement that finally we might get an NHL season.

Donald Fehr came out on Tuesday and said, "Simply put, the owners' new proposal, while not quite as Draconian as their previous proposals, still represents enormous reductions in player salaries and individual contracting rights."

Today, the NHLPA put forth three (3) counter proposals to the NHL owners and Gary Bettman and the NHL owners balked at all three of them.
TORONTO NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman received three counterproposals from the players’ association on Thursday and left the negotiating table “thoroughly disappointed.”

No new talks have been scheduled, and the possibility of a full hockey regular season is quickly shrinking.

The union offered multiple options in response to the NHL’s offer on Tuesday that called for an 82-game season and a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenues between owners and players.

Bettman said that proposal was the “best that we could do” and added that the two sides are still far apart.

“None of the three variations of player share that they gave us even began to approach 50-50, either at all or for some long period of time,” Bettman said. “It’s clear we’re not speaking the same language.”

After today's revelations, I think we're right back where we were before the lastest round of proposals and counter proposals. This tweet by the Breaking News Twitter feed give me pause to think that we're not going to have an NHL season this year.

Weekend Match-Ups (by Sioux 7)

We have our first official WCHA games this weekend with MTU hosting UM in Houghton.  We also really get cracking with the “official” start of the season, with a slew of non-conference and tournaments.  Maybe college hockey will gain a few more fans this season with the NHL still not playing games, with their lock-out.

On a completely different tangent, I would like to take this paragraph and say thanks to the Goon.  Last week he and I went out to the “hunting shack” (the “t” is silent in hunting by the way) bird hunting.  We shot some nice ducks and some humungous canadain geese.  It was relaxing time away from work and the big city (I think Fargo is getting big enough, ugh).  Thanks Goon!  (Thanks to Dakota Dog too, for retrieving all those birds.)

WCHA Games

#1 Minnesota @ Michigan Tech
Last weekend the Gophers stomped Michigan State by scores of 5-1 and 7-1 in Minneapolis and last Thursday, the 11th, the Huskies lost their opener to Upper Peninsula rival Northern Michigan, 4-2, in Marquette.

Now that both teams have gotten legitimate games under their belts, the first game jitters should be out of the way.  These games also are the first of the last WCHA season (well the WCHA as it currently is).   Last December these teams played one series in Minneapolis with the Huskies winning the opener 3-2 in OT and the Gophers winning the closer 6-2.  This time it’s Tech has the home ice, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Huskies give Minnesota all the can handle, with second year coach Pearson’s leading the pack.  Gophers 3-pts.

Non Conference Games

#13 Minnesota-Duluth @ #9 Notre Dame (Thurs/Fri)
Last weekend the Bulldogs split with Ohio State in Duluth with UMD winning the opener 6-2 and the Buckeyes getting even on Saturday winning 3-2.  Notre Dame beat Maine 1-0 and then beat Nebraska-Omaha 3-2 in the IceBreaker in Kansas City.

Since this season is still in its infancy, I’m not sure what to expect with the rankings teams have, but it the pollsters are close, this should be a heckuva match-up.  I’m going to call it a split.

#19 Colorado College @ Air Force (Fri)
Last weekend the Tigers swept Clarkson in Colorado Springs by identical 5-4 scores and Air Force tied Alaska and Alaska-Anchorage by identical scores of 3-3 in the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage.

This game is literally across town affair.  Even though it is non-conference, it’s always nice to win and have bragging rights around town.  Tigers Win.

#10 Massachusetts-Lowell @ #7 Denver (Fri)
Last weekend the River Hawks tied Vermont 1-1 in Lowell and the Pioneers were off last weekend.

With the Pioneers only having one “unofficial” game under their belt, I’m not sure how this one will play out.  But you know me; I got to go with the WCHA while I can, Pioneers Win.

#10 Massachusetts-Lowell @ #19 Colorado College (Sat)
After playing the Pioneers on Friday, the River Hawks travel down the road an hour or so to play the Tigers.  I’m going with the higher ranked team in this match-up, River Hawks Win.

Air Force @ #7 Denver (Sat)
I’m going with the Pioneers in this match-up; DU has just too much depth for the Falcons to match them.  DU Wins

Rensselaer @ Minnesota State
Last weekend the Engineers beat and tied Ferris State, 3-1 and 2-2, and the Mavericks beat and tied the UAH Chargers, with scores of 4-1 and 2-2 in Huntsville.

I don’t much about the Engineers, other than I like their name J, so just going with that I’m going to say a SPLIT is on tap for this series.

Alabama-Huntsville @ St. Could St.
Last weekend the Chargers lost and tied the Minnesota State Mavericks and the Huskies were swept by the New Hampshire Wildcats in Durham.

Last season the Chargers managed to get 2 wins all season and 1 tie, losing all the rest.  I’m not sure things are going to fair any better this year for the boys down south.  Huskies Sweep

#17 Northern Michigan @ Nebraska-Omaha
Last weekend the Wildcats swept the Wisconsin Badgers in Marquette by scores of 2-1 and 4-2 and the UNO Mavericks beat Army 5-1 and lost to Notre Dame 3-2 in the IceBreaker in Kansas City.

Those of you that are old enough remember the days when NMU was in the WCHA, and UNO didn’t have a D1 program.  The Mavericks will no doubt want to bounce back after losing the championship game last weekend.  This means trying to take out their frustration this weekend on the visiting Wildcats.  I think they will get a win, but not two, SPLIT.

Alaska Gold Rush Tournament (Fairbanks, Alaska)

#2 North Dakota vs Alaska-Anchorage (Fri)
Last weekend NoDak beat the US U-18 team 6-4 in Grand Forks and the Seawolves beat Canisius 2-0 and tied Air Force 3-3 in the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage.

This will be the first of three games between these teams in a two weekend span, this one is non-conference game, and next weekend they play a pair of WCHA games in Grand Forks.  It is early and the flight up North is a long one, but in the end, NoDak has just too talent for the Seawolves.  NoDak Wins

Merrimack vs Alaska (Fri)
I’ll take the home team, Nanooks win.

#2 North Dakota vs Alaska (Sat)
Last weekend the Nanooks tied Air Force 3-3 and lost to Canisius 3-1 in the Kendall Hockey Classic in Anchorage.

The Nanooks (I like their jersey’s) will have the home crowd advantage.  It will give them some inspiration, but that doesn’t win games, goals do.  NoDak Wins

Merrimack vs Alaska-Anchorage (Sat)
Last weekend the Warriors lost to fellow Hockey East foe Northeastern 4-2.

The Seawolves will not be heading south (not but once, maybe twice, a year I can say that) empty this weekend, Seawolves Win

Alaska Nanooks 2010 Hockey Intro Video

Brad Schlossman posted this video on the Wednesday Herald writers sports chat today. Since UND is going up to Fairbanks to play in the Brice Goal Rush Tourney, I thought I would post it on the blog because it's a very well done video, the University of Alaska Fairbanks used to play this video before their games during the 2010-11 season.

Nine Men out, UND heads north to Alaska

Originally posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine...

I mentioned last Friday night after the exhibition game against US National Development Under 18 team that UND was going to face some self-created adversity, during their first weekend series of the 2012-13 season.

In their game against the UAA Seawolves, UND will play with bare bones lineup of 16 skaters – that’s two less than the number allowed by the rules when they take the ice in their first game.

Last season, UND played most of the last month of the 2011-12 campaign with 17 players or less due to injuries, so this really isn't anything new for the team from North Dakota.

Also, this will not be used as an excuse by the North Dakota coaching staff.

UND will be without senior forward Danny Kristo (19g-26a—45pts), who is suspended for the first two games of the season, due to an infraction of team rules.

Kristo will not make the trip with the team to Fairbanks, Alaska and he will not be back until the first home series of the season the following weekend against the University of Alaska Anchorage Seawolves, on October 26 and 27 at Ralph Englestad Arena.

Also missing from the lineup, for “at least” the next two weeks is sophomore forward Michael Parks (12g-10a—22pts), who suffered an undisclosed lower body injury in the exhibition game against the University of Manitoba Bison.

Head coach Dave Hakstol was asked about the status of sophomore forward Michael Parks.

“Probably, I am guessing a few weeks for Michael Parks,” Hakstol said. “That is about as close I can come to narrowing it down. It certainly won’t be with the next one to two weeks, but I hope with the next few weeks we will be able to get him on the ice. It will all depend on how his rehab progresses and how he reacts.”

UND will also miss sophomore forward Brendan O’Donnell (5g-1a—6pts) , senior defenseman Andrew MacWilliam (2g-5a—7pts), senior forward Carter Rowney (18g-15—33pts) and senior forward Corbin Knight (16g-24a—40pts) who will all serve a one game suspension during first game against the University of Alaska Anchorage at the Brice Alaska Goal Rush tourney for a violation of team rules.

With Knight, Kirsto, Rowney and Parks absent for the first game of the season because of suspensions and the injury  – based on last season numbers – UND will be missing some high end talent that scored 140 points last season – that doesn’t take a mathematical guru to figure out that’s a lot of offensive fire power missing from the UND line.

On the following night of the Brice Alaska Goal Rush tourney, sophomore forwards Connor Gaarder (4g-6a—10pts), Stephane Pattyn (4g-3a—7pts) and sophomore defenseman Andrew Panzarella (0g-4a—4pts) will all sit out due to an infraction of team rules...

This is the list of UND hockey players that will miss the game for UND against Anchorage Alaska.

1.       Danny Kristo – Suspension
2.       Corbin Knight – Suspension
3.       Andrew MacWilliam – Suspension
4.       Carter Rowney – Suspension

NHL proposal to save 82-game season

1. Term:
• Six-year Agreement with mutual option for a seventh year.
2. HRR Accounting:
• Current HRR Accounting subject to mutual clarification of existing interpretations and settlements.
3. Applicable Players' Share:
• For each of the six (6) years of the CBA (and any additional one-year option) the Players' Share shall be Fifty (50) percent of Actual HRR.
4. Payroll Range:
• Payroll Range will be computed using existing methodology. For the 2012/13 season, the Payroll Range will be computed assuming HRR will remain flat year-over-year (2011/12 to 2012/13) at $3.303 Billion (assuming Preliminary Benefits of $95 Million).
• 2012/13 Payroll Range
Lower Limit = $43.9 Million
Midpoint = $51.9 Million
Upper Limit = $59.9 Million
• Appropriate "Transition Rules" to allow Clubs to exceed Upper Limit for the 2012/13 season only (but in no event will Club's Averaged Club Salary be permitted to exceed the pre-CBA Upper Limit of $70.2 Million).
5. Cap Accounting:
• Payroll Lower Limit must be satisfied without performance bonuses.
• All years of existing SPCs with terms in excess of five (5) years will be accounted for and charged against a team's Cap (at full AAV) regardless of whether or where the Player is playing. In the event any such contract is traded during its term, the related Cap charge will travel with the Player, but only for the year(s) in which the Player remains active and is being paid under his NHL SPC. If, at some subsequent point in time the Player retires or ceases to play and/or receive pay under his NHL SPC, the Cap charge will automatically revert (at full AAV) to the Club that initially entered into the contract for the balance of its term.
• Money paid to Players on NHL SPCs (one-ways and two-ways) in another professional league will not be counted against the Players' Share, but all dollars paid in excess of $105,000 will be counted against the NHL Club's Averaged Club Salary for the period during which such Player is being paid under his SPC while playing in another professional league.
• In the context of Player Trades, participating Clubs will be permitted to allocate Cap charges and related salary payment obligations between them, subject to specified parameters. Specifically, Clubs may agree to retain, for each of the remaining years of the Player's SPC, no more than the lesser of: (i) $3 million of a particular SPC's Cap charge or (ii) 50 percent of the SPC's AAV ("Retained Salary Transaction"). In any Retained Salary Transaction, salary obligations as between Clubs would be allocated on the same percentage basis as Cap charges are being allocated. So, for instance, if an assigning Club agrees to retain 30% of an SPC's Cap charge over the balance of its term, it will also retain an obligation to reimburse the acquiring Club 30% of the Player's contractual compensation in each of the remaining years of the contract. A Club may not have more than two (2) contracts as to which Cap charges have been allocated between Clubs in a Player Trade, and no more than $5 million in allocated Cap charges in the aggregate in any one season.
6. System Changes:
• Entry Level System commitment will be limited to two (2) years (covering two full seasons) for all Players who sign their first SPC between the ages of 18 and 24 (i.e., where the first year of the SPC only covers a partial season, SPC must be for three (3) years).
• Maintenance of existing Salary Arbitration System subject to: (i) total mutuality of rights with regard to election as between Player and Club, and (ii) eligibility for election moved to five years of professional experience (from the current four years).
• Group 3 UFA eligibility for Players who are 28 or who have eight (8) Accrued Seasons (continues to allow for early UFA eligibility -- age 26).
• Maximum contract length of five (5) years.
• Limit on year-to-year salary variability on multi-year SPCs -- i.e., maximum increase or decrease in total compensation (salary and bonuses) year-over-year limited to 5% of the value of the first year of the contract. (For example, if a Player earns $10 million in total compensation in Year 1 of his SPC, his compensation (salary and bonuses) cannot increase or decrease by more than $500,000 in any subsequent year of his SPC.)
• Re-Entry waivers will be eliminated, consistent with the Cap Accounting proposal relating to the treatment of Players on NHL SPCs playing in another professional league.
• NHL Clubs who draft European Players obtain four (4) years of exclusive negotiating rights following selection in the Draft. If the four-year period expires, Player will be eligible to enter the League as a Free Agent and will not be subject to re-entering the Draft.
7. Revenue Sharing:
• NHL commits to Revenue Sharing Pool of $200 million for 2012/13 season (based on assumption of $3.303 Billion in actual HRR). Amount will be adjusted upward or downward in proportion to Actual HRR results for 2012/13. Revenue Sharing Pools in future years will be calculated proportionately.
• At least one-half of the total Revenue Sharing Pool (50%) will be raised from the Top 10 Revenue Grossing Clubs in a manner to be determined by the NHL.
• The distribution of the Revenue Sharing Pool will be determined on an annual basis by a Revenue Sharing Committee on which the NHLPA will have representation and input.
• For each of the first two years of the CBA, no Club will receive less in total Revenue Sharing than it received in 2011/12.
• Current "Disqualification" criteria in CBA (for Clubs in Top Half of League revenues and Clubs in large media markets) will be removed.
• Existing performance and "reduction" standards and provisions relating to "non-performers" (i.e., CBA 49.3(d)(i) and 49.3(d)(ii)) will be eliminated and will be adjusted as per the NHL's 7/31 Proposal.
8. Supplemental and Commissioner Discipline:
• Introduction of additional procedural safeguards, including ultimate appeal right to a "neutral" third-party arbitrator with a "clearly erroneous" standard of review.
9. No "Rollback":
• The NHL is not proposing that current SPCs be reduced, re-written or rolled back. Instead, the NHL's proposal retains all current Players' SPCs at their current face value for the duration of their terms, subject to the operation of the escrow mechanism in the same manner as it worked under the expired CBA.
10. Players' Share "Make Whole" Provision:
• The League proposes to make Players "whole" for the absolute reduction in Players' Share dollars (when compared to 2011/12) that is attributable to the economic terms of the new CBA (the "Share Reduction"). Using an assumed year-over-year growth rate of 5% for League-wide revenues, the new CBA could result in shortfalls from the current level of Players' Share dollars ($1.883 Billion in 2011/12) of up to $149 million in Year 1 and up to $62 million in Year 2, for which Players will be "made whole." (By Year 3 of the new CBA, Players' Share dollars should exceed the current level ($1.883 Billion for 2011/12) and no "make whole" will be required.) Any such "shortfalls" in Years 1 and 2 of the new CBA will be computed as a percentage reduction off of the Player's stated contractual compensation, and will be repaid to the Player as a Deferred Compensation benefit spread over the remaining future years of the Player's SPC (or if he has no remaining years, in the year following the expiration of his SPC). Player reimbursement for the Share Reduction will be accrued and paid for by the League, and will be chargeable against Players' Share amounts in future years as Preliminary Benefits. The objective would be to honor all existing SPCs by restoring their "value" on the basis of the now existing level of Players' Share dollars.

Tweets that give me hope that the season could be saved

I think after today developments there is some hope that a settlement could be reached or at least it's possible that both sides could agree to a new CBA. What is even more exciting is there is a chance that we could have a full 82 game NHL season. Or at least from my vantage point -- it would appear that the two sides are "finally" making some progress after the NHL owners put forward what appears to be a serious proposal now.

Spector on NHL: Bettman, you're fired

This blog post is for my good buddy Redwing77 – being a self-professed Gary Bettman hater I am sure that he will like this article by Mark Spector from Sportsnet.CA. I do agree that it’s time for NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman to go and tomorrow wouldn’t be soon enough.
When it comes to the National Hockey League and its incessant lockouts, there are still a couple of questions we've never found the answers to:

Like, how is it that the average NHL salary of $2.4 million sits between Major League Baseball's ($3.4 million) and the National Football League ($1.9 million), when hockey's revenues are nowhere close to those other leagues?

And we're still seeking an answer to why one side of this hockey debate gets 57 per cent of the revenues and doesn't pay any of the bills, while the other side gets the 43 per cent, all of the expenses, and carries the financial risk.

But, there is one thing we are absolutely certain of today, as hockey winds through its third lockout in the past 18 years:

It is time for Gary Bettman to go.

Get this thing squared up, Gary, then call it a day. See Human Resources, sign the papers, and move on with your life.
The only thing that would make it better would be to have Donald Trump to send Bettman his walking papers in the form of a video telling him that he’s fired.
You are not effective anymore, Gary, and the time has come to go in a different direction.

Pack up your things. We'll be in contact.

You're fired.
Like I have said in the past, any counter proposal that the NHLPA puts forward to the NHL Owners should include a proposal to have Bettman removed from his position as Commissioner of the NHL. Nothing good can come from Bettman remaining in the Commissioner's position. I also think that by Bettman being removed as Commissioner of the NHL would go a long way in healing the hurt feeling between both sides. It would also be interesting to know how many of the owners feel this way about Bettman who has become a very polerizing figure in the NHL.

UND games to be shown on-line this weekend.
