EDIT: Four UND Hockey Players charged with Possession of Alcohol

According to the Grand Forks Herald article dated September 21, 2012 four UND Hockey players were going to be charged with Misdemeanor Possession/Consumption Of Alcohol By Person Under 21. In looking at the Grand Forks County Court website this morning I can only find three players that fit that description.

According to the Grand Forks Herald, Bryn Chyzyk is the fourth player in question, but a search of the court records doesn't show that Chyzyk has yet to have been charged as of this time.

UND Athletics issues additional 1-game suspensions for men’s hockey party

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison announced today additional suspensions for a violation of team rules stemming from a Sept. 15 men’s hockey team party. Today’s suspensions were determined based on additional information gathered during the athletic department’s investigative process.

Sophomores Connor Gaarder, Andrew Panzarella and Stephane Pattyn have been suspended for UND’s Oct. 20 regular season game at Alaska Fairbanks. On Monday, Faison had announced 1-game suspensions for senior captains Andrew MacWilliam, Corban Knight, Danny Kristo and Carter Rowney to be served during UND’s Oct. 19 regular season opener against Alaska Anchorage in Fairbanks.

Faison also announced today that Kristo and sophomore forward Brendan O’Donnell have each received a 1-game suspension for a violation of UND Athletics Department policy. O’Donnell will serve his suspension on Oct. 19 versus Alaska Anchorage, while Kristo will serve his additional suspension Oct. 20 at Alaska Fairbanks.

When Faison issued the four initial suspensions on Monday, he also announced several additional team disciplinary measures including, but not limited to:

o Athletics Department-issued team probation under which any further violations by a team member could result in immediate reduction of scholarship, suspension from competition, or expulsion from the program.

o The implementation of a mandatory team community service program

o Weekly team alcohol education programming

Faison reiterated that “measures taken by the athletics department do not preclude possible additional measures by the department, or actions by the University or local and state authorities.”

Neither Faison nor head coach Dave Hakstol will provide further comment.

The UND Hockey Prospectus was released today - some fans have wondered where the members of the UND Hockey team are from - they're from all over the place. 

 

2012-13 UND Hockey Roster is up

The 2012-13 UND Hockey roster is up - as you can see Taylor Dickin is no longer on the team he is now a member of the University of Manitoba.

A couple of UND hockey related things...

First things first, according to Brad E Schlossman of the Grand Forks Herald, has announced on his hockey blog that UND goalie Aaron Dell has signed with Colorado Eagles of the ECHL. Goon's World would like to wish Dell well in the next step of his hockey career.

UND Athletics, Clear Channel Grand Forks continue partnership

Mutual option exercised for 2012-13 sports season

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota Director of Athletics Brian Faison announced today that Clear Channel Grand Forks will continue to serve as the flagship station for the UND Sports Radio Network. UND Athletics and Clear Channel have exercised the mutual option year in the original agreement previously announced in 2009.

“Clear Channel Grand Forks has been a tremendous radio partner for UND Athletics and we are excited that we will be able to continue that partnership,” said Faison. “They have been key to our ability to grow the UND Sports Radio Network.”

“Clear Channel Grand Forks is thrilled to continue to have UND sports on the air,” said Clear Channel Grand Forks Market Manager Pat McLean. “It’s been a great partnership, all the way from Division II to the Division I transition, and now we’re excited to be a part of the leap into full Division I competition. We look forward to another great year for UND.”

Clear Channel Grand Forks stations will carry all UND football, men's hockey and men's and women's basketball games – home and away – all home women’s hockey games, select road games and a weekly coaches show.

All football and men's hockey games will be heard on 96.1-FM The Fox, while men's and women's basketball games will air on 100.3-FM Cat Country. Women’s hockey will air on 1440 KXXL-AM The Fan.

The weekly UND Coaches Show, which will air from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. every Wednesday night, will be heard on 1440-AM The Fan. The show will be broadcast live from the Ground Round restaurant in Grand Forks.

There will also be a daily two-minute "UND Sports Update," which will air twice a day beginning Monday, Aug. 13 on The Fan.

Jordan Schmaltz committed to UND

Brad Schlossman from the Grand Forks Herald has a great pre-draft piece on incoming freshman Jordan Schmaltz – again Schmaltz has re-iterated that he is committed to being a member of the Fighting Sioux hockey team and not going to the CHL.

Brad Elliott Schlossman, Grand Forks Herald ---[Jordan] Schmaltz interviewed with 24 of 30 NHL teams at the NHL Combine last month. He said almost all of the teams asked if he would be attending UND or if he would bolt to the Ontario Hockey League after the draft, like UND recruit J.T. Miller did a year ago.

“I just told them honestly that I am 100 percent to UND,” Schmaltz said. “They were fine with that. They’re happy I’m sticking with my commitment.”

Schmaltz said he’s looking forward to working with new UND assistant coach Brad Berry and arriving on the campus where his father and two uncles played college football.
“It’s an unbelievable atmosphere,” he said.

This past week I have gotten a few questions about Schmaltz’s status – from everything that I have read and heard is that he is going to be here – you read where he told Brad Schlossman that he is committed to coming to UND. Personally, I am not worried.

Poll on Ballot Measure four, 59 percent will vote yes.

Someone posted this link over on Sioux Sports. This week there are four state wide ballot measures during the primary for North Dakota voters to vote on. One of the more emotionally heated issues is Ballot Measure four on whether the University of North Dakota's sports teams will remain the Fighting Sioux or not. A "Yes" vote means you that you want University of North Dakota to retire the Fighting Sioux nickname. A "No" vote means that you want University of North Dakota to retain the Fighting Sioux nickname.

Posted above is a screen shot of the Ballot Measure 4 polling numbers. A state wide poll was conducted by a national polling firm, Mason-Dixon during last week. It would appear that the Yes vote on ballot measure four has almost 60 percent of the vote, but we will wait and see how Tuesday's vote turns out.  A lot of things can happen and it would be interesting to see how they conducted their poll on. Polls conducted on likely voters are more accurate than a simple poll of potential voters.

Based on the numbers it would appear that women voters are more in favor of a the University of North Dakota dropping the Fighting Sioux nickname than men; Republicans seem to be more in favor of UND retaining the Fighting Sioux nickname than Democrats and Independants.

Herald - UND coaches will tour state to talk nickname

UND athletic Director Brian Faison and Five UND Fighting Sioux coaches Dave Hakstol, Brian Idalski, Chris Mussman, Travis Brewster and Kevin Gilbraith will be traveling to Fargo, Bismarck and Fargo to inform alumni and fans about ballot measure four and the Fighting Sioux nickname.

Tom Miller, Grand Forks Herald --- UND athletic director Brian Faison and five of his head coaches will hit the road this morning to attend press conferences in Fargo, Bismarck and Minot in hopes of spreading the word about the consequences of retaining the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

The trip comes one week before a statewide vote on Measure 4, which would allow the university to retire the nickname and logo.

“This is an opportunity for us to have our coaches available to answer questions about Measure 4 and how it affects their programs,” Faison said. “The most important thing is these individuals are the ones who have to deal with the consequences on a day-to-day basis. This is a good opportunity to communicate about the facts.”

Next Tuesday June 12th voters will go to the polls to decide four ballot measures as well as primary candidates for Senate, Congress and Governor.

Spirit Lake nickname supporters to appeal

Here is the latest in the Fighting Sioux nickname – A notice of intent to appeal was filed with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week by lawyer Reed Soderstrom – I am not a lawyer by any stretch of the imagination, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I cant see an appeals courting taking this case. I am going to predict that the appeal will be thrown out as well. Maybe one of our resident lawyers can give us some free legal advice...

Chuck Haga, Grand Forks Herald --- Fighting Sioux nickname supporters at the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe have signaled they intend to appeal U.S. District Judge Ralph Erickson’s dismissal of their lawsuit against the National Collegiate Athletic Association. A notice of intent to appeal was filed with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals this week by Reed Soderstrom, a Minot attorney who represents the pro-nickname Committee for Understanding and Respect, which sued the NCAA over its efforts to have UND drop the nickname and related Indian-head logo. The committee, authorized by Tribal Council action to speak for the tribe on matters relating to the nickname and logo, had sought at least $10 million in damages from the NCAA. It also sought reversal of the 2005 NCAA policy discouraging use of American Indian names and imagery by member schools.

I love the Fighting Sioux nickname, and there is no way that the school will ever be able to replace the Fighting Sioux nickname with anything that I consider to be acceptable, but I don’t see any way UND can keep the name “unless” the Spirit Lake Tribe wins it’s appeal against the NCAA, the cards are stacked against them this time as well. I also would love nothing more than to see the NCAA lose their law suit – I think they deserved to have that happen to them because I think they are a bunch of hypocrites. I am not holding my breath but I hope the Tribe wins.

This story has taken so many twists and turns that sometimes I have to look twice to see who is doing the talking. You probably watched the video above - the Spirit Lake Tribe's Committee for Understanding and Respect is not happy with the UND Alumni Association for running ads in favor of retiring the Fighting Sioux nickname.

Chuck Haga, Grand Forks Herald --- In a lengthy statement released by the Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe’s Committee for Understanding and Respect and the Save the Sioux Ballot Measures Committee, nickname supporters objected to the claim that “our name and likeness” could hurt UND, its student athletes and the athletics program.

“We resent this fabricated distortion and lie as an attempt to disguise the truth by creating a fear in the public,” which according to the statement has shown “overwhelming support” for use of the Sioux name at UND.

“The Sioux name and symbol instilled pride, honor and respect in (UND) athletes and filled them with the Fighting Sioux spirit,” according to the statement.
“We now find 80 years of tradition and culture under a senseless attack by those who have previously embraced these traditions and culture. This is an attack at the heart and soul of UND from within.”

Other diehard nickname supporters, including some UND alumni, have sharply criticized Tim O’Keefe, executive vice president of the alumni groups, for “abandoning” a nickname he once heartily supported and a logo he wore as a UND Fighting Sioux hockey player.

I love the Fighting Sioux nickname and I think it’s the best logo in all of college sports or professional sports – nothing that they replace the Fighting Sioux nickname with will ever be good enough in my opinion. I have never wavered from that opinion, but like other Alumni that have actually attended class at the University of North Dakota, I know that UND can’t go on forever with the Fighting Sioux nickname and I don’t want to see the University hurt by the sanctions.

Here is the latest news in the UND Fighting Sioux Nickname debate that broke this after noon.

Chuck Haga, Grand Forks Herald ---- Leaders of the UND Alumni Association and Foundation have scheduled news conferences in Grand Forks and other North Dakota cities Tuesday to launch a campaign in support of Measure 4 on the June 12 primary ballot.

As it will appear on the ballot, approving the measure would reaffirm the Legislature’s repeal of a law requiring UND to keep the Fighting Sioux nickname, opening the way once again for the university to retire the name and associated Indian-head logo.

Tim O’Keefe, executive vice president of the UND Alumni Association, and Rick Burgum, chairman of the foundation, will join local UND alumni at the news conference in Grand Forks, Fargo, Bismarck and Minot.

O’Keefe, Burgum and other alumni leaders have spoken against efforts to retain the nickname, saying they fear serious consequences for UND’s athletics program and students athletes.

Immediately some will question Tim O’Keefe loyalty to Fighting Sioux Sports and to the nickname. There will be others that will say that O’Keefe was ordered by the UND administration to say this or call him and the others other alumni leaders in this campaign turn-coats or a toady.  They might want to think again, O’Keefe does have credibility, he was a letter winner with the UND Hockey team back in the late 1960’s and early 1970’s. Lastly, I would love to see someone tell former Viking fullback/tight end Jim Kleinsasser a sell out or a toady.

Miles Koules "won't" be going to UND

Brad Elloitt Schlossman reported on his media blog and as well in the Grand Forks Herald that Miles Koules has backed out of his commitment and now will not be going to UND. Koules will instead play for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. This is the third recruit from the NTDP team to de-committ and go to the CHL.

There seems to be something going on at the NTDP wonder if the UND coaches will continue to recruit kids from the USNDT after being spurned by another one this weekend, counting J.T. Miller, Stephan Matteau and now Miles Koules. 

Just a hunch I wouldn't count on Seth Jones going to UND. This was on his Twitter Page yesterday.

UND Hockey coach Dave Hakstol weighs in on the nickname ...

Fighting Sioux head hockey coach Dave Hakstol spoke out today at the Wednesday press conference about the continued use of the Fighting Sioux nickname.

I believe that coach Hakstol has unfairly taken a lot of heat by some, that want to blame him for the Sioux nickname debacle. Today the Fighting Sioux hockey coach weighed in on the issue.
