Sunday Links

I have to admit that It’s been tough waiting for this Thursday’s Frozen Four, the suspense is killing me. There has been a lot of stuff going on this week and I thought I would get you up to date if you haven’t seen the links and stories out there for this week’s upcoming Frozen Four.

The Fighting Sioux hockey team has been cleaning up in the individual awards.

Aaron Dell was awarded the INCH Goaltender of the Year and Matt Frattin was awarded the College Hockey News Player of the year.

Chay Genoway was on the Minnesota Wild Hockey Radio click here to listen to the podcast. [click to listen]

Julie Robenhymer of Hockey Buzz has a feature on Matt Frattin.

That was what Gilberto Frattin has been hoping to hear since those discussions in the family kitchen.

“I’m a little bit of an old-fashioned type of guy,” he said. “I believe that if you don’t bury your skeletons, they come back to haunt you.

“He made all of the right choices. I’d never take any credit for that. We just gave him support.”

The hit that injured Chay Genoway

Before you take my head off, I know, I know, it's not a great video because I used my wife's digital camera to record the video, I also don't have a very strong hand either, however, it does show the hit that Chay was injured on. I am in the process of looking to purchase a DVD video recorder so if you have one you would suggest that I buy let me know what you recommend and I will look into purchasing one.

Let me say this, the hit on Genoway was clean and it didn't look good, I am not a doctor, nor did I stay in a Holiday Inn Express but I wouldn't be surprised if Chay is out for a very long time. I hope not.

Dell gets "Housed" - Black Bears 7 Sioux 3

The title of this blog post is a play with words, It came to mind after I witnessed the goal by Tanner House against the Sioux in the second period of last night's game. But I digress, I think the College hockey news sums up last night’s game on their front page quite accurately; “Maine pummeled visiting North Dakota in the night's biggest non-league match up, 7-3.” Last night’s game was embarrassing to say the least, the UND Fighting Sioux were on the big stage playing a big time opponent on CBS College Sports and they failed to show up prepared to play hockey.

I would describe last night’s game as an old fashion ass whopping, the Fighting Sioux were beat in every aspect of the game, in the defensive zone they were turning the puck over and losing the races to loose pucks in both ends of the ice, the Fighting Sioux goaltending was brutal as neither goaltender looked like they had their head in the game, and the Sioux forwards play in the neutral zone was God awful.

Defense a strong point?

While defense is supposed to be a strong point of the 2010-2011 version of the UND Fighting Sioux the team looked like a big, slow, lumbering team. The experienced UND Fighting Sioux Defense were beat to the puck all night long and the Fighting Sioux defense looked like a bunch of road cones, the game film will not lie. I never thought I would see Chay Genoway (0-0-0 4/-3) get beat down the ice to the puck like he did against Maine Sophomore Forward Matt Mangene. That play kind of illustrated how the game went for the Sioux last night.

To be a fly on the wall next week

I would love to be able to watch practice this next week as the Sioux prepare for the Denver Pioneers, it should be all business after being blitzed by a hungrier Maine team. I would also have loved to be a fly on the wall after the first period of last night’s game and after the game. It sounds like UND Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol was not impressed with last night's effort.
“We stood around and watched a good team play well,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “Our feet weren’t moving. We weren’t sharp in any one part of our game. That’s it.”
The Maine Black Bears that stood out for me last night were Junior Forward Brian Flynn (2g-0a-2pts), Junior Forward Gustav Nyquist (1g-1-2pts), Senior Forward Tanner House (1g-1a-2pts), Senior Forward Robby Dee (1g-1a-2pts), Sophomore Forward Joey Diamond (0g-2a-2pts), Junior Defenseman Will O’Neil (0g-1a-1pts) and Junior Forward Spencer Abbott (0g-2a-2pts), these guys skated around, through and over the Sioux defenders all night.

Would someone make a save please!

While I can’t tag all of the Maine goals on the Fighting Sioux goaltenders because the defense was brutal last night and looked like a bunch of pylons the Sioux goaltenders have to start making saves and playing better, because they were God awful last night, and they have less than impressive this season so far to date. That’s not saying that they haven’t played well in stretches they have to start making more saves at key times in the game. I have said this before and had my head taken off by Brad Eidsness admirers’/apologists'
(I want to preface this by saying have nothing against the kid) that goaltending is the weak link on this hockey team, Eidsness and Dell have to be better and they haven’t been very good at all this season and their numbers speak for themselves. Also, Chay Genoway is an awesome defensive defenseman and is great at getting the puck up ice but his blunders were obvious last night.

Here is a look at the goaltending numbers
Aaron Dell,(2-1-0) GAA 2.46 Save Percentage .881
Brad Eidsness, (1-0-1), GAA 4.46 Save Percentage .762

Bemidji State men's hockey set to open WCHA play, BREC vs. North Dakota

It's game time, no tickets to be had.
Bemidji Pioneer ---The players are anxious. The coaches are anxious. The fans are anxious.

The community is anxious …

It’s time to drop the puck and get this thing started.

The Bemidji State men’s hockey team is geared up for an historic weekend, opening a new arena as a full-fledged member of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association. The Beavers start the historic 2010-11 season today, hosting national power North Dakota (No. 2 nationally) at the recently completed Bemidji Regional Event Center. Game time is set for 7:37 p.m. Friday.

The series is a sell-out and the hottest ticket for an event in Bemidji in many, many years.

“We’re ready to play hockey,” said BSU head coach Tom Serratore. “It’s going to be a weekend full of excitement, but we need to focus on the task at hand – competing against the top ranked team in our league.”

Sioux 5 - Bisons 2

First; I thought the game was kind of a yawner and the Sioux played very sloppy at times, however, that is probably to be expected since they haven’t had many practices under their belt, I was told that the Fighting Sioux hockey team had like one practice before this game. I also thought Manitoba was a bit cheap and took a lot of runs that UND’s skilled players. I am not sure I would put them in the hack category but they did seem to play with a bit of a edge. It’s one thing to play hard but I don’t think it’s necessary to try and start a brawl during an exhibition game, we would like to save the brawling for conference opponents like the Pioneers and the Gophers.

Second; I thought that Manitoba Bison defenseman Chris Benias and Zachery Tully were a couple of punks. Tully’s hit on Pointer in the corner during the third period was unacceptable and should have been a penalty, I don’t know if it was of the “Major Penalty” variety but it was definitely a hit to the head and could have been five and a game misconduct. Here is the video from the NCAA ice hockey rules committee and at 12:00 they show the definition of major penalty for hits to the head.

Just a few observations from last night's game...

Corban Knight – I thought Knight played well last night and looked good playing at the center. I also thought Knight played a strong physical game. I think Corban Knight is ready to break out this season and fill the net with pucks the up side on this kid is very good.

Mike “Ocho” Cichy – I thought Mike Cichy looked pretty good last night and it would be a plus to have him playing at a higher level to start the season. Last year coach Hakstol said that Cichy came into came out of shape and this season Mike appears to be leaner and in better shape. From the sidelines it would appear that his hard work might have paid off.

Derek Forbort – I think that Forbort is going to fit right into the Sioux line up and didn’t look out of place at one bit. I was impressed with Forbort’s poise in the defensive zone.

Chay Genoway – I think Chay looked a little rusty from only playing nine games last season but I believe he will get back up to speed after a few games and practices.

Brock Nelson – I think Nelson showed us a glimpse of the future and will only get better as the season unwinds. I also expect that he will gain some much needed muscle during the season as he gets into the weight room.

Matt Frattin – Wow! What can you say but Fratts was a beast last night, he looks bigger, stronger, faster, meaner and ready to make an impact on the WCHA. His shot from the point last night on the power play was a laser and it appeared as if it was shot out of a howitzer.

Dillon Simpson – Although he didn’t play that much, I thought that Simpson looked a bit like a deer in the head lights last night. I would say that he will probably be the extra to start the season for the Sioux on defense.

Couple of things... DU and UND week.

The Voice of the Fighting Sioux Radio Tim Hennessey has a new video show on Fightingsioux.com

The Fighting Sioux have a new comitted recruit. Former Edmonton Oiler's great Craig Simpson's kid Dillon Simpson has comitted to the University of North Dakota.
Over the weekend Dillon Simpson committed to the University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The 16 year old rookie defenceman with the Spruce Grove Saints has 8 goals and 34 points this year in 47 games with the number one ranked Junior A team in the country. Simpson has heated up recently wiht 7 points hin his past 4 games. He was an 8th round choice of the Kelowna Rockets in the 2008 WHL bantam draft, but would have gone much higher, possibly in the first round had he not been leaning towards the NCAA. [Coming down the pipe]
In reading the City Beat blog post on the Fighting Sioux name, I really believe the name is on life support and is a dead logo walking unless the Standing Rock Tribe acts on a vote for the Fighting Sioux logo. UND is so desperate to get into a conference they will just throw the Fighting Sioux logo under the bus without a fight. Buy all of the Fighting Sioux gear that you can, because it's not going to be around much longer, I can only wonder what gay logo the University of North Dakota will come up with to replace the Fighting Sioux logo with?

I want a know who the Board of Higher Education is going to blame for the fall out that comes after they drop the Fighting Sioux logo. There will be a lot of fall out for dropping the Fighting Sioux logo. Who is the State Board of Higher Education going to throw under the bus? The political leadership did nothing to help with this situation either, the governor and team ND (aka the Three Amigos) were AWOL as well.

This is what our University President had to say about the logo. All Robert Kelley sees the logo as nothing more than a controversy or a hindrance; this is why I am not for non North Dakota being in leadership positions at the University of North Dakota. I would really laugh if the University jumped through all of these hoops to get into the mediocre mid major that is the Summit League to only get told that they aren’t accepted.

UND President Robert Kelley: In my conversations with many, but not all, the presidents of Summit League presidents' council, I believe we are in the best position we can possibly be at the present time, pending resolution of this controversy. All the things Mr. Faison said are absolutely true and I do believe that we would be welcomed in the Summit League based upon the conversations I've had with many of the members.

KFAN talks hockey

Ryan Cardinal was on KFAN today with Paul Allen and talked about the Fighting Sioux and Minnesota Gophers series this weekend down in Minneapolis.
[listen to the broadcast here]

PA and Cardinal are on with 16:45 left in the middle hour of the broadcast. A couple of things that caught my attention while UND has been 4th and 6th in the national rankings they are sitting at 9th in the pairwise, I don't know if I am ready to say that UND is an elite team. I think UND is a good team that should make the NCAA tourney if they keep playing consistent. The Fighting Sioux have a lot of potential to make some noise in the national tourney, if they can play consistent.

I also thought I heard Cardinal say that he kind of admires the way UND plays the game, interesting because a lot of Gopher fans I know think they play a rough and tumble goon hockey.

On the UND defense: Joe Finley might have been walked a few times in the Mariucci Arena, but that is history, I believe Andrew MacWilliam is a much better skater than Finley was and plays against all of the top players in the WCHA. While I wasn't a Finley hater by any stretch of the imagination, I think MacWilliam is a better defender than Joe Finley.

Here is a link to the write up that Ryan Cardinal did for Gopher Puck Live.

So, while it’s nice that the Gophers have been able to string some wins together and get back above .500 for the first time all season, it should not be lost on fans that they still haven’t shown the ability to consistently beat average to above average teams, and that is all they play the rest of the way, starting with North Dakota this weekend at Mariucci.

So far this season, the Gophers have been awful against good teams, which is why they are facing a big up-hill battle to get home-ice for the WCHA playoffs and making the NCAA Tournament. Minnesota is 3-9-1 vs. teams with a winning record, and only 1-5-0 at home in those games. The atmosphere at Mariucci Arena this season has been pretty marginal, due to the team playing at a lower level than they have in years past, but also due to the fact they have played a pretty soft home schedule and, when they’ve played good teams, they’ve been handled by the Denver and Minnesota Duluth’s of the world.

The Sioux came into this season with high expectations despite having 10 freshman on their roster, and got off to a hot start, going 7-1-1, including taking three of four points against the Gophers to start the season in Grand Forks. However, in a 4-2 series-opening victory over St. Cloud State on Nov. 13, SCSU’s Aaron Marvin hit UND defenseman Chay Genoway from behind, with the 6-3, 205 lb. Marvin essentially cross-checking the 5-9, 174 lb. Genoway’s head into the glass. Genoway, who had 10 points in nine games at that point and was likely on pace for a first-team All-American selection, suffered a concussion and hasn’t played since, and his prognosis for the rest of the season is still up in the air.
--------------------------------
From a Minnesota perspective, the Gophers are going to have to hope their improved play of late translates as the speed limit goes (way) up this weekend, as Head Coach Don Lucia likes to say. Between Minnesota’s offensive issues and North Dakota’s defensive prowess, the Gophers hopes to winning this weekend could fall on the shoulders of junior goalie Alex Kangas, who will for sure get the start on Friday, and likely against on Saturday unless the wheels really come off in game one of the series. Kangas has shown the ability in the past to steal games, and he may have to do that more than once during the next few months if this team is going to ascend in the WCHA standings. The Sioux have had Kangas’ number, as he’s just 1-4-1 all-time against the Sioux, and has a save percentage of .854 save percentage in his last three starts against the Sioux, all Gopher losses. Now, four of his five starts have been at Ralph Engelstad Arena, which is a hostile building for any goalie to have to play in.

Coach Hakstol on last weekend.

Check out what the head coach Dave Hakstol had to say about the weekend series. No excuses the team didn't deal well with adversity.

DU 1 - UND 0

Round one of the Hatfield’s and McCoy’s went to the Denver Pioneers. Since 2003-2004 UND has lost three 1-0 games to DU. Last time the Sioux lost 1-0 to the Pioneers (2007-2008 season) the Fighting Sioux rebounded the next night to win the game 3-1. Last night I was unimpressed with the Fighting Sioux effort to start the game, you have a goalie that hasn’t played in three weeks and the Fighting Sioux should have been all over him to start the game. The Fighting Sioux could not cycle the puck and set up a sustained attack on the Denver goalie. Instead the Fighting Sioux let him get comfortable and instead spent the first part of the game back on their heals, looking like a cellar dweller instead of a team that was ranked second in the nation.

Undisciplined effort

The Fighting Sioux came out and for the first period and a decided that they were going to take a bunch of untimely, undisciplined and knuckle headed penalties. You can not continue to give a team like DU a bunch of power plays because eventually they will figure it out.

Not time to panic yet

This is the best start of Hakstol era at 7-3-1, last year at this time the Fighting Sioux were an unimpressive 4-7-1 and went on to win the WCHA regular season title. Never-the-less, if the Fighting Sioux play like this next week against the Miami RedHawks it could be an embarrassing and painful experience. The Fighting Sioux need to regroup and at least get a tie out of tonight’s game.

Put on notice

Finally, there are a few players that are not playing to their full potential. One might say that they are passengers so far this season and need to step it up. Again I realize that it's early in the season but there is an expectation when a player puts on that uniform.

Sophomore Jason Gregoire 5g-0a-5pts in 11 games, he needs to step it up and start putting some points on the board.
Freshman Michael Cichy 1g-2a-3pts in 9 games, he needs to step it up as well he hasn’t had a point since the 10th of October.

Sioux 4 Huskies 2

As one of my friends said tonight Sioux win over the SCSU Huskies was a ho hum win. I think he is right and it wasn’t a very exciting game and the Sioux did enough to win the game. One could call tonight's win gritty. I also never felt like UND was going to lose this game or let it get away from them.

The Fighting Sioux raced to a 3-0 lead with goals by Darcy Zajac, Mario Lamoureux, David Toews before they gave up two untimely goals by Ryan Lasch and Tony Mosey of the SCSU Huskies. David Toews padded his point total by scoring his second goal of the game in the third period to seal the game for the Fighting Sioux.

For the Sioux I thought that Ben Blood had a break out performance and one of his best games offensively in a Fighting Sioux uniform. If Blood keeps playing like this he will be wearing a Senators uniform very soon. Also, David Toews was nothing short of amazing tonight his two goals were high light material.

Home Sweet Ralph

The Ralph Engelstad Arena. has become a tough place for opponents to play in as UND has not lost in 17 games dating back to last season when the Fighting Sioux started the streak against the game SCSU Huskies.

No room for CFB's in hockey

I am sick and tired of watching players check their opponent head first into the boards. Someone is going to get hurt and possibly maimed if players can’t respect their opponents. The rules are cut and dried and pretty black and white, if an opposition player has their back is turned and they are facing away from you; they cannot be checked. There is no discussion.

Checking from Behind – A check from behind is a check delivered on a player who is not aware of the impending hit, therefore unable to protect or defend himself, and contact is made on the back part of the body.
Tonight we watched a bush league checking from behind play that could land UND’s top defenseman Chay Genoway on the injury list. Aaron Marvin's checking from behind on Chay Genoway was blatant, unnecessary, uncalled for and Marvin needs to be suspended for another game or two.

Edit: I just went back and watched the bush league Marvin hit five times. This is one of the dirtiest checking from behind hits I have seen for some time. Genoway took the puck up ice in an end to end rush. Genoway had the puck checked off his stick by number 3 Sam Zabkowicz and Marvin came in and pounded Chay's head into the boards with a high elbow to the back of Genoway's head. This was a dirty blatant inexcusable hit. If this hack gets to play tomorrow night the Sioux players need to answer this gutless act. I can't believe that Husky coach Bob Motzko had the gall to argue about this call with the ref on the players bench.

Garrett Roe suspended for first game against Sioux.

The SCSU Huskies will be without one of their top players when they play the Fighting Sioux on Friday night. Garrett Roe as been suspended for violating a team rule. I guess the Sioux fans won't have to witness any diving the first game of the series.
Entering perhaps their toughest stretch of the season on Friday at second-ranked North Dakota, the St. Cloud State men's hockey team will get a boost with the return of two forwards from injury. However, it might take both Travis Novak and David Eddy to make up for the loss of another, Huskies leading scorer Garrett Roe, who will miss the series opener against the Sioux because of a one-game suspension.

Roe, a junior who has two goals and six assists through eight games, will be a healthy scratch for the first time in his college career because he "broke a team rule," according to SCSU coach Bob Motzko, who would not elaborate.
Roe missed one game because of an army injury as a rookie — and has 101 career points while appearing in 85 of 86 career games. He practiced with the Huskies' fifth line on Monday and Tuesday at the National Hockey Center and again Wednesday at the Municipal Athletic Complex.
He also had a bruised left eye, but both Motzko and Roe maintained that had nothing to do with his suspension. When asked why he wouldn't be playing Friday, Roe — who is making the trip to Grand Forks — referred questions to Motzko.
"I really can't say — but it was nothing big and it wasn't because of a fight, I'll tell you that," said Roe, who wouldn't explain his bruised eye. "Other than that, I can't tell you anything. I can't give details on my personal life." [Saint Cloud Times]
