Finley, Frattin face disorderly conduct charges.

As most of you know by now Joe Finley and Matt Frattin had a run in with the law recently. It's in the newspapers around the region. I have already received numerous emails and phones calls from various people giving me their thoughts on the matter, before I even got out of bed this morning. Personally, I don't like commenting on conduct issues because a lot of times there is more to the story that what ends up in a police report/blotter or in the news paper.

Before you say, 'but, but Goon..." Yes! I know, this incident doesn't reflect well on Coach Hakstol, the University of North Dakota or the Fighting Sioux Hockey team. I am sure the Finley and Hakstol haters will have more ammunition to blast away now with this incident. I am sure there will be some in the media down in Fargo that will call for Frattin to be disciplined, suspended and or kicked off the UND hockey team. I’m also sure coach Hakstol will take care of this matter in a way that he sees fit. We may not hear what the actual punishment was, nor do we need to know the details. Again, this was a stupid incident and I am not defending it. I am also not going to spend all day condemning it as well.

Don’t get me wrong! I don't approve of this behavior, this is a silly incident that will be remembered long into next season, however, before you mean mouth these young men take this into account; did you ever get drunk and act stupid and have the cops called on you? When you were younger and alcohol was involved, did you ever do something like this? Did you ever get cited for underage drinking or a loud party or starting a fight? These guys make the same mistakes a lot of us have made but weren’t a member of the hockey team.
BallHype: hype it up!

  1. Like it or not though, athletes, celebrities etc. are held to a higher standard and I don't think any of would really care about this if it was just the disorderly conduct. But the two of them appeared really stupid with Finley giving a false name and Frattin possibly getting charged with a flee.

  2. I should add that none of this should affect views of the UND hockey team as athletes everywhere get in trouble whether it is underage drinking down at the U or the alleged sexual assault a few years back by a Bemidji hockey player that was eventually dropped.

  3. Hey Goon,

I read the article last night bc Dirty clued me in, but did they mention if they were drunk? You're not explicitly stating it but your last paragraph kind of implies that they were, but we don't know if that's true.

I don't doubt for a second that a couple of college-aged boys could get into plenty of trouble stone cold sober. :)

  4. Nm, the Strib states explicitly that "alcohol was involved."

  6. I know this crap happens all over the place, but why do we hear about so many drunken arrests at UND :P Are the Grand Forks police just THAT anal? Regardless though, it doesn't matter if you're a hockey player or not, if you're gonna throw stuff as big as a lawnmower into a major road, you're gonna get boned. You'd just think someone who is going to school for free to play hockey would try to avoid drunk and disorderly arrests to maintain their status. The quote made the whole article all the more cuter though,

"The maturity that North Dakota gave me, to understand time management, living on your own, all of those things."

  8. Goon, you try to not write or comment on this stuff because, face it, you would be doing so all the time! Ha ha. Your team just can't see to stay out of trouble.

Then again, what else is there to do in GF besides party it up and do stupid things?

Not saying it's ok or anything but at least when the majority of these hockey stories come through it's stupid "frat boy like" behaviors and prank-type thing...to serious beatings, drugs, and other felonies like we see coming out of basketball and football players. Yes basketball and football fans, start crabbing at me for that.

I'm not saying hockey players are innocent...just dumb drunk kids doing stupid things that need to think twice because they are at a higher standard.

Also, since it' seems to be a trend at UND perhaps Hak should lay down the law with his players.
