Minnesota Wild: Is an outdoor game on the horizon in 2015-16?

Here's another little nugget from Michael Russo's article. I wonder which college hockey teams would be involved in the outdoor hockey game?

Michael Russo, Startribune – Originally, the Wild was supposed to host a stadium-series outdoor game against Dallas at Target Field. However, only San Jose will host one this season.

According to an NHL source, the Wild is at the “top of the list” for a stadium-series game and was scheduled to have a game this year. What held it up was timing and logistics, the source said. According to another source, the Wild wants to make a stadium-series game a colossal event accompanied by outdoor high school and college games.

The league, however, wanted the game to be in February, and by the time that decision was made, the local colleges had already booked their schedules for next season. In addition, Target Field was worried the game would be played too close to the 2015 Twins season and would wreak havoc on its field.

This is the best news that I have heard all week. Trading goalie Niklas Backstrom would free up need roster and cap space for Darcy Kuemper who emerged as the goalie of the future. During the 2013-14 season, Kuemper had a (12-8-4, .915 SV% and a 2.37 GAA).

Michael Russo, Startribune -- Chuck Fletcher has a history of draft-day trades and spent last week working the phones.

“Everyone calls everybody,” the Wild GM said. “You don’t see a whole bunch of trades the week prior to the draft. It’s all about trying to figure out who your likely dance partners can be the week at the draft. It’ll take a move or two to get the ball rolling, and then there’s usually a domino-type effect. We’re not there yet.”

Fletcher has been shopping center Kyle Brodziak, sources say, and may be willing to retain salary and cap space to trade goalie Niklas Backstrom, who is recovering well from season-ending abdominal and hip surgeries.

UND recruit Ryan Mantha on the Pipeline show

UND recruit defensmen Ryan Mantha, at least for now, was on the Pipeline show with Guy Flamming. You can listen to the show by clicking on this link. Doesn't sound like he's all in, at least when it comes to going to UND. Where's Mantha going (UND or OHL), it will depend on what team drafts him. He'll decide where he's going after the 2014 NHL Entry Level Draft.

NHL Releases 2014-15 Schedule

Today, the National Hockey League released it's 2014-15 schedule. As soon as the NHL releases their television schedule, I will post some games of interest.

Perusing the schedules, I found a few items of interest. My two favorite NHL teams, the Boston Bruins and the Minnesota Wild will meet on October 28, 2014, at the TD North Garden. They two teams meet at the Xcel Energy Center on December 17,2014.

The Boston Bruins play the Winnipeg Jets on Friday November 28, 2014 at the Boston Garden. On Friday December 19, 2014 the Bruins play the Winnipeg Jets in at the MTS Centre.

The Minnesota Wild and the Colorado Avalanche kick off the regular season with a home-and-home series. This should prove to be interesting, because the Wild eliminated the Av's in the first round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Also, this will be the first meeting between Matt Cooke and Avalanche defenseman Tyson Barrie. Cooke took out Barrie with a dirty leg check.

If you haven’t seen this article over on sayanythingblog, it’s worth a look. Eunice Davidon weighs in on the Redskins name and she has some very interesting points. Davidson is an enrolled member of the Spirit Lake Nation.

A CNN reporter stated that 30% of Native Americans are offended by the names and logos, but what about the 70% of us who support and take pride in those names and images? Don’t we count for anything? Other independent surveys have found 80 to 90% support names and images. Sports Illustrated and Attenburg Election Survey among others have found this to be true. They don’t have a dog in the fight, so we put more stock in them.

But even 70 percent is a large number.

The US Patent Office for 80 years has recognized the Redskins as legitimate and not hostile, what has changed? They also found the UND Fighiting Sioux logo and nickname – also trademarked – to not to be not hostile. The Patent Office is supposed to follow the law, not political agendas. And this is political agenda.

Is it Senate Majority Leader Harry Reed with way too much power that has caused this? He has used that power to divide, not unite?

It is none of his business and we ask him to quit speaking over us Indians, as if he were a God. Harry Reid’s comments towards the Redskin name are nothing new from corrupt politicians. Politicians have always used a small handful of Native Americans to achieve their personal agenda and goals. If he really cared about us, he would talk to all Native Americans, not just those that fit his agenda.

Here’s a point that doesn’t get discussed very often. What about the Native American that take great pride in Native Americans logos and aren’t offended by the names and logos? There are quite a few out there. Do we just discount and ignore them?

I don’t know, I don’t think so.

If 70% of the Native Americans aren’t offended by the sports teams that use Native American names and logos that means a majority of Native Americans aren’t offended. What are we suppose to glean from that?

I predict that there’s going to be great pressure on teams that use Native American nicknames and imagery very soon. I see it coming. It’s just a matter of time before the pressure is on the Blackhawks, Seminoles, Chippewa’s and Utes to change their names and logos. It’s coming. Mark it down.

WASHINGTON POST: Capitals hosting Blackhawks in 2015 Winter Classic

Today we find out that the Winter Classic is going to be the Washington captials and the Chicago Blackhawks. Yep, I am underwhelmed as well. Now I get the Blackhawks, I do. But outside of Alex Ovechkin, who really stands out on the Captials for you? This doesn't smack as much a much see game.

Alex Prewitt, Washington Post -- The Washington Capitals will host the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2015 Winter Classic on New Year’s Day at a yet-to-be-announced location, an individual with knowledge of the situation confirmed Friday morning.

The Capitals will be playing in their second Winter Classic after visiting Pittsburgh in 2011, but will be hosting for the first time. The site has not yet been named, though sources indicated that Nationals Park remains the odds-on favorite, with only paperwork left to be finalized before the news is released.

Washington and Chicago met twice in 2013-14, in the regular-season opener and the penultimate game for both sides. The Blackhawks won at home, 6-4, on Oct. 1; the Capitals posted a 4-0 shutout at Verizon Center on April 11. The sides have split eight regular-season meetings over the past four seasons. Last season, the Blackhawks reached the Western Conference finals before losing to eventual Stanley Cup champion Los Angeles in seven games. The Capitals, meanwhile, missed the postseason for the first time since 2006-07 and parted ways with their head coach (Adam Oates) and general manager (George McPhee).

2015 NHL Winter Classic: Minnesota Wild Snubbed Again

Looks like the Minnesota Wild will be getting snubbed again for the 2015 NHL's Winter Classic. I guess by now, none of us are going to be shocked anymore, since California is getting a second outdoor game before the State of Hockey is awarded one. I wrote a similar story about this over on the Hockey Wilderness this week. I guess the Wild are high profile enough to be selected by the NHL.

Greg Wyshynski, Puck Daddy – The news was first reported by Bob McKenzie with TSN, and confirmed to Yahoo Sports by multiple sources.

It’s the second Classic for both teams – the Blackhawks faced the Detroit Red Wings at Wrigley Field in 2009 while the Capitals played the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2011. But it’ll be the third outdoor game for the Blackhawks overall, having faced the Penguins at Solider Field in the Stadium Series last season.

Seattle Times, “Redskins” nickname offensive and outdated

Don Shelton, Seattle Times – It’s time to ban the use of “Redskins,” the absurd, offensive and outdated name of the NFL team in Washington, D.C.

Past time, actually.

We’ll probably receive scathing emails, letters, phone calls and reader comments telling me we’re too PC, that the name actually honors Native Americans or that we have no right to change a team’s official name.

Everyone’s entitled to an opinion – even if I don’t buy it.

We’re banning the name for one reason: It’s offensive. Far from honoring Native Americans, the term colors an entire race. Many Native Americans consider it an outdated label placed on their people.

Randy Lewis, a member of the Colville Confederated Tribes who is a board member for United Indians, didn’t pull any punches when asked what he thought.

“I find it as offensive as black people find the N-word,” he said. “They say they’re trying to dignify or honor something with it. It doesn’t dignify us. It doesn’t honor us. It doesn’t make us feel good about ourselves.”

Former Pittsburgh Penguin defenseman Ulf Samuelsson was one of the dirtiest players to play the game of hockey, now he's in the running for the the Penguins head coaching job. More reasons to not like the Penguins.

TSN.CA -- New York Rangers assistant coach and former NHL defenceman Ulf Samuelsson is on the list of candidates who's interviewed for the head coaching job with the Pittsburgh Penguins, according to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger.

Dreger reported on Tuesday that the Hurricanes sought permission from the Rangers to interview Samuelsson for their coaching vacancy.

Samuelsson played 16 seasons in the NHL with lenghty stints in both Pittsburgh and with the former Hartford Whalers.

United States Patent and Trademark Office Cancels the Redskins Trademark

So, The United States Patent and Trademark Office has cancelled the Redskins trademark registration. Another overreach by the Federal Government. This ruling doesn't mean that the Redskins need to change their name, yet. But this does mean that others could make money of the Redskins logo now.

Washington Post – The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled the Washington Redskins trademark registration, calling the football team’s name “disparaging to Native Americans.”

The landmark case, which appeared before the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board, was filed on behalf of five Native Americans. It was the second time such a case was filed. “This victory was a long time coming and reflects the hard work of many attorneys at our firm,” said lead attorney Jesse Witten, of Drinker Biddle & Reath.

Federal trademark law does not permit registration of trademarks that “may disparage” individuals or groups or “bring them into contempt or disrepute.” The ruling pertains to six different trademarks associated with the team, each containing the word “Redskin.”

In the past, Redskins Team Owner Team owner Daniel Snyder, has described the team’s name in a letter to fans as a “badge of honor,”and he has said he will never change it. Of course Democrats in the U.S. Senate have applauded the move.

Moving forward, I expect the Redskins to win in an appeal.

NHL Hockey: Fourth Line Players Expected to Contribute

I have said this in the past, fourth line players in the NHL are going to need to be able to fight and actually play the game of hockey. Gone are the days of the two fights, and three shift players. One dimensional goons like John Scotts aren’t going to have a job much longer because they’re a waste of a roster spot.

Amalie Benjamin, Boston Globe – The real question, perhaps, is whether the concept of the fourth line is shifting toward more skill, as the Bruins saw in the second round of the postseason, when the Canadiens got production from their fourth line (Brandon Prust, Daniel Briere, Dale Weise) and the Bruins did not.

That was the role the Bruins’ Merlot line played in the past, notably in the Stanley Cup Final against Vancouver, when they helped turn around Game 7. It was a line emulated throughout hockey, as teams realized they needed to roll four lines, as the Bruins did, to be successful.

With that in mind, it will be telling to see what happens to the large number of free agent enforcers this summer, with quite a few set to be unrestricted, a quirk of enforcers mostly getting short-term contracts. In addition to Thornton, George Parros, Paul Bissonnette, Kevin Westgarth and John Scott, among others, are without deals.

“I think if you look across the league, you look at more and more teams rolling four lines and getting some production out of the fourth line, like we’ve had for a number of years,” Neely said.

Should the Blues Trade T.J. Oshie?

One of my fellow writers from the Hockey Writers has suggested that the Blues trade former Fighting Sioux forward T.J. Oshie, while his stock is high. I would say no, unless it's going to be to the Wild or Bruins, but that's just me...

David Lipscomb, The Hockey Writers -- As the Blues have repeatedly shown in playoffs past, their failure to score the big goal and compensate for lineup holes was never more evident than in the 2013 playoffs versus the Chicago Blackhawks. If only the shootout was a factor in the postseason, Oshie might have had a bigger impact. However, there are teams (New Jersey Devils, I’m looking at you) that couldn’t crack the final eight due to shootout ineptitude, squandering valuable loser points. For them, the idea of gaining an asset like Oshie would help mitigate the PR and ticket sale backlash associated with missing the playoffs, while helping them potentially gain entry into a tournament where — especially in the East — almost anyone has a chance at a Finals run.

By now many Blues fans have already clicked off the page, enraged at the thought of selling off the youthful face of the franchise and breaking the hearts of South St. Louis girls everywhere. But consider this for a moment: would two solid forwards — picking on the Devils once again — Henrique and perhaps a veteran like Danius Zubrus — not help this team begin to overcome their postseason woes? Does anyone think Oshie’s stock and perception will ever be higher than it is now? What do you think the Devils would pay to make the playoffs and allow the chips to fall where they may? After coming within two wins of the Cup in 2012, they may think they’re on the precipice of being a real postseason threat in the East. Given the seemingly random nature of the teams that emerge from the East, they may be right.

Jordan Schmaltz compares his brother to Thomas Vanek

Interesting write up. This is one player that I can't wait to see put on the Green and White. I also don't think we need to worry about Nick Schmaltz going to the Windsor Spitfires of the OHL. This was even after the Spitfires went after him pretty hard to play there.

Mike G. Morreale - NHL.com --- It isn't by accident that Nick has followed the same path as his brother, Jordan. They both played for the Chicago Mission and the Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League. Nick will be a freshman at the University of North Dakota in 2014-15, where Jordan will be in his third season as a defenseman.

"Nick is a player with a very high hockey IQ, and I think his vision and creativity with the puck are his best attributes," Jordan Schmaltz said of his brother. "In my mind he plays like [Montreal Canadiens forward] Thomas Vanek with the way he can slow down the game.

"It's pretty cool to see us take the same path. We've always done the same things growing up and are really close. So it's only fitting we'll get a chance to play together at North Dakota."

I do wonder if there is any way that Nick could convince Kasperi Kapanen to come to North Dakota, too.

Does Taylor leaving NDSU change anything?

With Gene Taylor leaving Moo-U for the University of Iowa, one has to wonder if anything will have changed? Will UND and NDSU finally get to play in football? It will be interesting to see if NDSU will continue to insist on having all of the games at the Fargo Dome. Just for the record, UND went 6-0 against NDSU in all other sports. Obviously, NDSU is at the pinnacle of the FCS football ranks right now, but it would be awesome to see the two teams play again.

Tom Miller, Inforum.com -- Taylor’s move to deputy director of athletics at the University of Iowa – the newly created No. 2 position in the department – also breathes new life into the negotiations for the renewal of the University of North Dakota-NDSU football game.

The UND-Bison football rivalry has been on hold since 2003, when NDSU made the move up from Division II and UND stayed behind until joining the Division I ranks in 2007.

The recent negotiations between UND athletic director Brian Faison and Taylor certainly seemed to be at a stalemate, as was revealed by the Grand Forks Herald during an open records request of their email exchanges last month.

Ruh, roh! According to the Fargo Forum, NDSU Ad Gene Taylor is leaving NDSU for the University of Iowa.

NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor will leave the school, according to a report Monday morning.

Taylor told WDAY Sports Director Dom Izzo that he is leaving to take the Assistant Athletic Director position at the University of Iowa.
