UND 5 MTU 1

As I type this blog post the Seawolves just scored against the UMD Bulldogs to take a 3-2 win. UAA Senior forward Kevin Clark scored the game winning goal for the Seawolves. So there is a good chance that the Sioux can finish in 4th place in the WCHA standings, the Sioux hold the tie breakers against the Bulldogs. For the UAA fans that are down on their coach, I believe Dave Shyiak is a good head coach and has the UAA program going in the right direction. Shyiak's team this seaosn has only been swept once at home all season long, incidentally the Seawolves got more points against DU than the Gophers and Sioux combined.

Sioux start slow against the Huskies

I think it would be an understatement if I said the Fighting Sioux came out flat tonight to start the game against the MTU Huskies. The Sioux were behind and didn't score a goal until the 10:22 mark of the second period, it was then that the Sioux started getting things going and scored three goals in about a minute and twenty seconds.

MTU penalty kill dead last

You would have thought that Sioux would be licking their lips with the prospects of facing a team that is ranked dead last on the penalty kill. MTU is ranked 58th out 58 team nationally on the penalty kill and the Fighting Sioux went a lethargic and a pathetic 1/7 on the power play. That can not happen in the WCHA tourney and NCAA tourney if they want to be sucessful. Just for the Record UND is the 10th ranked team on the power play in the nation as well. I do have to give credit to the MTU goalie Kevin Genoe who was impressive and stopped 43/48 shots. Genoe is only a freshman and stopped 50 shots on goal last weekend against the Wisconsin Badgers and I like what I have seen of him this season. Genoe also stopped Brad Malone on a break away in the first period.

Zajac leads the way for the Sioux

The Sioux almost never lose when Dary Zajac scores a goal for the Fighting Sioxu. Tonight Zajac had a big night leading with a three point night (2g-1a-3pts). Zajac was a victim of the famous, "I intended to blow the whistle and that prevented Zajac from having a hat trick and a four point night.

  1. I think once again that Tech is a team of two good goaltenders (I think Josh Robinson will be a good one too) and absolutely NOTHING else of note.

Genoe is a good goaltender but how would anyone who hasn't watched Tech play know that? When we scored 3 straight goals, Tech's D folded like a cheap folding chair at fat camp.

Genoe reminds me a lot of former MTU goaltender Cam Elsworth. Not the best goaltender out there, but solid nonetheless. And Cam and Kevin can talk together on how they've got nothing to show for it.

Expect more of the same tonight.

  2. Folded like a cheap folding chair. Ugh, I actaully like how this team is playing right now. I think there is a lot of balance. I thought UND got away with a few miscues that could have been costly.

I watched the hit again on the DVR and I don't know maybe a two minute penalty. Frattin was hitting everything in sight last night and I was impressed with his game. You talk about a power forward Frattin is... It's too bad that he got into trouble last summer or he would have been a 20 goal player.

  3. Goon-

Quite honestly, it's not the same hit that Paukovich hit Bina with, but...

Schooley's facing the boards. Frattin's shoulder hits Schooley right between the shoulder blades and Schooley's face hits the boards... HARD.

Ok, maybe not a CFB, but I could definitely see a Boarding major on that hit. It was a dangerous hit, regardless of how well Frattin's playing.

Frattin didn't get his arms or stick up. Schooley wasn't hit in the head. But he wasn't diving either. Frattin's second hit featured an embellishment as the Tech player laid on the ice for a few seconds then got up and got right back into the play. Sorry, if it was a cheap hit or an illegal hit, he'd've not had to embellish at all... Assuming the refs are competent.

I'm not calling for a suspension. I'm not saying Frattin's cheap. I'm just saying that I thought the hit didn't look legal.

  4. I was surprised the ref didn't call boarding and Fratts went to the box and then they told him he didn't have a penatly.

  5. The best move of the night was after the scrum at the end of the game Lammy went by the MTU bench and gave them the yap, yap, yap sign with is hand. Classic.

  6. Really?

I think that was incredibly dumb by Mario.

WHy? Shepherd already has it in for him. He gave him a 1 game suspension for the whatever you call that "fight" with Marvin.

I bet Mario spends some time in the box tonight on some very "questionable" calls.

  7. Redwing77 I guess you missed it, he skated by the bench and gave them the yap, yap, yap signal basically to say, what talk, talk... I like his fire.
