Frattin gets a one game suspension

The WCHA Wheel of Justice has given Frattin a one game suspension, that didn't take long. No word if UND will appeal.
MADISON, Wis. – The Western Collegiate Hockey Association today (March 15, 2010) announced a one-game suspension to University of North Dakota hockey player Matt Frattin as a result of his actions in the March 13 game vs the University of Minnesota.

Frattin’s suspension was determined as a result of a review of the incident under the WCHA’s Supplementary Discipline Policy and Procedures.

Frattin will be required to serve this one-game suspension in his team’s next regularly scheduled game on Thursday, March 18 vs the University of Minnesota Duluth. [WCHA.COM]
Edit: First off the writers at Goon’s want to wish Kevin Wehrs a speedy recovery and that he will have no lingering affect from the hit. I don’t think any of us want to see a player from another team injured on the ice. There are those people that like to see players or race car drivers carried off the playing surface or track on a stretcher, no one that I know would take that point of view. Let’s hope that Wehrs will make a speedy recovery and be able to play next season with the Golden Gophers.

Moving forward, I kind of figured that a suspension from the league was coming for the hit in question. The focus will turn to the Sioux playing in the Final Five and the Sioux will have to play without Frattin for one game.

  1. Based on your quotation from the WCHA, they didn't offer an explanation. Reviewing the video, there was no clear contact to the head, but it was also very obviously a charge. I'm sure if the same had happened to one of our players, I'd support the discipline handed down. Frattin could have just as easily made a play on the puck, but instead he completed ignored the puck and just destroyed Wehr. The suspension seems appropriate.

  2. I'm ok with it.

But it reeks of me as a "My boy screwed up" type deal.

It's like the Marvin-Genoway debacle but without Marvin getting a misconduct.

I think Daddy thinks sonnyboy should've given Frattin a misconduct so he made peace with his closest coach, Lucia, by suspending him a game. To be fair, Lucia didn't have to drive cross town to convince Shepturd. He only had to call Shepturd and say "C'mon! I mean, c'mon!" And Shep acquiesced.

So, to clarify my confusing stance, I'm ok with Frattin missing time. However, I think if the officials were actually on the ball, the suspension would have been commuted instantly through a misconduct. Instead, Daddy to the rescue.

If Shepturd and McLoeser weren't such brown nosers, I'd say they're fighting to appease Lucia because they know the natives aren't happy.

Unfortunately, I think McLoeser and Shepturd are safe until retirement.

  3. Take off the green glasses. That suspension was 100% deserved and a bonehead move by Frattin.

  4. Agreed that was a bonehead play. Exciting at first to see a big hit like that but it was way uncalled for. Suspension was the right call. Hope Wehrs is ok and hope the sioux play well without frattin.

  5. not one word from a sioux fan comdemning the suspension. in fact, everybody is saying it is appropriate, yet a non-sioux fan immediately accuses us of wearing green colored glasses.

honestly, it's like they come on our site and just reply to what they think our stance will be rather than actually reading the posts and comments.

i'm sure it is strange not to see immediate defense of one's own player like every other team in the league does, regardless of the obviousness of the transgression (ie. st cloud's defense of marvin), but the very large majority of sioux fans have been posting their opinions that the hit was uncalled for and deserved a one game suspension before the suspension was even handed down so get off your high horse.

  6. About half her posts make references to "green glasses" or "kool-aid." Try being a little more creative. Your cliches are getting old.

  7. Frattin is just another "thug" in an on-going forgiving sports world. This man should not be allowed to play in the up-coming Frozen Five. There is no excuse for this type of bad behavior on the ice. University of North Dakota administration ought to step up to the plate and censure the coach as well.

  8. I don't think people are condoning the hit at all, and I will be honest, I thought there would be a lot of support for Frattin on this blog because I figured people would take the "who cares if Gopher players get hurt" stance or something juvenile like that. So it is nice to see that people are coming down on him just like they have come down on other bad hits this year.

There is no point in discussing the hit, but I will anyway. Seems pretty obvious that Frattin saw Malone get away with a borderline hit on the other side boards just seconds before his own hit on Wehrs. I don't think Malone should have been called for a penalty but he could have been. Frattin's was a stupid hit because it was bad timing and on a worthless player. The Sioux were dictating play the entire game so there is no need to charge someone into the boards, and certainly not a player like Wehrs who is completely worthless to the Gophers anyway. One game is enough but I agree it should have been handled in the game with a DQ.

I do disagree though with the post that somehow Minnesota fans will be happy that Lucia called and got Frattin suspended. Give me a break, it does nothing to make the fans swallow this season any easier because their season is still over and once again it was a complete failure. The fans are going to keep calling for Lucia's head until Minnesota is back in the Frozen Four, but until then they will want him out.

  9. Krango- love your use of "they come to OUR site"....last time I checked it was GOON's site...and also the last time I checked it is ME who is a registered author on Goon's World. Are you?!? My comment is to Goon. I always pick on him about Kool Aid and Green Glasses and so on. It's a personal thing because he and I are friends and I know him. He gets it.

Don't flatter yourself that my comment was anything about YOU on a site you think is YOURS.

    Seriously, get over yourself.

Anways, see ya this weekend Goonster...since my message is for you anyways!!

  10. Amy don't pick on my readers... Krangodance is a good solid reader/poster that that makes good observations about hockey.

Personally, I actually never stated my opinion on the Frattin matter...

  11. First and foremost I am very impressed to see that most ND fans are not bitching about this suspention. I am back and forth on it myself. I think it waranted more of a 5 minute major for charging personally. I will say this though, I think the reason most ND fans are ok with the suspention is mostly due to the fact that you guys have ben blogging all year about the dangerous hit on Genaway. IN other words, you are pretty much obligated to respond the way that you are. I would eb very interested to see if everyone had responded the same way if this was the first incident and first suspention of its sort. I think the blogs would be very different if that was the case. Just an opinion. Good luck Thursday night. I am still hoping for SCSU ND champioship game, although my squad will have to play 10 times better than they did against MSU to win 1 game this weekend.

  12. hey Goon man, thanks for this post.

He doesn't leave his feet and we're not having this conversation. I can't tell even with a clearer youtube video if he hit him in the head or not. I'm fine with the league suspending Frats for a game, but if anyone even dares try comparing this hit to the hit on Chay, they are just stupid.

Thanks Goon man. We'll see you Thursday.

  13. Goon- it's my job to pick on people. You know that.

Besides, that Krango guy is a tool. Read the stuff he writes in the comments. If it was my blog, I wouldn't consider him a good poster....if he was a honest poster and reader, he by now would know things I post are generally between you and I.

That aside, I think Heather and I will have to meet up with you guys pre-SCSU game on Friday or after the Friday night game because after the game we have to rush over to Target field for some special ticket holder deal and a tour. I'm pumped for that! :)

  14. I'm concerned that the league was unable or unwilling to say exactly what part of the hit made it suspension worthy.

Certainly it was a charge and the five minute penalty seemed appropriate.

I'm sure if the skate was on the other foot I'd be unhappy with anything but a suspension.

But why can't McCleod justify his decision?

  15. Mavs and Hunchright (actually wrong), you are way off. Frattin is no 'thug', actually a very clean player who is involved with less than one minor penalty per weekend played. He's been an exciting player to watch and hope he brings his A game back on Friday. If 'hunchright' thinks this guy should never play again, he should find a different sport. Here's a link to something more appropriate for the faint hearted... http://www.uswca.org/

This one game suspension is more than fair. It's done. Let's move on and beat Duluth. Let's beat UMD with the same physicality that brought The Fighting Sioux to the WCHA Final 5. Great job team, great job Frattin on a career weekend! Yes, you sit for a game...and yes, we all wish Wehrs the best.

  16. Dan,

LOL! I think I wrote the exact same post about marvins hit on Geoffrion 3 weeks ago or so, but I was beraded with Marvin is a goon emails from most of the UND faithful. And no offense, but there was 10 times the intent to injure in Frattins hit then Marvins (note that I think both deserved 5 miute majors, not suspensions). It is just funny how things are different when the shoe is on the other foot. I do agree that we should all stop worrying about these hits. They are inevitable in hockey! Just thought it was funny that your post was so similar in nature to mine, with such a different reaction from the posters on this site.

  17. Joe:

We're not OBLIGATED to do anything. It should have been a 5 minute major, and the suspension is warranted, according to the rules of hockey.

Just to be clear: Marvin IS a goon. 1 cheap hit on a star player, ok, maybe the kid just lost his head. 2 cheap, unnecessary hits on star players for 2 different teams that knock them out of action, you're a goon.

10 times the intent to injure for Frattin? Did Frattin follow the UM player the length of the ice to deliver a blow to the head?

Please stop posting, Joe, you are embarrassing yourself...

    ReplyDelete
  18. Joe, glad you got a laugh, but you can't compare...IN ANY WAY...Frattin's hit to Marvin's antics. I'm not going through the play by play of comparing the hits. It's like trying to argue with a liberal.

Fact. Aaron Marvin played 35 games with 14 pts. and 65 PIM's. Frattin played 21 games with 15 pts and 21 PIM's. Hardly thug status. He's made a heck of impact, and I'm one fan that glad he's on the ice.

I hope St. Cloud has an opportunity to meet Mr. Frattin in the playoffs.

  19. RJ,

honestly, why get mad. Just read what I wrote. I was comparing hit to Geoffrion hit, not the Genoway hit. I completely agree that the Genaway hit was a cheap shop. I have never disputed that. Please read my post before you respond i anger. I am just trying to contribute, but I guess another perspective is not allowed on this blog.
