In my opinion this is a bigger upset than the Holy Cross win at the Ralph over the Gophers. As a WCHA fan I am actually disappointed, I am trying to find the humor in it and I can't. How does a number one seed like not get up for this game? I watched the game the players weren't interested in playing. The last three winners of the MacNaughton Cup have each went 0-3 in the playoffs (WCHA and NCAA) that is a cumulative record 0-9 after winning their WCHA home series and moving on in the playoffs. Maybe WCHA should send that MacNaughton cup back to Houghton, Michigan and moth ball it, because there seems to be a curse in that cup.

ALBANY, N.Y. — Promising, no more. There is no tomorrow for the University of Denver hockey team.
After beginning and ending the regular-season ranked No. 1 nationally, the Pioneers folded their already damaged tent Friday at the NCAA Tournament East Regional.
Top-seeded DU came out flat and was eliminated by fourth-seeded Rochester Institute of Technology 2-1 at the Times Union Center.
The Tigers, who won their 11th consecutive game, scored 5:02 into the game and withstood several outstanding DU chances behind senior goalie Jared DeMichiel. With 7:24 remaining in regulation, RIT went ahead 2-0 with a power-play goal from leading scorer Cameron Burt.
Sophomore wing Joe Colborne finally solved DeMichiel with 5:25 to play, slapping in his own rebound for his team-leading 22nd goal of the season. It came on the power play and gave the Pioneers momentum, but they couldn't get another puck past DeMichiel in the final minute, when Cheverie was pulled for an extra attacker.
It was the third consecutive loss for DU, which hadn't lost two straight until last weekend's poor showing at the Western Collegiate Hockey Association playoff finals in St. Paul, Minn.
The Pioneers have now lost their NCAA Tournament opener for three consecutive years, including the latter two as a No. 1 regional seed

ReplyDeleteThe loss of Maiani(?) really hurt DU. Coupled with the fact that they really only had one good scoring line, DU was ripe for the picking. You have to roll at least 3 good lines to win hockey games, and the Sioux can roll 4.

Is this a bigger upset than Holy Cross? I don't know. It isn't lesser either.
I think it is equal to. The only thing that has me waffling is whether or not Minnesota was playing good coming into the regional. DU was not.
Gophs were #1; H.C. was #16....technically, HC was the bigger upset. The relevance was also heightened by the game being at the REA. Because I loath Denver so much, it would have been fantastic to have RIT beat DU at the REA also!
ReplyDeleteThe Gophers were not the overall #1 seed when they lost to HC, they were the overall #2 seed because Wisconsin was the #1 overall seed against Bemidji State. That occured because Bucky beat Goldy in the WCHA third place game at the Final Five.
ReplyDeleteTough loss for the Pioneers, big blow to the WCHA's hopes in that regional too. Denver had a solid season but obviously sucked at the end going 0-3. Big win for the Huksies in the West Regional though. The winless state in the NCAA tourney is no more and a good effort to see a rematch between Wisconsin and St Cloud at the Xcel Center once again tonight.
Forget about Chambers Goon; worry about your own predictions; i.e...there's no way RIT will beat Denver! Let's hear you say the same about UND/Yale. Afterall, you've been bashing Yale all year. This should be an easy one.
ReplyDeleteI love it when people come on to UND blogs and spout filth about how we say that at WCHA team will beat a nonconference opponent that doesn't come true.
ReplyDeleteLook at the facts coming into the prediction:
1. DU was #1 or #2 most of the season overall.
2. They DOMINATED nonconference.
3. RIT is a newcomer to the NCAAs and therefore is not a predictable entity to predict upon in a favorable manner.
4. RIT was SKUNKED this year nonconference (yesterday's game marks the first win in the nonconference schedule this year)
SO, tell me: Who would you have predicted would win the game? The #1 or #2 overall team or the team with the 25th ranked PWR score, autobid awarded newcomer? This isn't western bias. This isn't eastern bashing. It's simply looking at the teams involved and saying that, based upon what was observed, this team should win.
It didn't happen. Congrats to RIT. I suppose we should all bow down to the mighty...whatever they are.
Unheard in all of this was that SCSU is no longer a one and done. They're a two and done.
And I think UND has a great chance at beating Yale. Like RIT, UND was playing well coming into the NCAAs. Like DU, Yale was not.
Forget the predictions son...Yale 3 UND 0...2nd period...IT'S OVER!! It's a new era in college hockey...pull for your team, but shut your mouth until they win!!
