Buress supended for his hit on LaPoint.

I have to admit that I am a little surprised by this move and didn't expect the league to suspend Buress especially after they allowed a few other incidents to go unpunished, like say the Brian Schack incident and his impersonation of Todd Bertuzzi.

What I am hoping is the league has finally decided that enough is enough and is going to start flexing some of their muscle and suspending players who cross the line. During the series between the Sioux and the Mavericks Trevor Buress crossed the line a few times last weekend. I am also surprised that Geoff Irwin wasn't suspended for his stick swinging incident on Zajac at the end of Saturday's game. If that act had happened in the NHL Irwin would be getting a call from Colin Campbell.

Bruess Suspended One Game
CHN Staff Report
MANKATO, Minn. — Pursuant to WCHA policy, Minnesota State has suspended junior forward Trevor Bruess one game.

Bruess was suspended for a hit on North Dakota defenseman Derrick LaPoint. LaPoint went hard into the boards and suffered a broken leg. He had surgery this week and will miss the remainder of the season.

Bruess was not assessed a penalty on the play.

“We need Trevor to understand that he needs to make every possible effort to avoid these types of incidents and want to emphasize to him that he is responsible for his actions on the ice,” said WCHA commissioner Bruce McLeod. “We hope he will use this as both an educational experience and as a time to reflect on his play.

  1. I thought his hit on Friday night and Irwins slash on Saturday night were much more deserving of a suspension.

  2. One further thought, if this is the case, why aren't the officials being suspended for NOT enforcing the checking from behind rule on Saturday?

  3. I didn't think it was that bad. You see one or two of these every game, it was just unfortunate that Lapoint went in awkward into the boards.

I actually was waiting for penalty on Irwin for his two-handed baseball swing instead. hmmmm.....

  4. Interesting that they chose THIS hit (as it seemed clean...YOU even said so at the time!) and didn't do more about the non-call on the CFB the night before.

Now, I'm going to talk out both sides of my mouth. While I think it's ok for Bruess to be suspended due to his recent actions in general I think choosing this incident is stupid. I have a feeling it's a lingering thought of the WCHA from tDon still bitching about his hit on Tony Lucia.

Even more, this move makes it complete and total bullshit that Schack didn't get anything from the league. This hit was NOTHING like what Schack did and he got away with it. WTF is up with that?!? Makes me beyond pissed off.

Even on the DU player last weekend that got suspended. Again, another team that's not the Gophers and they get it. Be ready Goon, cuz you know your team is next.

Now, before some Gopher fan comes here and calls me a hater...keep in mind that up until last Mav/Gopher series I was a secondary Gopher fan, so don't even go there. That team has turned into a bunch of hacks.

Also, let's be clear here that I'm not defending Bruess. His actions lately have been out of control.

As for Irwin, I didn't see the slash but he pulled something similar in a different game and I was like "what the HELL was that?!? control your damn emotions!" so I'll believe what you say...and that too is not ok to be doing.

UND fans should quit whining about Bruess though. It was to your benefit to have him on the ice:( I'm pretty sure if you go to the Ralph's visiting penalty box you'll see his ass prints still on the bench.

  5. LetsGoMavs, why would you be a secondary Gopher fan when you could be a secondary Sioux fan? Let's face it, Grand Forks represents the state of Minnesota better than Minneapolis or St Paul combined.

  6. Oh silly Sioux fan, you're new to reading my stuff obviously! There is NO WAY IN HELL I would ever be a Sioux fan. I will cheer for every team in the WCHA before them. Well, right now I'm so disgusted with the UofM that I don't know that I could cheer for them. I guess if the Sioux and Goofs were playing I wouldn't cheer at all.

Really, now I'm a secondary SCSU fan. I guess I have been since the end of last season if I really think about it.

  7. Highway 2 and 35 Amy aka LGM has come a long way, I actually caught here having fun up in the Forks this past weekend. :)

As soon as Amy finds out we aren't all evil she will warm up to us.
:) As far as cheering for the Sioux I don't ever think it will happen. Thank god our team won I can't imagine how rough it would have been. :)

  9. Goon you are spot on with Schack incident. I'm affraid it is a little to late to give out a suspension since they didn't give it out right away. Lapoint is out the rest of the season, and maybe next season - who know with that kind of injury. Buress miss one game? It all happened so fast at the game, I couldn't tell if it was a penalty, so I could see how the refs would have missed it. Do you have a video on this hit?

Keep up the good work!!! I read you first everyday.

  11. Skippy,
Jumping someone from behind and pounding on him is not good and an act similar to Todd Bertuzzi pummeling Steve Moore.
