Is The News Media Piling On?

Read the Story at the GF Herald
GRAND FORKS, N.D. — Robbie Bina, whose strong return from a broken neck has prompted a lot of praise for his play and character, is facing a misdemeanor for allegedly trying to help two underage friends escape a police car during a bust at a local bar, according to reports. Those two underage friends just so happen to be star Sioux sophomores Jonathan Toews, 18, and T.J. Oshie. They were picked up last week for underage drinking. According to the prosecutor's office, Bina, 24, opened the door of a patrol car where two of them sat and then walked away. He will be charged with escaping custody, a Class B misdemeanor, which carries a maximum punishment of a $1,000 fine and 30 days in jail. Pettit said the six minors who were cited won't face further charges.North Dakota coach Dave Hakstol took command of the situation by asking the Grand Forks police chief to meet with the team Friday morning.

Media all too Giddy

Seriously I don’t have a problem with media reporting this story; I do believe its time for the media to move on and find something else to report on. However, I do have a quick question for the Herald Writers, who are all to quick to smear a Fighting Sioux hockey player; who are the other 4 under aged people that were sited at the bar along with the two UND hockey players? The other four students sited at Judy's Bar were: Brandon Horton, Latasha Schenfisch, Laci Ginder and Tara Fugleston. "

I believe the Local Drive- By- Media has made a mountain out of a molehill in this case, is really necessary to drag this out in the media all week? I suppose the Heraldo is has nothing else to report? College kids drink underage; it’s a fact of life. Another fact is not all of them get caught? But God forbid if one of these underage kids that get caught happens to be a fighting Sioux hockey player. Really this is not an earth-shattering story.

Like PCM said over on Sioux Sports How it is that on Tuesday, a half dozen police cars and sheriff's SUVs can descend on my neighborhood with lights flashing and sirens blaring, three people can be led away in handcuffs and not one single word about the incident appears in the local news media? Is the Judy's Tavern scandal consuming too many news-gathering resources?

PCM does have a point it seems that would be more serious than two kids getting busted for underage drinking, and a third letting them out of a squad car. Is this all we have to do in Grand Forks, ND? The non-story is who are the other kids involved in this earth shattering story? If they had been college athletes their name would have been dragged through the mud as well.

  1. How would you like to be the MSU guys? They get falsely accused of rape (turns out the girl was pissed because Austin Sutter didn't want to date her, but her friend instead) so she made that story up. Then it's splashed all over the news with HUGE articles and stuff...but when it was found to be untrue, there was a TINY blip in the local paper and the Star Trib. Typical...you know the news, always looking for the BIG eyecatching story.

That whole deal still haunts the team. Though they were cleared, the 2 underclassmen were still booted from the team and now the guys are on restriction with what they can do and say. Pathetic. Torks me off because it's JUTTS that has them on the short leash and is always barking at them about THEIR actions but look at him. UGG!!

  2. That seems unfair that the kids were cleared and then still get kicked off of the team, seems like they have grounds for a law suit.

  3. It sucks for them, but really wasn't much of a loss for us. Word has it they admitted to smoking pot, so they were booted. In reality, I think Jutts just wanted any guy listed in the paper off the team.

Are you ready for Mav/Sioux week?!? I'll try to get my hot or not up early, just for you!

  4. Are Mav fans still going to be calling for Juttings head after taking three points this weekend against MTU? Heck you guys are ahead of the BADgers now.

  5. They BETTER be calling for his head. He still sucks.

Winning ins't about him...but about the guys. They're the ones that never give up and keep going. Quite often, they score when they're NOT running the play the way Jutts wants.

That guy just needs to go. If his contract gets renewed, be ready for a MAJOR bitch fest from this girl!!

  6. Porr Jutting, never gets any love from the Mav's fan. Seems like Chris Likes him?

  7. Yeah, he does. I think Chris says good things about him, in fear that Jutts will read something and see if he says anything bad. He's trying to be a "quasi reporter" with his blog, so he's trying to not isolate himself from the team. I think some day he hopes to get interviews and ask questions and stuff like the Free Press guy does.

  8. Good advice to live by is don't bite the hand that feeds you. I guess if he has aspirations of being a sports writer I guess he wouldn't want to burn any bridges.

I don't know why anyone would want to write for a paper or do radio television. I couldn't take the pay cut for one.

  9. I don't know if he wants to write for a paper, or what the deal is. Sometimes the way he stands up for him is just pukey. It's like "pull your lips off Jutts' butt!"

Damn! I changed my e-mail address for USCHO so now I can't post until the account is activated again. ANNOYING! A whole Sunday of not being able to post on USCHO? Crap. I guess I should get my hot or not done today then:) I'm sure you're anxiously awaiting it!
