UND Men's Hockey Media Day

ST PAUL, MN - JUNE 25: 33rd overall pick Rocc...
Orginally Posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine.

Today, I attended the UND Hockey media luncheon and press event that followed. I was able to interview a few of the UND’s players today and get some great quotes.

There is a lot of energy and enthusiasm surrounding this season’s UND hockey team, based on who is returning from last season’s squad and with who is coming in this season.

Head coach Dave Hakstol was asked about his team’s goaltending situation.

“I expect it to be highly competitive,” Hakstol said.

“Clarke Saunders has the most experience under his belt he has played a lot of minutes at this level but I expect it to be a very competitive position for us and we’ll let that competition play out in different levels the first ten days will tell us something – but also, throughout the season there will be a high level of competition at that position.”

Coach Hakstol was asked about what position defenseman/forward Joe Gleason will play this season.
“He’s is going to be a defenseman,” Hakstol said. “I expect him to be a defenseman solely a defenseman and I expect him to be a guy that gives us real quality minutes back there.”

Here is what coach Hakstol had to say about second year freshman forward Rocco Grimaldi’s health.
“I think he is very close to approaching that level of being 100 percent healthy, Hakstol said. “I don’t think he is there yet – I think it’s something he is going to have to play his way into during the early part of the season to this point everything has been going well.”

I was able to get a chance to interview Clarke Saunders individually. Saunder is a  junior goalie; who transferred from University of Alabama Huntsville to North Dakota during the off-season.
I asked Saunders about his expectations coming into this season.

“My expectations are, obviously if I play; to play well,” Saunders said. “If not to be the best teammate that I can… obviously we have a pretty good team this year – whatever my role might be – to do the best as I can.”

Clarke Saunders was asked what he thought about Ralph Englestad Arena.

“It is absolutely beautiful,” Saunders said. “I almost have to pinch myself every time I walk in here. All of us are truly grateful to be a part of this program and the Ralph is a specular piece of a long historic program that UND has.”

I asked Saunders about his style of play – in other words – what kind of a goaltender is he.

“I am a butterfly goalie,” Saunders said. “I feel I am decently strong positionally but also I have a bit of athleticism as well.”

Saunders was asked about his fellow goaltenders Zane Gothberg and Tate Maris.

“Zane’s a great kid, he works really hard and pushes me every day and not to forget Tate as well he an awesome guy; an older guy like me, he [Maris] brings a lot of maturity to the room I really, really get along well with both of the goalie partners and I think we have a really good group some of the guys poke fun at how close we are so that complements how well we work together.”

Senior Forward Danny Kristo was asked about his decision to come back for his senior year.
“It was a long process, it was stressful there for a while… it was kind of a different process than some kids have had to go through,” Kristo said.

“Montreal where I got drafted was going through a different time – they fired their general manager during the midst of my decision – which made it a lot harder – with the thoughts of an NHL lockout; obviously I think I would rather be playing, if I could be playing AHL or playing college, I would much rather be playing college with my friends, which I still feel like with our coaching staff and with our team this year I can still get better in practice and get better in games. I can still do that stuff ultimately that is what your goal is year-by-year is to get better and if I can still do that here, I don’t see… why not come back for a great senior year and hopefully go on a run at the end of the season to put up a banner. “

Here is Danny Kristo’s comments on UND’s scoring depth this season.

“This year is going to be different that last year,” Kristo said. “Last year we had a lot of scoring on our first line but I think if you look at how deep we are this year we’re going to have three scoring lines that are going to be able to score night in and night out and a really solid fourth line that can grind it out down low, so it’s going to be different that last year I think.”

I asked Danny Kristo if he had some unfinished business coming into the season.

“Definitely a sour taste in my mouth,” Kristo Said. “ I definitely didn’t want my last college hockey game… to be a loss against Minnesota, so I think a little bit sour taste but I think that year is over with it’s a new year were just looking forward to start the season off right, starting the season off with the excitement a lot energy on the ice, we got a healthy line up compared to the end of last year, so I think that everyone is excited to get out there.

Danny Kristo had this to say about the prospects of having a full roster.

“I think we have more competition in the locker room,” Kristo said. “I think that might be a little bit of a challenge for our team – at the end of last year we didn’t have a choice – the guys that were healthy – were the guys that were playing, there’s going to be a good battle for guys – they’re going to be battling for spots. I think that practice is going to be more competitive, cause if you’re not working hard in practice someone is going to take your spot.”

Rocco Grimaldi was asked what he thought about Danny Kristo not signing with the Montreal Canadians and coming back for his senior season.

I was excited I wasn’t sure if he was going to come back or not. I was excited obviously he made a good choice … not sure what’s going on with the lockout and everything. I think he is happy about the decision and it should be a good year for him.

Rocco Grimaldi on whether he will be playing this weekend.

Yeah I will be playing this weekend, Grimaldi said. I am feeling a lot better and that’s a good thing.
Rocco Grimaldi was asked if he is a little rusty after missing most of last season with a knee injury.
“I hope not,” Grimaldi said. I got a little bit of the rust out in preseason here with the practices and everything but I am feeling a lot better just about my game in general and getting my smarts back so it will be good to test it [knee] out in a game and get another game under my belt.

Rocco Grimaldi was asked, if he is going to play wing or center.

“We will see,” Grimaldi said. “I am not sure, I am not sure where I will be playing this weekend. Will see, I can do either it doesn’t matter.”

UND women's hockey; ready to make an impact nationally

United States forward Jocelyne Lamoureux in a ...

Today, I attended the UND Hockey media luncheon and press event that followed and I was able to interview a few of the UND Women’s hockey players today.

Here is what the Lamoureux twins Monique and Jocelyne had to say about the upcoming season.

I did learn a valuable lesson today, if you don’t turn your recorder on you end up interviewing the same player twice. I am also grateful, that Monique Lamoureux is a patient person.

I asked UND Senior forward/defenseman Monique Lamoureux about her expectations for the upcoming season.

“The ultimate goal is to put a national championship banner up in our rink,” Monique said.

“Jocelyne [Lamoureux] and I were looking it up earlier and I think today is the first official day of practice… the tradition here goes really deep with our family and I think that our brothers and our dad have been a part of 10 championships, whether it’s a McNaughton cup, a WCHA Final Five, or a national championship. For us it’s something that we really want to add to our family. We want to start a tradition on the woman’s side.”

On being the last of the Lamoureux’s to go through the UND hockey program.

“It’s bitter sweet being the last ones not having a brother here after having one playing on the team for the last eight years,” Monique said.  “It’s little weird not seeing your brothers around the rink as much but we’re excited for this year and we’re hoping to accomplish some great things.”

I asked UND Senior forward Jocelyne Lamoureux about her expectations for the upcoming season.

“Just want to make history for this program and the ultimate goal is obviously to win a national championship as is with every other team in the NCAA but that’s the goal this year more than any other year since I’ve been here,” Jocelyne said.

“I think we have the potential to do it; it’s just a matter of putting the pieces of the puzzle together.”

Jocelyne was asked about being the last two of Lamoureux’s to go through the UND Hockey program.

“Yeah it’s bitter sweet and we have some emotional moments,” Jocelyne said.

“Our brother took off last week for the east coast just knowing we’re the last ones here we’re the last ones to try and add to the tradition for our program and for our family and to have the opportunity this year again and we’re excited and we want to make the most of it. Just keep adding and staring a new tradition with the woman’s program.”

One Last time, NDSU makes their case for their athletes

I know this isn't hockey related but it's kind of a big deal to the people of North Dakota. I am also going to get back to covering UND hockey starting tomorrow when I go to the Hockey media luncheon, that I promise you.

This evening, NDSU head football coach Craig Bohl, Athletic Director Gene Taylor and University President Dean Bresciani addressed the Fargo media on why the North Dakota State University didn't suspend nine of the 10 players that plead guilty to violating North Dakota election laws. In other words, only one player is going to get suspended for basically screwing up a petition drive that Ducks Unlimited was going to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on promoting.

So, whether those in Fargo to include fans of the Bison Nation want to acknowledge this or not – this this kind of a big deal – these football players attempted to selfishly circumvented the election process – these guys attempted to defraud the state of North Dakota for personal gain. That is a serious deal – I don’t buy this crap about the players not really understanding what they did – that is absolute balderdash. These are adults and their actions have consequences and playing football for North Dakota State University is a privilege not a right – the Bison players in this case are also not the victims some have made them out to be.

If the NDSU coaching staff had just decided to suspend the players involved in this crime during the RMU game, this would have been over and it would have ended all of the speculation that has taken place since with each passing day.

NDSU Football again puts winning in front of doing the right thing

The NDSU Bison Football team proved once again that winning is more important than doing the right thing. Checking the newspapers today we find out that 10 Bison football players had their day in court today and once again the head football coach goes on record to say that none his players will miss any games. Marvelous!
FARGO, N.D. (AP) — Ten North Dakota State University football players pleaded guilty Tuesday to misdemeanor election fraud and were sentenced to community service for faking signatures on proposed ballot measure petitions that they were hired to collect.

Among the players on the nation's top-ranked Football Championship Subdivision team who pleaded guilty Tuesday were starters Samuel Ojuri, Joshua Colville, Marcus Williams and Brendin Pierre. Players Lucas Albers, Aireal Boyd, Demitrius Gray Bryan Shepherd, Antonio Rogers, and Charles Smith III also pleaded guilty.

Each of the players was ordered to serve 360 days of unsupervised probation, complete 50 hours of community service and pay $325 in fees. All of the sentences were deferred, meaning the crime will be expunged from a player's record if he completes the conditions of his sentence.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed to the sentences for eight of the 10 players. The state had recommended 1-year suspended sentences for Ojuri and Williams because of prior misdemeanors.

The players declined to comment after the hearing. Quick deferred questions to NDSU.

Bison head coach Craig Bohl has said the team might discipline the players but won't suspend them. The school said he planned to issue a statement later Tuesday.
I have talked to quite a few UND fans that think the way that NDSU is handling this situation is a joke – we have players at UND getting suspended for Minor in Consumption which is a class B misdemeanor and then at NDSU we have football players pleading guilty to class A misdemeanors and they aren’t getting suspended. I think this send a poor message to the fans and especially to the young kids that look up to them. In fact, the NDSU Athletic Director Gene Taylor and the head football coach Craig Bohl are running deflections for their players.

Updated College Hockey Television Schedule

CBS Sports I.D. From 1990

Orginally posted at the Hockey Writers - Combine

One of the themes I have been hitting on this fall is – College Hockey can fill the void left by the NHL Lockout – there is a very good chance that there will not be any NHL Hockey this season.

From every thing that I have read - it doesn't appear that the two sides aren't very close to solving their differences nor do they seem to be in any hurry to settle the labor dispute.

Keep hope alive - the two sides are meeting but that's about it.

From the average fans perspective, it doesn't appear that the two sides are making very much progress.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, the NHL is close to announcing that they're going to cancel some regular season games on the schedule - that announcement could come in the very  near future.

I have posted television schedules for college hockey in couple of previous posts and today I got my hands on the updated national television college hockey schedule. If my math is correct, there are going to be over 125 college hockey games to choose from this season.

Starting this Saturday, you will be able to watch a Division I college hockey exhibition game between the University of North Dakota and University of Manitoba Bison on Fox College Sports.

You can check your local listing but FCS is on the following DirecTV channels 617, 623, 626. As of right now, Dish Network does not include Fox College Sports. Games with a (C) are also available in Canada.

UND 4th in first USCHO Poll

The first USCHO Poll is out and the Boston College Eagles are the number one pick. I know that some Gopher fans will be upset with the slight but according to Todd Milewski of USCHO, only one team since the 1997-98 season the Minnesota Golden Gophers in 2002-03 has went on to win an NCAA title. So being the number one team in the first USCHO poll of the preseason really doesn't matter all that much.

Sports Net; Suter and Parise among Top 5 NHLers not losing money over lockout

ST PAUL, MN - JULY 9: Chuck Fletcher, general ...
ST PAUL, MN - JULY 9: Chuck Fletcher, general manager of the Minnesota Wild looks on as Ryan Suter #20 and Zach Parise #11 speak during a press conference on July 9, 2012 at Xcel Energy Center in St Paul, Minnesota. (Image credit: Getty Images via @daylife)
If there is one thing that we have learned during the 2012-13 NHL Lockout that we don't need to feel sorry for former Wisconsin Badger Ryan Sutter and North Dakota Fighting Sioux forward Zach Parise.

While other NHL players aren't getting a salary during the NHL lockout Sutter and Parise will be getting paid their 10 million dollar signing bonuses.
Patrick Hoffman; Sportsnet --- Ryan Suter, D, Minnesota Wild: $2 million

Much like Weber, his former defensive partner with the Nashville Predators, defenceman Ryan Suter had quite the interesting and rewarding off-season.

On the first day of free agency, Suter was signed to a 13-year deal worth $98 million by the Minnesota Wild. It was one of the most lucrative deals in Wild history, and one that must pay off if the team wants to become a postseason contender.

Suter is due to make $12 million total this season, which includes a signing bonus of $10 million. Therefore, should the NHL season be lost for the year, Suter will only lose $2 million of his salary.

Zach Parise, LW, Minnesota Wild: $2 million

The other most lucrative deal that the Minnesota Wild signed this off-season was to left winger Zach Parise.

Like Suter, Parise was also signed to a 13-year deal worth $98 million. The Wild, not known for their offensive prowess, now have someone who can produce on a consistent basis and a player that wields a ton of speed, a nose for the net, soft hands and the ability to create plays.

In an identical windfall to Suter, Parise is due to make $12 million this season with a signing bonus of $10 million. Like Suter, Parise will only lose $2 million if the lockout extends.
Just for the record I don't fault either player because they signed what they were offered during the off-season. I also think it's a bit of irony that the NHL owners while claiming to be hurting - there is at least one NHL owner that is going to have to pay 20 million dollars in player bonuses while the league is locked out.

Where are they now - Justin Moody

Recently, I interviewed former Grand Forks Central forward Justin Moody. Justin plays in NAHL for the Brooking’s Blizzard. Justin is currently second on the Brookings Blizzard with (2g-4a—6tps).

Goon: Have you had any schools contract you? If so which ones?

Justin Moody: After the showcase a lot of D3 Colleges and nothing serious D1 yet.

Goon: What line are you projected to play on this season?

Justin Moody: I have been on first line as a right winger so far and playing a lot of power play and penalty kill.

Goon: Any Familiar teammates on the Blizzard that people from Grand Forks, ND might recognize?

Justin Moody: Yeah, Casey Purpur from Grand Forks, Derek Sand from West Fargo, and Eric Brenk from Moorhead from around that area.

Goon: Tell us about your play last season? Last season you were 6th on the Blizzard in scoring, you played in 59 games scoring (13g-20a—33pts). Would you call that a breakout season for you?

Justin Moody: I was happy with how I played last season. I was more of a role playing forward. I was an energy guy. Our penalty kill was top 3 in the league all year and I was usually on the first penalty kill unit. Hopefully last year set me up for an even better year this year.

Goon: So tell us about your first fight in Junior Hockey? Do you drop the gloves on a regular basis?

Justin Moody: My first fight was my rookie year up in Canada playing in the MJHL for the Selkirk Steelers. It was over quick and I didn't get hit at all and my fist was sore but I really don't remember what happened to be honest. I wouldn't say a regular basis at all maybe once or twice a year.

Sunday Evening Humor and CBA discussions.

My wife put this picture on my Facebook page so I thought I would post it because I thought it was kind of funny. I believe that everyone needs a little humor in their lives - especially for hockey fans with the prospects of the hockey lockout causing the loss of an entire season. As this this work stoppage drags out, It looks like there is a very good chance that we're not going to have an NHL hockey season this winter - I don't see how this lockout ends very quickly.

Watch the video's below, it appears that the NHL Owners and the NHLPA are in no hurry settle this work stoppage.

Think about this, the NHL has locked out the NHL players and instead of working out their major differences - these two sides are talking about player safety. While I think that player safety is an important issue there isn't going to be any hockey until they work out the percentage of the Hockey Related Revenue that the players and the owners share... Right now it's 57-43 in favor of the players. It appears that the Owners want a 50/50 split.

If you watch the video you don't hear any urgency in Billy Daly's  voice - it's like the NHLPA and the NHL owners are saying, yeah well... We met this weekend and talked about a few issues and it's good that we're talking - were not making very much progress... I think that hockey fans want to see some negotiations that are focused on ending this lockout and going forward so we can have an NHL season.

Friday Links and College Hockey to take center stage.

Seawolf
Seawolf (Photo credit: Travis S.)
The dog days of summer are finally over and for UND Hockey fans the season couldn't come fast enough - especially with all of the news that has happened off of the ice, during the preseason.

Once UND gets past the team imposed suspensions and the self created adversity - UND should end up having a pretty good season based on the personnel that UND has coming back and the new recruits coming in.

With a sigh of relief, the exhibition season will finally begin a week from this Saturday as the UND Fighting Sioux Hockey team will take on the Manitoba Bison at 7:05 pm on the 6th of October at Ralph Englestad Arena.

Ironically, the UND Hockey team was suppose to see former UND forward Taylor Dicken who was reported to have transferred to the home town Manitoba Bison - looking at the Manitoba roster I was unable to find Dicken's name.

UAA Seawolves might need a temporary home away from home

If there ever was a case for UAA Seawolves to get a their own arena on their campus - that time is right now - the Seawolves have some arena issues right now that might not get solved before the Seawolves play their first home game.

I also think that it's time that UAA athletic department look into the possibility that they might need to get a new on campus arena for the Seawolves. The Seawolves share an arena with the Alaska Aces of the ECHL... UAA is going to get a new 109 million dollar basketball arena on their campus, but the new building will not have an ice surface for hockey. This also doesn't sit well with Seawolves fans either.

Its the opinion of some UAA fans that I have chatted with, that the UAA Athletic Department isn't as committed to UAA hockey as the University should be and UAA Seawolves fans aren't real happy with the UAA Athletic Director Steve Cobb.

According to Doyle Woody of the Anchorage Daily News the Seawolves might not have their arena to play in when the season begins. Chris Dilks of the new revamped SBN, does a pretty good job of breaking down the options that the Seawolves have if their arena isn't fixed in time for their first home game.
Chris Dilks, Western College Hockey --- Anchorage athletic director Steve Cobb has begun making preparations in case the repairs can't be made in time, or in case the repairs don't hold through the season. The Seawolves' practice facility, the 750-person capacity Wells Fargo Sports Complex, is being given a press box, and being set-up to accommodate television broadcasts and video review.

With it being Alaska, there aren't many other viable options if ice can't be made at Sullivan Arena. The Menard Center in Wasilla, roughly 45 minutes from campus, can seat 1500 people. The Kenai River Brown Bears' home in Soldotna can seat 2000, but at nearly three hours drive away, it's likely not much of an option. There aren't any other arenas in the area with a capacity over 1000 people.

A new on-campus arena has been discussed for Alaska-Anchorage for a few years now. Perhaps these issues at Sullivan Arena could help add some momentum to the project.
President Barack Obama and GOP presidential nominee Mitt Romney are kicking the Denver Pioneers out of their own hockey arena so the two candidates can have their first presidential debate.

Yesterday, Brad Elliot Schlossman beat writer for the Grand Forks Herald released his preseason UND hockey preview - that preview is now available for all to read on line. Good stuff there. [Click to view]

Former Central Knight's and Future UND defenseman Paul LaDue was named the assistant captain for the Lincoln Stars.

UND's now infamous hockey part actually made The Hockey News as well - you can read the story by clicking on this link to a story that Ryan Kennedy wrote.

UND third in CHN's Preseason Top 10

Joesph Edwards of the the College Hockey News has post his national top ten and this is how it shakes out.

1. MINNESOTA (28-14-1, 20-8-0 WCHA)
2. BOSTON COLLEGE (33-10-1, 19-7-1 HOCKEY EAST)
3. NORTH DAKOTA (26-13-3, 16-11-1 WCHA)
4. UNION (26-8-7, 14-4-4 ECAC)
5. MICHIGAN (24-13-4, 15-9-4-1 CCHA)
6. DENVER (25-14-4, 16-8-4 WCHA)
7. MASSACHUSETTS-LOWELL (24-13-1, 19-9-1 HOCKEY EAST)
8. CORNELL (19-9-7, 12-4-6 ECAC)
9. WESTERN MICHIGAN (21-14-6, 14-10-4-4 CCHA)
10. NOTRE DAME (19-18-3, 12-13-3 CCHA)

Here is what CHN had to say about UND.

Dave Hakstol got the most out of an injury-depleted, undermanned roster last season, taking them all the way to the West Regional Final. North Dakota faces some early-season self-imposed adversity this time around with the suspension of numerous players, but are otherwise healthy, and should be ready to go as soon as that gets sorted out. North Dakota has replaced goalies Brad Eidness and Aaron Dell with highly-touted freshman Zane Gothberg and Huntsville transfer Clarke Saunders, who should perform admirably behind possibly the strongest defensive unit in all of college hockey, Seniors Andrew MacWilliam and Joe Gleason will be the anchors, along with juniors Derek Forbort and Dillon Simpson. Up front, the senior duo of Corban Knight and Danny Kristo are well-known scorers, while classmate Carter Rowney is looking forward to building on his breakout junior season. Losing Brock Nelson leaves a big hole, but getting Rocco Grimaldi back after losing most of his first season to injury (he got a medical redshirt and retains four years of eligibility) will help fill the game.
