UNO's Ryan Walters predicts UNO Sweep against UND this weekend.

Someone quick post this on the North Dakota hockey team's bulletin board in the locker room. I am sure that Blaiser is going to be happy that one of his players is posting this stuff on social media as well. Don't worry, I have a screen shot as well, so it will be there for all eternity.

Looking ahead to the Olympics

Post by Shane Jenkins

Even though every single nation feels as though they have a chance to win the gold medal at the Sochi Olympics in hockey, most experts believe it will come down to the top three. Russia, Canada and The United States all have the depth and star power to make a deep run in the beginning of February. Most of their players will be taking a break from their fantasy hockey production in the NHL to represent their country. So how do the top three squads stack up against each other?

Host Russia had a disappointing 2010 Olympics in Canada. They will be hoping to reverse their fortunes now that they are getting the play on their home soil. They have perhaps the best individual talent in the world in Alex Ovechkin, but they also have some key players at other positions as well. If they can put up quite a few goals to give their defense a cushion, the home team could pull off the victory.

Defending champion Canada figures to be a very formidable opponent for any team that goes up against them. Not only do they have some of the best fantasy hockey players in the NHL, but they have plenty of depth as well. When you have all starts coming off your bench, you know that your team is deep overall. Just like Russia, they are also stacked with forwards who should be able to score quite often. Their defense is a little stronger, as Roberto Luongo will be asked to man the net in most of the important games.

Finally, the United States put up a valiant effort in 2010 only to come up short against Canada. They are considered to be the 3rd best team coming into the Olympics, but when playing well they can compete with anyone. Their goalie situation is a little bit up in air right now, but it appears as though Ryan Miller and Jonathan Quick will share the duties. They will also need some big play from their best goal scorer Patrick Kane.

USA Hockey: Are we forgetting someone.

It would appear that leaving Bobby Ryan off of the Olympic hockey team might be a huge mistake.

Then there were two... Sweden vs. Finland

We're down to two teams... Sweden and Finland will play for the Gold Medal in the World Juniors Hockey Championship. I have to admit, that I am not going to feel all that sad for our neighbors to the north.

Why am I not cheering for Canada anymore? I just can't forget how their fans cheer against the USA when they're playing in International competition.  Especially after their fans starting cheering for team Russia during the 2006 World Junior Hockey Championship. After that, I pretty much decided that I will cheer for the Swedes or whoever, plays Canada in hockey. Now lets be clear, I am not anti-Canadian at all. I am just not going to cheer for them in the World Junior Hockey Championship or Olympics hockey anymore.

Also, some of the clueless comments that were posted at one of  my videos, that I uploaded to Youtube, only reinforce the reason why. This is what some clown put on one of the videos that I had uploaded. I wonder where Bob Scott is today? I wonder if he's crying in his beer and if he's going to cheer for the Finns or the Swedes?

Bob Scott said, "Congrats to Russia for eliminating the United States Junior Hockey Club... The USA show their classless colors yet again! Good riddance USA! No wonder the rest of the world despises you! NO CLASS!!! World Junior Hockey Tournament 2014."
Mind you, this is the same country that if Canada was attacked, the USA would be there to defend her.

It's pretty evident that the Swedes are the class of the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championship. Thank God, the Swedes beat the Russians in the other semi-final game today as well. If the USA can't win the WJHC I am cool with the Swedes or Finns winning it all.

WJHC: Fly-by ends poorly for Russia's Pavel Buchnevich

This is the very reason that I would like the see the fly-by the benches curtailed. There was no reason for the Russian forward Pavel Buchnevich to skate by the American bench taunting the USA players like that. Obviously, Buchnevich would get his just deserts with the stick to upper body. Karma, maybe... I took a little bit of heat for the aricle, I also had some youth hockey coaches that were in agreement with me as well. This was the kind of stuff that I was talking about. I didn't get it in the video but Dave Starman said, "Act like you've been there before."

WJHC: Speaking of No Class, Russian Bench Taunts USA

(GIF via ) We had an old saying in football, you win with class and you lose with class. Nice hand gesture for an adult male. None-the-less, the USA's WJC run is over in 2014, after a 5-3 loss against the Russians.

USA WJC Hockey: Kerdiles checked from behind Sulak

USA forward Nic Kerdiles checked from behind by Czech Republic Defenseman Libor Sulak during game one of the 2014 IIHF WJC. There was no call on the play. After watching the video of the hit a few times, I am not really upset with the no-call in this instance.

Womens Hockey: USA beats Canada at the Ralph

Grand Forks ND – Tonight felt a reunion; twin sisters Jocelyn and Monique Lamoureux played their collegiate hockey at Ralph Engelstad Arena, which sits on the campus of the University of North Dakota.

Actually, it was like they never left.

Before the game, there was a presentation on the big screen honoring the twins and the time they spent at UND. It’s been an emotional week for the Lamoureux’s. Their brother Jacques Lamoureux is in the U.S. Air Force, and he’d just returned from Kuwait.

“Especially to have Jacques home, he just got home from Kuwait, that was really special,” Jocelyne Lamoureux said. “We’re a really close family. So, having him for that – my grandma and my parents – it was pretty cool. This place is home for Monique and I, this community means a lot to us. To share this with our family, was nice.”

Tonight, 5,559 fans came to watch the USA and Canada play in a pre-Olympic match-up. The environment in the arena was awesome, it was electric, at times the noise level was almost deafening.
“I was shocked by how loud the building was, really,” U.S. Women’s National Team head coach
Katey Stone said. “At one point it was going through me. I kept feeling like the thunder was going through me, too. What an environment for these kids to play in, leading up to Sochi.”

The teams traded goals in the first period, before team USA blew open the game in the second period scoring three goals. Team USA’s fore-check was relentless and Canada had no answer for it.

Pacing team USA, was the third line of Monique Lamoureux (1g-1a—2pts), Megan Duggan (0g-2a—2pts) and Jocelyne Lamoureux (1g-1a—2pts). That line was nothing short of amazing racking up a combined six points. The twins would also finish the game with the Gordy Howe hat-trick.

USA Team captain Megan Duggan was asked what it was like to be paired with the Lamoureux twins.

“They’re dynamic players,” Duggan said. “They make things happen. They’re smart with the puck, and I enjoy it.”

Five players from each team would be assessed five-minute majors for fighting, after a scrum broke out in front of the American net with nine seconds remaining in the game.  Team USA’s head coach didn’t seem all that thrilled with the Canadian’s tactics at the end of the game.

“I am not a proponent of fighting in hockey,” Katey Stone said. “I am proponent of standing up for yourself. If players are going to take cheap shots at our players, there’s going to be answer for that. We will not get pushed around. At the end of the day, we’ll prepare to play any game that we have to play. We’ll go hard, we’ll go clean, if the game gets out of hand, we’ll manage that as well.”

This is what some of the players had to say about the scrum at the end of the game.

“That player (Brianne Jenner) that hit (Josephine) Pucci took her out for a season, two seasons ago,” Monique Lamoureux said. “She took a head shot at her, so were going to stick up for our teammates and were going to protect them. I think Jocelyn obviously body-checked her, but I think it was clean. If you’re going to take a head shot at one of our players there’s consequences for it. Look what happened to me in Burlington (Vermont).”

“You have to protect your own players and you have to protect your own house,” USA forward Brianna Decker said.

Team USA and Canada will play again in St. Paul, Minnesota on December 28, 2013 at the Xcel Energy Center.

Stats of note

USA has now won the last two games in the series, after losing three in a row.
USA outshot team Canada 31-18
Both teams were 0-3 on the power play.

Monique Lamoureux smacks a Canadian player in the goalmouth... For every action there's a reaction. You can see that Brianne Jenner elbows USA’s Josephine Pucci. There's a history here.

Anti-fighting Cabal to Ban Fighting in US Junior Hockey

Shirt badge/Association crest
Shirt badge/Association crest (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
The anti-fighting cabal is pretty strong in hockey across the USA. I am concerned. This is going to bring the level of violence up in amateur hockey. People always talk about fighting in hockey but they never address the dangerous hits like hits from behind, head shots, boarding’s and the blatant charges. These are the hits were the concussions are coming from. These are the hits that I am concerned about more than a hockey fight.
Jeff Z. Klein, New York Times -- Junior A hockey, for 16- to 20-year-olds, is the last remaining level of the game under USA Hockey’s jurisdiction that still tolerates fighting. The push to outlaw fighting is being spurred by a recent spate of serious injuries resulting from fights and concern over the prospect of lawsuits.

“We need to take a firm stand to preserve our sport, prevent catastrophic injury and avoid financial repercussions,” said Dr. Michael J. Stuart, the chief medical officer for USA Hockey, who has been a leader in the effort to ban fighting.

The new rule would punish all fighters with automatic ejection from the game, and instigators with an automatic two-game suspension. It would also give referees more latitude in making decisions to eject players.

The measure will be presented at the organization’s winter meetings Jan. 16-19 in Orlando, Fla. It could be voted on then or at USA Hockey’s annual congress in June. The rule could take effect as early as next season.

2014 WJC TV Schedule

This year you will again be able to watch the 2014 WJC on NHL Network... Also, there's some very good news as well. Dave Starman of CBSSN will be in the booth with Steve Mears, co-host of NHL Network’s NHL Live. The games will start the day after Christmas and continue till January 5, 2014. This season, no one from UND's hockey team is on the USA WJC team or the Canadian WJC team for that matter.
