(Video) UND 4 DU 2

UND took DU to the proverbial woodshed last night, and dominated DU. In my opinion, it wasn't even close. UND head coach Dave Hakstol talks about playing on their toes.  UND was on their toes all-game long and had DU on their heels for most of the night.  This was the best effort that I have seen from UND this season, bar none. Also, we have to give have to give UND goalie Clarke Saunders credit, he was simply amazing stopping 29-of-31 shots and the defenders in front of him were very good when they had to be. UND game into the game going 1-for-18 on the power play went 2-4 tonight. In the last 12 games against DU, UND is 9-3-1.

UND Hockey: Is there an outdoor game on the horizon?

This tweet hit Twitter yesterday. It's a great idea. It would be fun to have an outdoor hockey game between UND and UMN. Honestly, outdoor games are for the most part a nice spectacle, to be enjoyed by hockey fans. The Winter Classic was a decent game to watch yesterday.

Some fans think they’re a gimmick. I am on the fence with these things. Seriously, how many of these things are we going to have? I think this year we have hit the over saturation point. What do we have, like 20+ outdoor games this year? At last count, there were something like 23 of them. I might have missed a couple.

Let's not jump off the Sorlie Bridge yet... UND hockey

Sorlie Bridge connecting Grand Forks, ND to Ea...

Site information: Yesterday I tried to install the Disqus commenting system and I couldn’t get it to work. I am going to take another crack at installing the Disqus commenting system when I get a chance. If anyone is good at HTML code and wants to help me, let me known and I will buy you a couple of beers.

I also deleted my Intensedebate comments system. So I don’t have a real commenting system right now. You can comment on the blog if you have a Goggle + Account. Which is the wave of the future, or so I have been told. I am also in the process of redesigning my blog; I have no Idea where I want to go with it.

Last night’s game.

First off, I don’t see any reason to jump off the Sorlie Bridge (pick your bride, Sorlie, Kennedy, Columbia, Point). Not yet, but if want to jump ship, make sure to cut a hole in the ice so you don’t break your neck. I am not ready to give up on this team.

Rocco Grimaldi seems to think that the boys can right the ship.

Contrary to what some say, I think that there’s talent on the UND hockey team. Let's take a deep breath. I think that the goaltending has been questionable, but that will come. I thought Clarke Saunders was left out to dry last night. One the on goal, I thought that he was caught cheating as well.  I think that Zane Gothberg has had concentration issues and needs to focus.

I find do it comical that some fans are panicking already. We have seen this drill before. There’s a lot of season left. In nine plus seasons that Dave Hakstol’s has been the head coach, his teams, have been second half teams. Only exceptions, were the 2010-11 (Frozen Four team) and the 2012-13 season (Lost in the West Region to Yale).

This is a young team. It’s not an excuse. Last week during the Wednesday hockey press conference Dave Hakstol said, “This is a young team.” I was actually shocked that he said it. Hakstol wasn’t offering up an excuse, just stating a fact. I see no panic in the man’s body language. Although, the head coach didn’t look happy very happy either.

I know it’s cliché, but there’s a lot of season left. Sure, UND hasn’t looked very good so far this season. But, let’s examine reality. UND has 11 healthy forwards skating right now. That’s not an excuse, that’s brutal reality.

I have said this before and I will say it again. You don't hang Banners for winning in the early season. There’s no award given for the best record in October, November, December and January.

From the UND game notes: UND head coach Dave Hakstol, now in his 10th season behind the bench of his alma mater, is the only active head coach in Division I men’s hockey who has recorded a winning record in every season as a head coach. That includes Jerry York.

Last night’s game

I thought the guys took some undisciplined penalties at key times during last night’s game. That has to stop if they’re going to be successful this season.

From my perspective, from my seat on the couch last night, I thought the officials called some horrible ticky-tacky penalties last night. When I went back and looked at the play on my DVR, I thought where was the penalty on that call?  I don’t like the way that Hockey East officials call their games. I think that ECAC officials calls the game much like they do in the West.

Brutal!

In my opinion, I felt that the refs let the Terriers get away with a lot of things that could have been called penalties both ways. That's how I saw it. I will be doing some video work this week. Let's also give credit, where credit is due. I thought BU played a pretty good hockey game, too.

This is what head coach Dave Hakstol had to say about last night’s game. It is what it is. There’s no sugar coating it with Dave Hakstol, he call it like he see it. I don’t see him making any excuses.

“I thought BU played well tonight,” Dave Hakstol said.  “They capitalized on opportunities, did a good job on the power play.”

This is what the head coach had say on UND’s penalty trouble and trying to fight back after falling behind.

“I thought we had a real good first seven, eight minutes of the game. We spent last half of the period killing penalties.” “Had a two goal deficit, that’s hard to overcome on the road.”

“BU did a good job defending,” Hakstol said. “We had to attempt to kill five penalties in a row.

The head coach was asked about the team’s injuries.

“We had 20 guys dressed,” Hakstol said. That’s not an issue what-so-ever that’s not a topic in our locker room.

A couple of stats

During the 2011-12 season, UND started the season 4-7-1.

Live thoughts from Omaha (RW77)

Hello everyone from the land of Corn.

Goon asked me to give my thoughts on the weekend since I went to both games and live in the great city of Omaha, NE.  What I saw was a mixed bag, but I assure you (since the haters are out in force) that what I'm about to relate is PURELY my opinion and my opinion alone.

The Venue and Atmosphere

If you live in Omaha, you get to see two venues for hockey:  CenturyLink for Mavs hockey and the Ralston Arena for Lancers (USHL) hockey.  CenturyLink is older than Ralston Arena.  CenturyLink is a better environment to watch hockey.  Sure, Ralston is newer and gets you closer to the ice.  One can argue that there really is no bad seat in the Ralston Arena.  But go to a Lancers game and you have an arena full of cow bells and vuvuzelas and NO ONE who has them knows when to silence them!  Not so at the CenturyLink.  I enjoy my time at the CenturyLink Center.  Great atmosphere and fun to watch hockey when you don't have endless noise flowing into your ear.

It seemed more crowded Saturday than Sunday.  Unfortunately, those who didn't come on Sunday missed a far better game (even if I say that knowing UND won).

The Goaltending

I have honestly NO IDEA what got into Gothberg Saturday.  No idea at all.  He was BRUTAL.  He reminded me of his first game as a freshman.  BIG rebound cost him the first goal and the other two was so fundamentally poor hockey play that I was honestly stunned Hakstol didn't pull him.  The second goal itself was one that I think even I could have stopped (and let me tell you, if I can make even ONE save facing DI players, that'd be a miracle!)!  The second one was simply a loss of focus.

Saunders tonight was far better and he had to be.  Why?  Because, in my opinion, UND played far more careless hockey Sunday than they did Saturday.  In the end, Saunders played VERY well and will certainly garner more playing time going forward.  I just wish I knew what the Sam Houston State was going on with Gothberg (and I know what the haters will say.  Too bad I don't care).

Massa for UNO was VERY solid and I'm surprised he didn't play on Sunday.  It turns out it was bad karma because UNO's starter, Thompson, caught the Gothberg bug and gave up two horrific goals (though to be fair the second goal he gave up was simply his defense abandoning him).

Game Play

On Saturday, we looked flat, imo.  We looked especially bad in the first period.  I thought we looked slow, behind the play.  Goon disagrees with me when I say that UNO was clearly the better team and was very solid at even strength.  I truly don't believe Massa was challenged that much.  To my recollection, Massa had to make two great saves and the rest of the night was largely unchallenged.

Let's face it:  I noticed a LOT more defensemen leading the rush on Saturday than on Sunday and ANY time you have a Dman leading the rush into the offensive zone that, to me, speaks VOLUMES about where we are at with our attack.

As for our power play, it still sucks.  IIRC, we only scored 1 goal on the powerplay all weekend.

Our Penalty Kill?  Both of UNO's goals on Sunday came on the Power Play.  Neither goals were weak as far as Saunders is concerned.  The first was where we gave them the center of the ice below the faceoff circles and the second was where we forgot about a man (Archibald) and gave him the center ice below the faceoff circles.  Imagine that.  They scored on both times.

Sunday was a FAR more entertaining game.  UND had to kill off 1:45 of a 5 on 3 PowerPlay after Grimaldi took a stupid penalty... I'd argue that Panzarella's penalty was also stupid.  It also had what had to be the most tense final 2 minutes of the game I've witnessed in quite some time.

The Officiating

I always get a different opinion of the officiating when I view it live at the arena rather than on TV or webcast.  I didn't think the officials were that bad.  I'm a bit baffled as to why UNO came away with a powerplay with 1:10 left in Sunday's game.  Pattyn and UNO #13 clearly deserved penalties.  So did UND's second of the altercation.  But I thought the other UNO participant should've gone as well.

Players that stood out or I thought would stand out:

Archibald (UNO):  I think he was one of the best players for UNO on Sunday.  I'm still a bit confused as to why he wasn't ejected on Saturday though.  He had a ton of energy and he reminded me at times of Mike Prpich.

Grimaldi (UND):  Boy, UNO fans don't like him.  UNO was trying to run him all game long on Sunday and Brady (UNO) nearly took himself off the ice with an injury because of it.  In the end, Grimaldi ended up being a sort of agitator... a role I didn't know Grimaldi was supposed to serve with UND.

Walters (UNO):  Ok, he factored in on one of the goals on Sunday but I didn't notice him much at all this weekend.

The MacMillans (UND):  Neither stood out to me.... at all.

Caggiula (UND):  I liked the way he played.  Drake and Rodwell impressed me with their aptness to crash the net.

Ladue (UND):  I'll always be a fan of Dmen that aren't afraid to shoot the puck, especially on the PowerPlay.  It started with Nick Fuher and it continues with Paul LaDue.  I LOVE IT when he shoots the puck.

Overall impressions of the Sioux:

We have a ways to go.  With the NCHC being like it is, though, I'm not sure how it is going to work out.  I'm not sure what to expect going forward.  I always hope for the best.  The tools are there.  How fast they mature and get into their stride is unknown.  It's going to be one helluva ride.  The fun times and the haters will make the season an interesting one for sure.

My player of the weekend is Drake Caggiula.  He was noticeable on both games.

SCSU bites UND 3-2

Grand Forks, ND – What a difference a week makes, for the University of North Dakota.
Last Saturday night, during a game against the U-18 team UND sophomore forward Drake Caggiula tried to jump over a U-18 player, the sophomore forward fell and landed on his head.  Caggiula was taken off of the ice on a stretcher and transported to Altru Hospital. At first, it didn’t look good and it appeared that the talented forward might be seriously injured and miss some time.
Fortunately, that ended up not being the case.
Fast forward to this weekend, Caggiula was in the lineup and laid out a Huskie forward with a huge check, on his first shift. He also scored a highlight-reel goal at 3:10 of the opening period.

UND would give up three goals in the third period to Kevin Gravel, Kalle Kossila and Andrew Prochno. UND never could get any closer than one goal back and ended up losing the game 3-2, in their first ever  NCHC home conference game to the Saint Cloud State University Huskies.
Even though UND lost the game, Caggiula seemed relieved that he was able to get back out on ice after last week’s game.
“Nice to be back,” Caggiula said.  “Missed the first day of practice this week, I really told trainers that I want to go aggressive with the rehab. To get me back out there in the best condition that I could be in, I felt pretty good being out there.  It’s pretty exciting; I was pretty scared last week. It was just a good feeling to get out on the ice.”
One person that didn’t seem “real” happy with the results of the game was head coach Dave Hakstol. This is what the head coach had to say about the game.
“I thought it was a good hockey game, back-and-forth with a few momentum swings,” UND coach Dave Hakstol said. “I thought we were back on our heels for five minutes. Credit them for that little push, but we look for that push to come out of our locker room at the start of the third period.”
After five games this season there is one area of concern, the power play. UND is 4/24 on the power play (.167). On the flip side of the equation, UND has gone 1/27 on the penalty kill. Actually, UND has killed 26 opponent power plays in a row.
With the win SCSU is 4-0-1 and 1-0 in NCHC play, with the loss, UND dropped to 2-2-1 overall and 1-2 in the NCHC. The same two teams play again tomorrow night at 7:07 p.m. central.

UND will have nine games that are going to be televised and available on DirecTV and Dish Network. Seven of these games, UND will be playing on the road. Both games of the BU and DU series will be on TV. That's big for fans that won't be able to travel to the games.

While it’s not as good of a deal as last year's package, it’s better than nothing. I am torn, I can watch some of these games on my DirecTV, but I can’t get the local games because Midco Spots Network is still not on DirecTV. That means there will be no highlight videos this season, unless something changes. I thought about cancelling my DirecTV and going back to Midco, but I like the sports pack that's on DirecTV. Last year, I was able to watch the GLI and the Bean Pot because I had DirecTV.

One UND game will be on  NESN, NESN DirecTV 628, Dish Network 434.
One UND game will be on NBC Sports Network, DirecTV 220, Dish Network 159
One UND game will be on Root Sports Network, DirecTV 683, Dish Network 414.

UND SID Breaks down UND's TV Situation

For those that haven't seen this, @UNDSID explains UND's TV situation on Sioux Sports. This could answer some questions that you might have.

I'm all for engaging in discussion on here if we can leave the name-calling (different post) and conspiracy theories out of it. The person I talked to was not affiliated with Midco, nor were they trying to "sell" UND's "media people" on anything. I merely asked in casual conversation, out of my own curiosity, about FTA and its prevalence in this day and age.

Believe me, the last thing I want to do is rehash the exact same discussion every month about the television situation. I would guess most of you feel the same way. No, it is not ideal in its current incarnation, but how many collegiate television situations are? It is an extremely fluid landscape but we are committed to making the best of it. Not just now, but going forward.

There are some on here (and elsewhere) who continue to presume that we as an athletics department -- the paid professionals whose job it is to operate in the best interests of our University and our student-athletes -- don't value maximum exposure. That we apparently are content to have fewer games on national television. That we aren't concerned with losing hockey viewers who previously watched us on FCS. This is utterly preposterous.

Over the past six years under Brian Faison:
§  A relationship has been established with FOX College Sports (available in more than 50 million homes) that has provided live national broadcasts of not just UND men's hockey, but also UND women's hockey, football, men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball.
§  A partnership has been formed with Midco Sports Network that not only provides us with a regional broadcast stronghold, but ever-important financial stability. Further, as we begin just year two of that 5-year partnership, Midco has already addressed some of the biggest macro (high definition) and micro (penalty clock) issues that many fans have had with our broadcasts over the years.
§  Midco has also committed to produce and broadcast North Dakota Hockey with Dave Hakstol, the first men's hockey-specific show we've had in at least 20 years, if ever (my time here dates only to the mid-90s so I don't know if there was a Gino Gasparini show). This show, along with UND Sports Extra and UND Insider Weekly, provide us with no fewer than three weekly television shows.
§  Significant resources (financial and manpower) have been committed to widening and improving our online coverage. This ranges from live events (webcasts that include all men's hockey, women's hockey, football, men's basketball, women's basketball and volleyball home games, as well as select soccer, baseball and softball games) to original programming (Through These Doors, Opening Drive, etc.). This has also included the continued development of mobile apps, now and going forward.
§  The state and regional radio network has been significantly expanded.
§  If the exposure discussion goes beyond the traditional realm, our student-athletes have been featured prominently by Sports Illustrated, TSN, CBC, New York Times, USA Today, Wall Street Journal, ESPN the Magazine, Los Angeles Times and more. Truthfully, many of these opportunities simply fall into our lap. But quite often, we must aggressively pitch and pursue them. That is our job.

Yes, fewer men's hockey home games will be available on national TV this year. Unfortunately, that was the cost of business associated with forming a first-rate men's hockey conference. Do we as a department find the loss of those games ideal? Of course not, but that doesn't mean that we will stop trying to eventually reclaim that full national footprint. We are hopeful it will prove to be a shining example of one step backward to take two steps forward. As with anything, these things take time.

This athletics department is certainly never beyond reproach, and it is the fans who serve as our checks and balances. That is a good thing.

But I would hope that the bullet points above serve as evidence that this department is anything but ignorant when it comes to matters of exposure.

UND: Grand Forks Ranked 17th towns under 250,000 population

GeauxSioux posted this over on Sioux Sports. It’s worth a look.
The “college experience” is about more than simply attending a top-notch university. The city or town where the school is located also is important, the American Institute for Economic Research (AIER) suggests in its 2012-2013 “AIER College Destinations Index” (AIER CDI).

The AIER CDI includes the top 75 towns and cities in the United States for college students, based on a larger evaluation of the 227 U.S. metropolitan statistical areas (MSAs) with student populations of 15,000 or more. [Aier.org]

Good Bye to an old friend,Old REA Demolished on Monday

As most of you know, the "old Ralph" comes down on Monday at 10:00 a.m. there is a nice article in today's Grand Forks Herald talking about the old barn. I came to Grand Forks, ND and attended UND in September of 1993 and saw many games in the Old Ralph.

It was a loud building, in the late 1990's when UND had returned to the top of college hockey world, during the Dean Blais years. One of my favorite games was against the Gophers on January 23, 1999 and UND was behind going into the third period and scored something like 4 or 5 goals to win 6-5 and complete the weekend sweep. That building was really loud. Feel free to share your favorite memories.

Forum headline: Former UNO, UND football coach arrested in Iowa

The Fargo Forum probably was falling all over itself to put up that headline. To quote the A.P. article that the Forum doctored, "[Pat] Behrns had been head coach of the University of North Dakota football team from 1980 to 1985." Behrns hasn't coached at UND for 28 years. This is the same newspaper that won't hold their head football coach or the football players at NDSU accountable.

UND Hockey: What Happened, day 2

Today, I have been thinking about this past season that ended at the West Region in Grand Rapids, Michigan with a 4-1 loss to Yale.

Like I mentioned in another article, this is most wonderful time of the year. It’s also very stressful. There is a finality, which surrounds the college hockey tourney. Seasons and careers end, with losses in the National tourney.
There are college players that will sit in the locker room with their jersey still on hours after a loss, and not want to take off their jersey, for the last time.
I like many others UND fans are trying to find answers, a day after UND’s season ended for a 13th year in a row without winning an NCAA title.  Many in the UND fan base are getting restless.
Monitoring the twitterverse last night was interesting.
When that first national title finally comes, and I believe it’s a matter of time before that first one comes, that second one might not take as long to replicate.
After watching our favorite team get beat at their own game, by a gritty, hungrier Yale team, I don’t know if there are any short, quick answers.
Hockey is a funny game and things don’t always play out the way that you think that they should. If you would have told me that B.C. would have gotten beaten the past weekend by Union, I would have told you that you were nuts.
Think about this, UMass-Lowell, Saint Cloud State, Yale and Quinnipiac are going to the Frozen Four. Yale and Saint Cloud State barely made the NCAA tourney. I am pretty sure that there aren’t many people that predicted that bracket. If there is, I am that person picking my lottery numbers as well, because I have a new retirement plan.
Some might point their fingers at the season schedule, which was the 12th toughest in the country, and say that the physical grind finally caught up with them and took it’s toll on them. I don’t know, maybe. The new NCHC isn’t going to be much better, if anything it’s going to be worse.
I do, find it interesting that some want to throw a head coach under the bus that has never had a losing season in nine years as head coach and has a record of 235-119-37 (.648).  Sure, this season record of 22-13-7 (.607) is the worst of Hakstol’s nine seasons, but let’s put things into perspective.
While UND night not have won an NCAA title, the season wasn’t a total loss, UND did make the NCAA tourney for the 11th straight season in a row, that’s the longest current NCAA streak. Also, UND again, had home ice for the WCHA playoffs and advanced to the WCHA Final Five, where it has a chance to win a fourth straight Broadmoor Trophy.  This time falling short, in their bid for a fourth straight, after the quarter final game, senior forward Danny Kristo said, “I have never felt like this before,” Kristo continued. “Obviously we won the last three. That was our goal coming in this year. Obviously, we wanted to four peat, or what not. You just go day-by-day. I thought we took about 20 minutes off there, between the second and third period and kind of got lulled to sleep, maybe we deserved to win the game, but we didn’t play to our potential, so at this time of the year you’re not going to win games. You can’t leave the game to a bounce of the puck.”
Looking back on that statement, we didn’t play to our potential, it kind of explains UND 2012-13 season, and they just didn’t, for whatever reason fire on all cylinders. For whatever reason, UND didn’t get any puck luck, and if four of five of Rocco Grimaldis pipes or crossbars goes in, UND might win a couple of more games over the course of a season.
The UND hockey teams also kind of fell asleep for periods of games and never really put together a string of games where they played really good after the Christmas break. For the first time a Dave Hakstol team didn’t go on the patented second half run, they played at a (.583) clip and yet they almost won the league title.
Lastly, UND made the NCAA West regional final before bowing out to Yale, but in the end they just didn’t seem to have it, when they needed to.
Traditionally Hakstol’s teams have been known for being a bear to play against after the first of the year going an impressive 95-30-13 went 9-5-2 (.625). Again, that’s not a bad record.
What I am trying to say here, is the man is a good hockey coach, no matter how you slice it.
This team was not your usual UND hockey team, they were more of a finesse team built for speed and the big ice and wasn’t built to blow a team out of the building like years past. This takes some getting used to from a fans perspective.
Down the stretch, at times it looked like teams were beating UND at its own game. They were beating UND by being tough to play against and limiting their time-and-space and capitalizing off of their turnovers.
Also, the game is changing and the on ice officials aren’t allowing the big hits anymore as we have seen with Andrew MacWilliam being assessed two major penalties, for what appears to be two legal shoulder-to-shoulder hits.
Looking at this year’s roster, there isn’t as many of the physical type players that UND has had in years past, that are going to check you out of the building.
What I am trying to say, is that I think that UND hockey is evolving and might have experienced some growing pains this season. This is just from what I have seen from covering the team this year.
Finally, the 2012-13 UND hockey team was a pleasure to cover and I will miss this year’s senior class. All of them are character people and amazing young men and I think that all of them will be successful in whatever they do in life.
