One step back, before we move forward (UND vs. UMN)

This is the big story that is making it’s way around Twitter this afternoon. From the looks of it, Minnesota Gophers beat writer Roman Augustoviz must have listened to Gophers head coach Don Lucia on WCCO radio last night. So, after a great weekend of hockey and after being asked about the rivalry probably hundreds of times, I guess he’s tired of being asked about the rivalry.

Roman Empire — Gophers coach Don Lucia used his weekly radio show on Monday to defend himself from critics complaining that North Dakota won’t be on the U’s schedule the next three seasons.

“We have a rule at the University of Minnesota — not put in by me — but by the regents that we can not play a team with an Indian nickname,” Lucia said. “And for years, this controversy with North Dakota and the nickname has been going on. And it has been fought in the courts and everything else.

“And it did not get settled until this summer. Well — if you want to put the blame on me for not waiting to find out whether it was going to get settled or not, then so be it. I can accept that fact.

“I wasn’t going to wait. When the conferences all broke up a couple of years ago. And we were heading into all these new conferences, it was kind of a frenzy and free-for-all for scheduling nonconference games. And when we had the opportunity to schedule some good opponents — I could have waited, but I chose not to wait. But I wanted to ensure we had a good schedule for our fans and our team.”

Whether you believe their company line or not, that’s up to you. It is what it is. This is what the Gophers head coach is saying, and he’s sticking to it. Hey whatever, we could discuss this till we are blue in the face if we want, but Lucia isn’t giving in. That being said, I can tell you that many in the UND fan-base are cynical. If you read some of the newspaper articles and hockey sites from this past weekend, you will see that not everyone was buying into this either. [click to view] and [click to view]

But I digress.

I have to admit that I am sad that this past weekend was the last regular season conference match-up between the two teams, maybe for some time. Such is life. Life is full of disappointments. I do think some fans are a bit delusional if they think that they can just replace the historic UND vs. UMN series with another random series against another hockey team and get the same intensity that this historic series has.

While there are currently no future games scheduled between the two teams, at least in the immediate future, there’s a very good chance that the two teams could meet again in the NCAA Playoffs. History tells us that there is a very good chance the two teams will see each other again, probably in the next year or two. Both teams have a history, and have met three times in the last eight years in the NCAA tourney, with UND holding a 2-1 edge.

It’s also a shame that a once great hockey conference is going to be a shell of it’s former self starting next season, but that is really something we can no longer control as well. These types of decisions are made by the folks that are paid big money to make these kinds of decisions, and they don’t always do what the fans want.

Finally, I also think that the players are going to miss this historic series as well. If  you don’t believe me, all you have to do is look at the comments from Gopher forward Nate Condon who was named WCHA Offensive Player of the week after he had a five point (2g-3a—5pts) weekend against UND.

I guess for now, the series will have to wait, and all we can do is hope that cooler heads prevail. I think eventually the rivalry will resume play, sooner rather than later.

A few things related to TV broadcasts

I know a few people pinged me both on twitter and on my cell phone last night and said that they couldn't watch the game on DirecTV.

I didn't see the tweet by @UNDSID until I got to the Ralph and when I left my home to go to the game last night the game between UND and USNDT U-18 team the game was still actually listed on my DirecTV channel line up as well (FCS channel 626).

I have not seen an actual broadcast of UND hockey as of yet so I can't comment on the quality of the broadcasts... I did watch most of the UND vs UNA football game on MidcoNet both at work and on my father-in-laws television and I thought it was a high quality broadcast.

Tweet(s) of the day... Doom and gloom

This is the tweet of the day in my opinion. It's also sad because I do believe that there is definitely going to be a lockout. This afternoon, the NHLPA turned down the owner's latest proposal.

It does sound like this time that the owners did give in a little bit in their latest proposal to the NHLPA - yet the owners are still asking for quite a bit give back by the players.

Under the owners' new six-year phase-in proposal, players would receive 49% next season, and end up with 47% in the sixth year. In immediate terms, players would receive a roughly 9% decrease in salary next season. In the league's previous proposal, the first year loss was pegged at 19%. According to the league's numbers, this proposal is asking for $275 million less in concessions than owners asked for in their last proposal. [Kevin Allen, USA Today]

So it's looks like there is going to be an unprecedented third work stoppage under Gary Bettman. I don't think that history is going to look very favorably on Gary Bettman... I believe that Gary Bettman is one of the more polarizing figures of our time when it comes to sports figures.

I think we can now start referring to Gary Bettman as the lockout commissioner. Also, the mood is starting to get even more toxic as people are beginning to realize there basically is no chance a lockout is going to be avoided it appears that the owners aren't moving very far from their two previous proposals makes me think that they're not going to move very far.

I am wondering what the split will finally end up being when the next CBA is agreed to by the NHL players and the NHL owners? Kind of looks like the owners are trying to get a 50/50 split with the players like the other professional leagues do.

NHL - 'Together We Can' goes viral

This video has been making the trip around Twitter today and it's kind of gone viral... I you haven't seen it yet - it's a very moving video - I would rate this video as one of the better one's to come out as of late. I am sure that most NHL fans can look at the video and find a some thing moving from the montage. Every time I watch the video I noticed something new.

If you're emotional person it you may find the video very moving - especially if you're familiar with the Ray Bourque story - at the end of the video Ray Bourque finally after playing with the same team for 20 seasons - gets a chance to lift the Stanley Cup while a member of the Colorado Avalanche.

Ironically, the cup was handed to him by Avalanche captain Joe Sakic who normally in that case would have taken a lap around the arena with the Stanley Cup simply handed the Stanley Cup to Ray Bourque.

Another interesting historical fact, the goaltender on the 2000-01 Colorado Avalanche was former Montreal Canadian's all-world goalie Patrick Roy who had been a former league rival of Bourque's for many years - the two had played many heated games against each other while they were a member of the Boston Bruins and Montreal Candians - the two had played many epic games against each other were now teammates on a 2000-01 Stanley Cup winning team in Colorado.

If your unfamiliar with the story, Ray Bourque had played for the Boston Bruins for 20 season, during the 1999-2000 season Bourque asked the Boston Bruins to trade him to a team that has a chance at winning the Stanley Cup - the Boston Bruins GM at the time, Harry Sinden honored Bourque's request - Ray was traded to the Colorado Avalanche before the 2000 trade deadline and won the Stanley Cup the following season with the Avalanche during the  (2000-2001) season.

Bourque would go out a winner as the cup clincher was his last game in the NHL Bourque played 1826 games in the NHL and on his final game he was able to have his name put on the Stanley Cup - hence the Gary Thorne call, "after twenty two years...RAYMOND BOURQUE!"

The UND Hockey Prospectus was released today - some fans have wondered where the members of the UND Hockey team are from - they're from all over the place. 

 

Looks like the end of the niceties in the CBA negotiations

Last night, I was out of town at the races in Fargo and during a rain delay I decided to check my twitter feed when I saw these tweets make it’s way across my twitter feed on numerous posts.

Bettman: “still a wide gap between us with not much time to go”

Bettman says after analyzing PA’s proposal the NHL owners understand it “but there is still a wide gap between us with not much time to go.”

Bettman: wide gap remains. In other words, lockout all but certain. No meetings until next Wednesday.

The message is clear that the owners really don’t plan on budging very much on their first proposal and this doesn’t really look like a partnership anymore. Any way you look at this – the players are going to be the losers in the CBA negotiations. It looks more like a shakedown than a negotiation.

Here is a break down on how far apart the two sides are – from TSN

Current system@

Salary cap: $70.2 million

Salary floor: $54.2 million

NHL's proposal@

Salary cap: $55.3 million

Salary floor: $39.3 million

NHLPA's proposal@

Salary cap: $69 million

Salary floor: $53 million

70.2 – 55.3 = 14.9 is a very big gap between the two sides. I am not very optimistic anymore that the two sides can avoid a work stoppage. It doesn’t appear that the owners are going to move off of their stance and I stand by my statement that the owners appear that they want to weaken the players union even further.

Redwing77's Perspective on the Penn State Debacle

There's a lot going on and a lot have been discussed by Goon or by commentators on the posts and at large by any and all media members even on an international scale (BBC is covering it).  And the truth is, this situation has gone beyond simply a bad man doing bad things.  It's become a blemish on collegiate sports in general... even though bad stuff has been happening for a long time now.

Some say it is cultural

I had a discussion (still ongoing) over Twitter with a Ira Socol who wrote a very interesting and well researched blog post. He states that Penn State be allowed to play... but they should play the entire season with empty stands.

This is not an unprecedented thing.  In his article, he cites 3 soccer teams that had to play 5 games (2 teams played 1 game each and one other played the last 2 games) without fans in attendence.  However, he cites the reasoning behind this and all of the reasons stem from actions of the FANS with relation to the team.  One was racial abuse to a player.  Another was due to physical violence where a fan ran onto the field and attacked a visitng player.  All of this is caused by violence.

But what of Penn State's situation?  He argues that the culture that surrounds Penn State football is of such blind devotion that it basically produced an environment where this act would seem not permissable but certainly capable of being covered up.  He argues that without this societal and cultural smokescreen, Penn State would not have gotten away with such an act for as long as they had.

I believe he's partially correct.  Society did not cause Sandusky to molest those boys.  It didn't stop McQueary from stopping the abuse (which he did not) or prevent him from notifying Paterno.  It did not cause the wheels to stop turning.  The prestige and power that those in the know had was threated by the Sandusky thing and couple that with their corrupt need for such power, they did not act.

THAT is the prominant issue with this affair.  Society may act like an enabler but it takes corruption and bad ethics to become enabled. 

There is no excuse for what happened at Penn State.  And they should pay.  The problem is:  Why punish the fans?  They did not perform 45 acts of sexual abuse.  They did not smear the name of Penn State, really.  They did not commit any violent act or any racially motivated abuse of the caliber that those European soccer teams were punished for.

The truth is that we have to be careful with this line of thought.  It is perilously close to saying that Penn State was merely abiding by the tolerances of society rather than trying to save their own power and prestige by covering up a heinous atrocity.

So what is the Price to be paid?

Since I do not believe in punishing the fans, I think that I would do the following:

1.  SIGNIFICANT reduction of scholarships for more than 4 years.
2.  No bowl games for the same time period that there are reductions of scholarships
3.  Asterisks by all of Paterno's records
4.  Joe Paterno's name and likeness should be removed from all signs, visual aids, and media in and around Beaver Stadium and other PSU athletic facilities.
5.  For the entire season, box seats will be closed and all general admission seats will be issued at the discretion of the Penn Statue AD and Administration at the price of FREE.  The students will still get their section or sections.
6.  All institutional support for the team is suspended for 1 year.  No band.  No cheerleaders.  No halftime shows. No fundraisers that would raise money for athletics at Penn State.
7.  All money that would normally be gathered for the athletic department that comes through on-site merchandise sales, concessions, and any items sold at the Stadium be immediately forfeited to either go towards general scholarship funding, a University sanctioned event or organization not related to the Athletic department, or to a charity. 
8.  (This one isn't possible but I can dream)  A media blackout.  NO Penn State Home Games will be televised locally, regionally, or nationally for one year.  If you don't go to Beaver Stadium, you don't see or hear the game.  PERIOD.

All academic services provided to athletes, such as tutoring and the like, will continue as normal. 

The NCAA says there is no Death Penalty but I argue that there is.  If Penn State does not get the Death Penalty, which I believe they won't, I believe that the NCAA has doled out the last death penalty ever:  to the Death Penalty.  There is no situation, therefore, that would warrant it so the threat of a Death Penalty becomes null and void.  It no longer exists, folks.  No need to fear.

The true debate is:  Where do the NON football athletics and Penn State fit into this?

Another $900,000.00 Question – Does Nick Bjugstad sign with the Florida Panthers?

I’ve been monitoring the Twitter traffic the past couple of weeks and one of the main topics of discussion amongst Gopher fans is; will Golden Gopher forward Nick Bjugstad sign an entry level contract with the Florida Panthers? From everything that I have read, it appears that Bjugstad wowed them in South Florida this past week and was a man among boys.

Bjugstad "if" he signs will get the rookie max - money probably isn't' the concern - the big decision is whether he wants to leave college two years early and begin his professional career - which according to Michale Russo of the Star Tribune, will probably be in the AHL, because the Panthers are stacked with forwards.

I think Bjugstad is a great hockey prospect and doesn't have a lot to prove in college so I wouldn't be surprised if he signed a professional contract. So we wait, just like we did with the past few summers. I am sure we will hear which way he is leaning in the next couple of weeks. 

Harvey Fialkov, Sun Sentinel --- Panthers prospect Nick Bjugstad firmly denied that the Panthers had made him any contract offers or that he had turned down any (that a source told me yesterday). He will talk to his family about his decision in the coming days and hopes to decide over the next two weeks. Bjugstad has looked like a man among boys at this camp. Ditto for Jonathan Huberdeau who wowed the fans and teammates with a spectacular shootout goal today in which he turned his back on the goalie before switching from backhand to forehand and backhand for a score between the five-hole.

More bad fan behavior - Parise draws the ire of the moronic fans

This is my second installment of morons of the twitter-verse. One of my favorite Twitter feeds is the Angry NHL fans @LOLVancouver  I am going to apologize for the coarse language right off of the bat - most of the stuff that I posted here is down right moronic - some of it borders on the realm of what I would consider anti-social behavior. Reading these posts  you have to really question some of these people's their sanity. Some of the tweets I read were silly as well.

You have to wonder if some of these people realize that everything that you put on the internet is out there for all to see? If I was in human resources and one of these people were one of my potential recruits I would think twice about hiring these people. These are just a sampling of some of the worst ones that I have seen today.

Here are a few that twitter poster that don't know how to spell the word traitor... I didn't know that Zach Parise was a trader?

If anything Zach Parise has been loyal and was a New Jersey Devil for seven seasons. Actually, if we are counting the lockout season, it would be eight seasons in the the seasons in the New Jersey Devils organization. I am not sure how this clown and others came to this conclusion.

Wow! You want a sports figure to die because he didn't sign or resign with your favorite team. I am sure this guy's mother would be proud.

Miles Koules "won't" be going to UND

Brad Elloitt Schlossman reported on his media blog and as well in the Grand Forks Herald that Miles Koules has backed out of his commitment and now will not be going to UND. Koules will instead play for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. This is the third recruit from the NTDP team to de-committ and go to the CHL.

There seems to be something going on at the NTDP wonder if the UND coaches will continue to recruit kids from the USNDT after being spurned by another one this weekend, counting J.T. Miller, Stephan Matteau and now Miles Koules. 

Just a hunch I wouldn't count on Seth Jones going to UND. This was on his Twitter Page yesterday.

The Tweet that some took issue with

Apparently the LA Kings have apologized for this witty tweet. I don't understand why they should. I like many other people, thought the tweet was funny and I agree with the tweet. I just hope the Kings can eliminate the Canucks so we don't have to watch their antics and their diving up and down the ice through out the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

David Shoalts, Globe and Mail --- The Los Angeles Kings have apologized for a flippant tweet from their official Twitter feed that mocked the Vancouver Canucks.

“We encourage our digital team to be creative, interactive and to apply a sense of humour whenever possible. To anyone who found it offensive we sincerely apologize,” Mike Altieri, the Kings’ vice-president, communications and content, said in an e-mail message Thursday afternoon.

Justin Fontaine suspended by Houston Aeros

Image via WikipediaFormer Minnesota Duluth Bulldog Justin Fontain has been suspended by the Houston Aeros for his comments he made on Twitter on Monday night.

Michael Russo , Star Tribune --- The Wild suspended Houston Aeros forward Justin Fontaine for two games after he used a gay slur during a Twitter exchange about the Grammy Awards with a teammate on Sunday night.

Fontaine soon removed the tweet and apologized, saying, "My apologies to everyone, it was wrong. Twitter rookie and it came out totally wrong. It was a roommate battle, nothing more. #sorry."

By that time, however, it was retweeted by another teammate and spread across the Internet.

"Minnesota Sports and Entertainment (MSE) apologizes for the offensive slur that was posted by Justin Fontaine on Twitter last night," the Wild said in a statement Monday night. "Fontaine has been suspended from playing in the next two games for the Houston Aeros."

Bruins and Canucks - more controversy

This is the play that lead to one of the controversies from today's game, the refs gave Bruins forward Milan Lucic a game misconduct because they thought that "he might have" left the players bench to engage in a brawl/fight. The NHL reviewed the video and has rescinded the game misconduct penalty and they have ruled that Lucic was legally on the ice and and did not leave the players bench to engage in a fight. Much to the chagrin of the Canucks fans and Bruins haters Lucic will not be suspended by the NHL.

Boston Bruins forward Brad Marchand will not be as lucky as Lucic as he probably will have a disciplinary hearing with Brendan Shanahan the NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety.

Let me be clear, I hate the Vancouver Canucks will all of my fiber, they are one of the most unlikable teams in the NHL with characters like Alex Burrows and Maxim Lapierre you enjoy watching their opposition pound them into the ice. That being said, this was an unneeded penalty at a critical juncture of the game, it's a selfish move and there was no reason to Marchand make that play.

There was a lot of discussion about this hit on Twitter, it's a dangerous hit but you can see that Marchand hits Sami Salo who is much bigger than Marchand in the thigh. Marchand's five minute major cost the Boston Bruins two goals and it was the reason the Canucks won the game. As far as what Marchand will get in the way of discipline, no clue. Due to the inconsistent ruling coming from Shanahan, you have to wonder if Shanny is using the Colin Campbell Wheel of Justice.

This turned out to be an odd event. The on ice officials probably made the right call by penalizing both players. I guess Wiese didn't want to get pounded by Bruins tough guy Shawn Thornton.

Douglas Flynn, NESN.COM --- Gregory Campbell did attempt to exact some retribution on Lapierre later in the first, squaring off for a long fight directly off the faceoff after Brad Marchand had tied the game. Thornton then dropped his gloves on the ensuing faceoff, but Wiese backed out of a verbal agreement to engage.

"He's said, 'Let's go,'" Thornton said. "I don't know if he was talking to me or someone else. [Referee] Donnie [VanMassenhoven] heard him and that's why he went with me [to the penalty box], I'm assuming. Donnie said, 'Wait 'til the puck drop,' I said, 'Of course,' and I heard [Weise] say, 'We'll go.' Maybe he was taking to Quaider [Adam McQuaid]. I don't know. Obviously I thought it was go time."

That proved just one of the many frustrations of the day as the Bruins were unable to continue their domination of the Canucks on home ice this time around.

Illinois to add Division I hockey?

According to the Twitter feed of Lets Play Hockey the University of Illinois of the Big Ten Conference is considering bumping their club hockey team up to Division I. It would be interesting if the rumor is true. As we have seen with Penn State in the past, it's amazing that a donation can do for a school.

The boys over at Gopher Puck Live had this in their twitter feed today so I thought I would share it with you. Wally Shaver does the Gopher hockey radio broadcasts along with Frank Mazzocco. Should be a good series between the Fighting Sioux and the Minnesota Gophers.
