TSN.CA --- The National Hockey League has announced more nominees for its year end awards, unveiling the finalists for the Lady Byng and Frank J. Selke trophies.
David Backes of the St. Louis Blues, Patrice Bergeron of the Boston Bruins and Pavel Datsyuk of the Detroit Red Wings are the three finalists for the Frank J. Selke Trophy as the NHL's top defensive forward, the league announced Monday.
Backes had the highest average ice time per game among forwards (19 minutes 59 seconds) on a Blues club that allowed the fewest goals in the NHL by a wide margin. The six-foot-three, 225-pound centre was a punishing physical presence, doling out a team-leading 226 hits to join Los Angeles forward Dustin Brown as the only players to record 200 hits or more in each of the past five seasons.
Backes led the Blues in faceoffs, blocked shots and posted a plus-15 rating. The Blues captain is an NHL trophy finalist for first time in his seven-year career and is the first Blues player up for the Selke since Michal Handzus finished second in 2000.
Bergeron led the NHL in plus-minus (plus-36) and posted a plus-18 rating both at home and on the road in helping the Bruins rank second in the Eastern Conference in team defence (2.39 goals-against average).

Backes, Bergeron and Datsyuk up for the Selke
The National Hockey League announced their year-end awards today and Former MSU-M Mavericks and current St. Louis Blues forward David Backes was named a finalist for the Frank J. Selke trophy. I would think this is another great argument for the NCAA hockey being a great place to develop future talent for the NHL.

Oshie shows off his offensive moves
Wow! This was one of "the" highlights from last night play in the NHL's Stanley Cup Playoffs. Check out the unbelievable moves by former Fighting Sioux forwawd T.J. Oshie as he assisted on a goal by former MSU Maverick David Backes. The Blues beat the Sharks 3-0 to even their series 1-1.

Chris Stewart gets suspended for three games.
You would think that after the first three or four of these suspensions that the players in the NHL would get the message; if the player is facing the boards you can't hit him. Someone is going to get maimed for life by one of these checking from behind plays.
I guess we are going to keep seeing these videos from the NHL until the players in the NHL get the message. In this case Chris Stewart absolutely destroys Detroit's Niklas Kronwall.

Brian Elliott's sick save against the Sharks.
Check out this really sick goalies save by former Badger goalie Brian Elliott on San Jose Shark Dan Boyle. I am sure that will probably be a candidate to be on of the top ten saves of the week. Elliot was making his season debut for the Blues and stopped 34/36 shots to give the Blues the win.

Detroit Red Wings sign G Ty Conklin
Image via WikipediaYesterday Redwing77 said this.
It's no surprise that Detroit wants to sign another goaltender to backup Howard and MacDonald. I'd love to see someone signed who can compete with MacDonald for the #2 spot. MacCollom isn't ready yet.Looks like Redwing77 got his wish as his favorite team the Detroit Redwings signed former UNH star Ty Conklin to a one year deal. Personally, I think that Conklin is a serviceable backup that can step in and play valuable minutes when the starter needs a break or suffers an injury.
Here are a few goaltenders I'd love to see Detroit look at (all UFAs):
Ty Conklin
Brent Krahn
Pascal Leclaire
Justin Pogge
Hannu Toivonen
DETROIT - The Detroit Red Wings have signed goaltender Ty Conklin to a one-year contract.
The move Wednesday comes a day after veteran Chris Osgood announced his retirement, leaving the Red Wings needing a backup for starting goalie Jimmy Howard.
Conklin started 20 games for the St. Louis Blues last season, going 8-8-4 with a 3.22 goals-against average.
The 35-year-old Conklin has played eight seasons in the NHL with Edmonton, Columbus, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Detroit and St. Louis. He was with the Red Wings in 2008-09, going 25-11-2 with a 2.51 GAA.

Former Sioux Oshie out with broken ankle (video included)
s/t to pro hockey talk as I took the video from his site. Looks like T.J. Oshie was hurt in the scrum after the hit. None the less, this is not very good news for the St. Louis Blues hockey team; according the St. Louis beat writer Jeremy Rutherford of the St Louis Today, former Fighting Sioux forward T.J. Oshie has a broken ankle and will need surgery.
Jeremy RutherfordThis is what the St. Louis Radio station KMOX had to say.
According to Blues coach Davis Payne, forward T.J. Oshie has suffered a broken ankle, which will require surgery.
ST. LOUIS (KMOX) — Already having their worst night of the season, the Blues may receive more bad news when T.J. Oshie’s injury is determined.
With just under 11:00 minutes left in the third period down 8-1, Oshie jumped on the back of a Columbus Blue Jackets player trying to break up a fight. However, when the player fell backwards with Oshie on his back, it appeared that the third-year forward came down on the left leg awkwardly.
The reaction from Oshie drew the Blues training staff to the ice immediately. He was not able to come off the ice, nor able to get to the locker room, on his own power.

In Irrelevent but Unforseen NHL News... (RW77)
Montreal Goaltender Jaroslav Halak was traded today to the St. Louis Blues for their top prospect and Ian Shultz.
Yup. You heard that right. Halak is out of Montreal. That means perennial ubersieve disguised as Roy-like savior Carey Price is now assured the #1 goaltending position (barring something stupid like signing Nabokov or somesuch).
Former Habs GM Gainey is now laughing his backside off.
It is true that Halak was unhappy to start last season. He wanted more playing time and thought he deserved it compared to Price's play. Despite the fact that such a demand comes across as whiny and self-centered, Halak was right. And he proved it.
Well, the Habs will not make the playoffs next season unless something truly remarkable happens. Their top scorer is a free agent (Plekanec) and their best goaltender now in St. Louis.
In other news, this surely means the end of Chris Mason's tenure in St. Louis. Perhaps Montreal will sign him to back up Price?
Obviously, the winner here is St. Louis. The loser is the Habs. Eller is almost Plekanec-like in potential and Schultz is a huge question mark. Apparently he was a 2008 3rd round pick of the Blues and his junior eligibility is up. So, in essence, The Habs give up one of the best young goaltenders in the league for an NHL ready forward and a throwaway. With last year's performance.... I think the Habs could have gotten more for Halak than they did.
On the other hand, only a retard would trade Halak... oh... sorry Habs fans.

T.J. Oshie returns to the line up tonight.
Props to T.J. Oshie's Dad Tim for the heads up and also read (the link here). Oshie is going to be skating on a line with former MSU-M Star David Backes. The game will be on Versus which can be seen on channel 69 and 309 in Grand Forks, ND.
If T.J. Oshie can play as good as he’s been dressing lately, Blues fans will be happy. The other day, Oshie was donning a flashy, grey pinstripe suit.
“It’s a little too standout-ish for me, but oh well . . .,” Oshie said.
How much does a fancy suit go for these days . . . $1,000, $2,000?
“I don’t know, I haven’t gotten the bill yet,” Oshie said. “I’m sure I’ll see it soon.”
More importantly, Blues fans will see Oshie in the lineup later tonight. He has missed 24 of the last 26 games with a high-ankle sprain, but he’ll make his return against New Jersey. He missed 13 games with the ankle sprain and then after playing Dec. 5 against Calgary, he reinjured his ankle Dec. 6 against Phoenix.
“I thought was ready to come back (last time), but the only thing was that scar tissue that was still in there,” Oshie said. “That scar tissue is gone now. It still pops every once in a while, but not a bad pop. It feels good, it feels strong.”
Oshie return gives the Blues some more skill up front. He’s going to play on wing on the Blues top line tonight. Here’s what the Blues’ top three lines should look like against New Jersey:
T.J. Oshie-Keith Tkachuk-David Backes
David Perron-Patrik Berglund-Brad Boyes
Alex Steen-Jay McClement-B.J. Crombeen
