Stanley Cup Final Preview

Well, if you would have asked me what the cup final would have been, I'd bet my life that I wouldn't have picked LA against the New York Rangers. It's 'The King" vs. the Kings. Broadway vs. Hollywood.

Lets take a look at how these two teams got to the cup final, first starting with LA. The Kings were close to being out after four games against San Jose in the first round, but would become only the fourth team in NHL history to rally from down 3-0 to win the series and stun San Jose and their hungry fan base. .Goaltender Jonathan Quick would have a very slow start to the series, but would catch his 2012 form by series end, putting the entire NHL on alert that the Kings were coming.

The second round had them facing the other in state rival, the Anaheim Ducks. In another series where they would have to go the distance, the Kings would have to win game 7 on the road once again to have a date with the Chicago Blackhawks in the Western Conference Finals. They would do just that in another grinding series against another division, and in state rival.

Finally, for the Western Conference Final. This rematch from last year against the defending champs, Chicago. Chicago would get themselves in a hole early, and this time it would be LA who would have the commanding series lead going up 3-1. However, it looked as if Chicago would get the momentum advantage by rolling off two straight wins to force a game 7 at home. It had looked as if LA's season was about to come to an end, but with roughly seven minutes left in regulation, Marian Gaborik would put a rebound into the back of the net and tie the game. The Kings would get their third road game 7 win of this playoffs, the first team in NHL history to do that, and they became four wins away from hoisting Lord Stanley once again.

Now for the Eastern Conference Champions, the New York Rangers. This is another team with a world class goalie that almost nobody picked to make it out of round two, or even round one. This is a team driven
by a couple of individual players stories, Dominic Moore on ESPN E:60 and Marty St. Louis losing his mother right before Mother's Day. Winning the first round against Philly in seven games, the Rangers knew they would have their word cut out for them if they could get by Pittsburgh in round two.

Round two saw the Blue Shirts playing Sid the Kid and an inconsistent goalie they call Flower. This series would turn out to be a great match-up and played pretty evenly throughout, even though the Rangers would find themselves in a 3-1 hole going into game five in Pittsburgh. The King would start to play like The King and New York found themselves in a spot they haven't been in in quite some time, the Eastern Conference Finals.

In an original six match-up, the Rangers would find themselves with home ice for the first time in the playoffs. Their opponent? The Montreal Canadiens. Montreal was Canada's only hope in these playoffs to win the cup this season, and Canada hasn't seen a cup champ since Montreal won it in 1993. New York would have something to say about that and would send the Habs packing. It would be New York's first trip to the cup final since 1994. I wonder what happened that year?

As for what I'd expect out of this series, speed and physicality. The Rangers will bring a lot of speed to the series, much more than the Kings saw in the entire playoffs so far. As for the physicality, LA will bring it with their big defensive core.

Who to watch:
For LA, they have many weapons who can put the puck in the net, but pay close attention to Marian Gaborik, the playoffs leading goal scorer, and that 70's line (Carter, Toffoli, and Pearson). This line has been on fire and will need to be kept in check.

For the Rangers, one must always watch the speedy Carl Hagelin. With his quick feet and quick release of the puck, he is always a threat. There are also the likely suspects in Brad Richards, Derek Stepan, Rick Nash, and Derek Brassard. Even though Nash hasn't done much in these playoffs, he will always be a threat when he is on the ice.

Finally, for who will win the Cup. It's simple. It comes down to what goalie is playing better in the series. You have two of the top three goaltenders in the world going head to head, Henrik Lundqvist and Jonathan Quick, and the one that breaks first will likely mean the series. Here's the thing though, even if one of them breaks, both teams still have very reliable back-ups as well.

My pick is the New York Rangers in six games. The cup gets hoisted in the most famous arena in the entire world, and the Blue Shirts come home with their first cup in 20 years.

New York Rangers and Montreal Canadiens Handshake, no Shenanigans

After watching the Boston Bruins and Montreal Canadiens go through the handshake line, it was nice to see a classy handshake. These two teams killed each other on the ice. There were two suspensions from this series (Brandon Prust and John Moore).

Montreal Canadiens: Carey Price back in full pads

Ruh-roh! The New York Rangers might want to put the Montreal Canadiens away in game six or they could end up facing Carey Price in game seven. Price was at practice, wearing full gear, and did face some shots. Price also did some side-to-side drills. Are you thinking what I am thinking?

Canada's Stanley Cup Drought

I can't believe it's been 20 years since the Stanley Cup was won by a team that resides in Canada. Ironically, it was the Montreal Canadiens that last won the Stanley Cup and they're probably not going to get out of the Eastern Conference Finals. The handshake game is tonight.
Mark Spector, Sportsnet -- Every June day was Edmonton Oilers Day in Edmonton 35 years ago. And when the Oilers failed to make it the Stanley Cup just twice in the eight years between 1983 and 1990, well, no problem. Montreal (1986) and Calgary (1989) took care of the Cup for Canada in Edmonton’s off years, even playing each other in ’89.

Can you imagine? Eight straight Cups featuring a Canadian team?

In the 22 Stanley Cups contested since, our country has sent six teams to the finals, winning just once. Ottawa took a turn in 2007, and each of Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver (twice) have suffered the indignity of a Game 7 loss in the final in the years since the Habs won our last Cup over Los Angeles in 1993.

(Video) History Will Be Made: Chris Kreider / Carey Price.

I think a fitting end to this series would be for New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider to score the game-winning goal.

Update: John Moore has a hearing for his on Dale Weise (Video)

New York Rangers forward John Moore was given a five-minute major and a match penalty for this hit on Montreal Canadians forward Dale Weise. I would be very shocked if Moore is playing in the next game. The hit was way late, and very high.

According to numerous beat writers on twitter, Moore will have a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety tomorrow. I expect that Moore will be suspended by the NHL. Brandon Prust was suspended for two games for almost the same hit.

Montreal Canadiens: Tomas Plekanec Gets a Two-Minute Diving Penalty

The Montreal Canadiens have been diving up and down the ice, all series long, and this was another blatant example of textbook embellishment. Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec was correctly penalized in this instance.

(Video) Martin St. Louis game-winning goal game four

New York Rangers forward Martin St. Louis makes no mistake as he buries the game-winning goal to give the New York Rangers a 3-2 win in overtime. This was an absolutely snipe. Hat tip to Carl Hagelin who had a two point game tonight.

(Video) Tomas Plekanec embellishment, Brian Boyle two minutes

This is a weak penalty in my opinion. Montreal Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec should have gotten a Emmy for his award winning performance. No really, he should have gotten a two-minute minor for embellishment. Now lets be clear, New York Rangers forward Brian Boyle shouldn't be hitting Plekanec up high with his stick, but that's a brutal call by the officials. Plekanec would make the Vancouver Canucks forwards' Ryan Kesler and Alex Burrows blush with that one.

Candiens Coach, "we know exactly where Derick Brassard is injured"

So, the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens Michel Therrien has cause a stir with these comments.
"We expect Derick Brassard to play and we know exactly where he's injured. Hockey is a small world," Therrien reportedly said in French, according to a tweet by a French-speaking TV reporter. (Newsday)
That almost sounds like the head coach of the Canadiens put a bounty on someone's head. New York Rangers Beat writer Larry Brooks of the New York Post, thinks the NHL should look into this matter. Sounds like it could be an exciting game tonight.

Brandon Prust Hit on Derek Stepan, Prust suspended two games

A two-game suspension is an joke , and no where near enough for this dirty, predatory hit.

These types of dirty hits have no place in the game of hockey, at any level. There's no defending this hit. It's a brutal, late, and it's interference. There's also significant contact with the head. This hit is unacceptable. Because of Brandon Prust's dirty hit, Derek Stephan has a broke jaw that required surgery today.

Brandon Prust Has A Hearing With The NHL Today

Montreal Canadiens' tough guy Brandon Prust has a phone hearing with the NHL's Department of Players Safety for his hit on New York Rangers center Derek Stephan. How many games will Prust get for this hit? Thoughts
NHL.com -- Montreal Canadiens left wing Brandon Prust will have a phone hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety on Friday afternoon for his hit on New York Rangers center Derek Stepan during the first period at Madison Square Garden on Thursday night.

No penalty was called on the play at 2:48 of the first period. Stepan briefly left the game before returning later in the first period.

Montreal won Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Final, 3-2, in overtime.

The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: Interference. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.

Montreal Candiens humor

This kind of explains things well for the Montreal Canadiens. I think they're finished without Carey Price in net for them.

Benoit Pouliot Boards Alexei Emelin

First off, these are hits that need to be removed from the game of hockey. New York Rangers forward Benoit Pouliot saw numbers and shouldn't have hit Montreal Canadiens defenseman Alexei Emelin.

All right, but the acting job to sell the penalty was ridiculous, that was worthy of a unsportsmanlike penalty itself. And of course the Canadiens fans wanted a five-minute major on Pouliot. Thoughts?

CareyPrice hurt by Chris Kreider, Price's status unknown

In re-watching this video, I am not seeing an intent by New York Rangers forward Chris Kreider. Looks like he's coming with speed and gets tripped up by the Canadiens defender. Could Kreider have avoided contact with Price? I don't think he could have base on how fast he was skating.

Apparently, the head coach of the Montreal Canadiens Michel Therrien thinks that Kreider didn't do enough to avoid contact with Carey Price.
Therrien reiterated that he felt the incident between Kreider and Price was "accidental," but took a thinly veiled shot at the Rangers' forward as well. "Let's put it this way, he didn't put much effort to avoid the contact," Therrien said. (Katie Strang, ESPN.COM)

(Video) Derick Brassard Injured After Hit From Mike Weaver

It's better to be the hammer than the nail. New York Rangers forward Derick Brassard is injured after a clean, hard check by Canadiens defenseman Mike Weaver. Brassard left the game and didn't return.

(Video) Sidney Crosby cup checks Dominic Moore after being mugged by him

First, I am not a fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins by any stretch of the imagination, but in this case I don't blame Sidney Crosby for being upset. Shouldn’t the ref call the penalties as they present themselves? The blatant holding the stick, is a penalty in high school, college and in the NHL.

The treatment that Crosby has been given during the playoffs, that has gone uncalled is ridiculous. Does the NHL want their star players out with injuries or concussions?

Also, what is Crosby supposed to do? Dominic Moore has Sid’s stick and won’t let go, that’s should be a penalty, so Crosby stuck him. While we don't want to see players spearing their opponents, sometimes the opponents should expect "something" in return, especially when they do stuff like this.

You have to give kudos to Chris Kunitz for sticking up for his fellow teammate as well. Can you imagine what former Oilers tough guy Dave Semenko would have done, if someone had done this to Wayne Gretzky? There would have been blood on the ice.

Henrik Lundqvist: Rangers Consistent Star when Struggling to Score

Well the New York Rangers will have their work cut out for them if they are able to surpass the offensive talented Pittsburgh Penguins in the second round, especially after the grinding seven game series against the Flyers. However, the Rangers do have one trump card in their hands, and that is goalie Henrik Lundqvist.

With the New York Ranger power play being terrible in these playoffs, not getting many scoring chances and giving up shorthanded rushes, Lundqvist has always been there to save the day. Hank is posting a 2.07 goals against average and a .926 save percentage, which are outstanding numbers in any league, but has a playoff record of 5-4 because the lack of offensive support for the annual Vezina Trophy worthy goaltender.

So far in the series against Pittsburgh, two games, "King" Henrik has made 36 and 34 saves respectively only allowing two goals in each of those contests. The Rangers need to start to find ways to put pucks in the net to support their goalie, who is giving the Rangers chances to finish games in the win column every single night.

As addressed briefly earlier, the Rangers are struggling putting pucks in the net, especially from their power play and big gun Rick Nash. Their power play has hit just three times out of 37 attempts, or at a 8.1% success rate. You can't get very far in the playoffs if you aren't scoring with the extra man.

Now for the struggles of superstar power forward Rick Nash not being able to find the net. Going into tonight, Nash lead the NHL during the playoffs in shots on goal with 37, but has yet to find the twine. One can only think that he will break through soon and open the floodgates, but will it be too little too late against the offensive powerhouse Penguins? Maybe, but if Sidney Crosby ends his goal scoring troubles before Nash, and the rest of the Rangers are able to find the net more, this series doesn't go more than five games unless Hank is able to steal the Rangers some victories.

Pittsburgh Penguins: James Neal goal against the New York Rangers (Video)

I am not sure why New Yorks Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist was upset? After watching the video, it was obvious that Evgeni Malkin never touched the puck with his stick. Pens forward James Neal was credited with the goal.
