Frattin's goal against OKC

s/t to @BrittsLyfe for posting this on Twitter... Check out this goal by Toronto Marlies forward Matt Frattin. Frattin's team the Toronto Marlies ended up beating  former Fighting Sioux alumni Chris Vandevelde and Taylor Chorney's team the Oklahoma City Barons.

I am sure this goal by Frattin looks familiar to Fighting Sioux hockey fans who watched the power forward  score a bunch of goals that looked a lot like this one. Notice the goalie also didn't see the puck until it was past him and in the net.

College Hockey well represented

The more I looked around the Leafs official web sight, the more I realized college hockey's contribution to this game and the Toronto Marlies. If you look at the box score from this game you will see that college hockey was well represented - three former WCHA players scored three of the five goals for the Marlies in tonight's game, Jake Gardiner (UW), Matt Frattin (UND) and Joe Colborne (DU).

Also, former RPI forward Jerry D'Amigo leads the Marlies in points for the Calder Cup playoffs.

The starting goalie for the Marlies is former Cornell Star Ben Scrivens who has started every games for the Marlies during the playoffs and was up for a while with the Maple Leafs during the regular season.

Matt Frattin vs Marcus Foligno

Former Fighting Sioux forward and current Toronto Maple Leafe Matt Frattin isn't know for his fighting skills, nor do I see him picking up the role as the Leafs goon. That was Frattin's first career fight in the NHL.

Personally, I have to give him credit for standing up for a teammate, Foligno's hit on Bozek was questionable and border line dirty and I admire a players stepping up and answering the bell even if he doesn't fight.

In tonight's game against the Buffalo Sabres, the leafs rookie Frattin had the Gordie Howe Hat Trick tonight by scoring a goal, and assist and a fight.

Frattin scored his eighth goal of the season tonight, here is the video to that goal [Click to view].
Frattin now has (8g-7a—15pts) in 54 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs this season.

As soon as the NHL regular season is over, the Leafs are not going to be in the Stanley Cup playoffs, Frattin will play in the AHL's  Calder Cup playoffs with the Toronto Marlies.

Frattin's 6th goal of the year

In his fourth game back since his call up, former Fighting Sioux all-American forward Matt Frattin scores for the Maple Leafs to tie the game against the Montreal Canadians. That's the sixth goal of the year for Frattin.

20 questions with former Sioux Matt Frattin

I really enjoyed this interview that Former Fighting Sioux All-American forward Matt Frattin did for the Toronto Maple Leafs web site. Notice his favorite goal was the game winner in the Final Five against DU.

Matt Frattin and Adam McQuaid collision

s/t to a Tradition of Excellence Check out this collision between former Fighting Sioux forward Matt Frattin and Boston Bruins defenseman Adam McQuaid, both men are about the 200 pound range. It's like two trains colliding.

Matt Frattin's second career goal.

Check out this goal from former Fighting Sioux all American and current Maple Leaf forward Matt Frattin, this goal closed the score to 4-3 before the Bruins scored two more goals. I have a feeling that Frattin is going to score many more goals in his NHL career.

Edit: On an unrelated note, here are the Bruins games against the Leafs this season. Total domination = the Bruins outscoring the Leafs 19-5.

FINAL TOR (2) - BOS (6)
FINAL BOS (7) - TOR (0)
TSN FINAL BOS (6) - TOR (3)

Addendum: Some people have taken exception with my statement of the Bruins dominating the Leafs in a blog post after last night’s game.  Point of clarification; in the three games Boston Bruins have played against the Maple Leafs this season, the Boston Bruins outscored the Leafs 19-5.  I don't think it is a stretch to put that in the domination category; I am not sure what else we would call that?

While the Leafs out-shot the Boston Bruins 39-37 during last night’s game, I sometimes think the shots stat is one of the most over used and meaningless stats in hockey. Like my buddy Trin says, “you can beat people over the head with stats but the only one that matters is the final score at the end of the game.”

Matt Frattin's shootout goal against the Jets.

Former Fighting Sioux forward Matt Frattin scored on one of his patented snapshots in third round of the shootout to give the Toronto Maple Leafs a 4-3 win shootout win over the visiting Winnipeg Jets. Frattin played 13:58 during tonight's game. Leafs forward Nazem Kadri who just recently returned from MCL injury was actually sent to the Toronto Marlies in stead of Matt Frattin.

Burke on Frattin - “He’s going to get a good look in camp.”

With the new season comes new chance for former Fighting Sioux hockey players to get their shot at playing in the NHL, this season former Fighting Sioux power forward Matt Frattin is making an early impression and has a decent chance of making the NHL out of the Toronto Maple Leafs training camp.
Kevin McGran; The Star --- One of few players who may actually get some ice time with the Leafs this year is Matt Frattin, easily the best player on the ice Tuesday night. The puck followed him around, it seemed. He scored the Leafs’ first goal, on a fine feed from defenceman Jake Gardiner.

It was a power-play goal with Frattin — a forward — playing the point.

“He clearly showed some of what he can do and I think he still has more to give,” Eakins said of Frattin. “We used him in all situations. We had him on the point on the power play, up front on the power play, 5-on-5, 4-on-4, penalty killing and he wasn’t falling away. It looks like he’s fairly fit as well.”

At 23, Frattin was one of the older players at the four-team tournament. It was expected he would dominate and he did. GM Brian Burke was impressed.

“I think he’s a good player,” Burke said of Frattin. “He’s going to get a good look in camp.”

Hockey is in the air...

Waking up this morning I noticed some frost on the roof of my garage and have come to the conclusion that our short summer in the north land is officially now over and the hockey season is upon us. The Fighting Sioux hockey team play their exhibition game on October 1st against Regina 16 days from now.

Some of the first media and pseudo media have begun to release their preseason rankings/ballots [Bucky's Fifth Quarter], [Western College Hockey], [Roman Empire]

This is how I see the WCHA shaking out this season.
1. Denver
2. Colorado College
3. North Dakota
4. Minnesota
5. Nebraska-Omaha
6. Wisconsin
6. Minnesota-Duluth
8. Alaska-Anchorage
9. St. Cloud State
10. Bemidji State
11. Michigan Tech
12. Minnesota State

Fratts making an impression

From reading all of the press clipping coming from the Toronto newspapers it sounds like former Fighting Sioux forward Matt Frattin has made quite an impression on the Toronto Maple Leafs brain trust during this week’s rookie camp and Matt Frattin may have a chance to make the Leafs rosters out of training camp.

Frattin looking good at camp [Toronto Sun]
OSHAWA - The playing field is about to level for Matt Frattin.

But the 23-year-old Maple Leafs freshman couldn’t have had a better send-off to training camp as he played in all situations and shone in a 4-3 Leafs loss to the Ottawa Senators in the rookie tournament closer at the General Motors Centre.

“He clearly showed some of what he can do and I think he has more to give,” said Toronto Marlies coach Dallas Eakins, who was behind the Leafs bench. “He didn’t fall away. And it looks like he is fairly fit as well, which is encouraging.”

Frattin played the point on the power play and one-timed a shot past goalie Robin Lehner late in the second period during a man-advantage. He also killed penalties, and his smarts demonstrated why he should have a good shot at winning a spot on the Leafs’ roster when camp breaks. He played in one game for the Leafs last season.
Leaf's Roster has WCHA flavor

If you glance at the Toronto Leafs training camp roster you will see a hint of a WCHA influence. Currently there are seven former WCHA players on the Leaf's training camp roster. [Toronto Maple Leafs training camp roster]

Brad Malone also making an impression with AV's

Sounds like former Fighting Sioux forward Brad Malone is also making an impression with the Colorado Avalanche coaching staff as well. Here is what the Mile High City had to say about Brad Malone.
Brad Malone: The first thing that jumped off the ice about Malone yesterday and was only reinforced today was that he moves well for a guy his size. He's a smooth skater with a long, powerful stride who isn't blessed with great acceleration but has a top speed that won't cause him to be overwhelmed in the NHL. He was focused on firing a few more pucks past goalies today (same for Landy, who he's living with at a hotel near Park Meadows) and used his quick, compact release to pick some corners. Maybe most surprising on the day was some actual hitting showed up as he and Landeskog came together in front of Pickard for an amusing confrontation. Later during the scrimmages Malone received a pretty significant body check from O'Byrne and took it in stride. As they skated down the ice, Malone was definitely looking to let O'Byrne know he saw the number of that freight train and seemed anxious to get into O'Byrne. Sadly, everyone remembered it was day 2 of rookie camp and the two quickly skated away with smiles on their faces. Don't be surprised to see Malone happily lay into O'Byrne this weekend. From what I saw, Malone had himself a pretty solid day and I'm really liking his potential to make an impact on the bottom 6 this season. It may not be immediate but I wouldn't be surprised to see Malone donning an Avs jersey at some point in this campaign.

Frattin ready to break out?

Every time I read the Matt Frattin story it makes me stop and think; what a story, here was a kid that made a few knuckle headed mistakes but he turned his life around and made it right. Like many of the college hockey players that had gotten into trouble in the past; Matt Frattin could have left school and signed a professional hockey contract, instead Frattin chose to go back home get his priorities straight and refocus and rejoin his teammates at the half way point of the 2009-2010 season. Now it appears that Matt is on the cusp to make his mark in professional hockey. Like coach Hakstol said last year, Matt took the hard road to get back to UND, the story was well documented, he worked a few jobs that were less than glamorous and came back to UND like a man that was possessed.
Kevin McGran; Toronto Star --- No one is under the microscope at this four-team tournament more so than Frattin — the only player on the Leaf rookie squad to have played a game in the NHL, and the only one singled out by GM Brian Burke as being ready to challenge for a spot.

That might sound like pressure to some. Not to Frattin.

“It’s a sign that things I’ve been doing last year and through the summer, that (Burke) thinks I’ve been doing the right things,” said Frattin, “and that I can be taking that spot after training camp if I keep doing the right things.”

Frattin’s been doing the right things for some time, after a summer of doing many things wrong.

Frattin’s well-told story of drinking-related hijinks — which got him arrested in the summer of 2009 and suspended from his college program — is far behind him now, but follows him everywhere.

DU's Joe Colborne and UND's Matt Frattin to make Leaf debuts

If you live in Grand Forks, ND or have Midco Net in this area you can watch Matt Frattin play on channel 16 CBC tonight, so Fighting Sioux fans if you don't want to watch/stomach the Frozen Four check out Fratts as he makes is professional debut versus the Montreal Canadiens or "Les Habitants". According to Pension Plan Puppets Matt Frattin, will play on a line with Tyler Bozak and Nazem Kadr. We might get a look into the Maple Leaf's future tonight's line up additions.
The Star ---- Joe Colborne — the 21-year-old prospect the Leafs got from Boston in the Tomas Kaberle trade — will make his NHL debut on Saturday against the Montreal Canadiens.

So will Matt Frattin, the 23-year-old NCAA forward who signed a two-year entry level contract Friday night. Frattin, a finalist for U.S.

Sioux sled past Huskies 11-2 end regular season as top musher...

Kudos to Redwing77 for posting yesterday’s game summary after the game. I couldn’t help my self with thst title… Yesterday's game between the Fighting Sioux and the MTU Huskies was a dismantling in systematic fashion… The Fighting Sioux scored two goals in the first 49 second of the game and before they could announce those two goals the MTU Huskies forward Patrick McCadden scored to make the score 2-1 only 1:23 into the game.

From that point on, it was off to the races for the UND Fighting Sioux hockey team as they skated around, through and over the hapless MTU Huskies 11-2 in Houghton, Michigan. The game was never close from there on out, the score was 6-1 after one period, 9-2 after two periods and the Sioux got two more in the third period crushing the Huskies… Kudos to both teams for not letting it get out of hand in the third period after the score was out of reach.

Watching the MTU Huskies you almost feel sorry for them, they really are a sad bunch, the MTU Huskies have had two 30 loss seasons in a row, and the Huskies have lost 25 games six times in the last eight seasons. I had not realized the Huskies were this bad until I say a twitter exchange last night between UMD Radio voice Bruce Ciskie and RWD. This is the same hockey teams that swept the Sioux in December of 2006 and beat the Sioux in Houghton during the 2007 season.

Balanced scoring

Breaking down the scoring for the Sioux yesterday afternoon - Junior forward Jason Gregoire paced the Fighting Sioux with a hat trick, Freshman forward Brock Nelson and Junior forward Brett Hextall each scored two goals. Chipping in one goal each was the Pony Express line of Matt Frattin, Evan Trupp, Brad Malone and freshman Derek Rodwell. With the win last night the Sioux extended their unbeaten streak to nine games, in cae anyone is keeping score, that’s the third longest in the nation.

A team full of Champions

Senior Forward Matt Frattin is the points champ in the WCHA with (22g-18a-40pts). Junior Forward Jason Gregoire was 7th with (18g-13a-31pts) Gregoire missed four games because of injury.

Goals Scoring

Matt Frattin was first in the WCHA for goal scoring for the Fighting Sioux with 22 goals, DU Forward freshman forward Jason Zucker was second with 20 goals, UMD’s forward Mike Connolly was third with 19 goals and Jason Gregoire was fourth with 18 goals.

Assists

Corban Knight proved to be a good set up man for the Fighting Sioux as he tied for second in the WCHA for assists with 21; Jack Connolly from UMD was first with 28 assists.

Goaltending

Sophomore goaltender Aaron Dell is the top WCHA goaltender with a 1.97 GAA. Kent Patterson from the Minnesota Golden Gophers was second with a 2.31 GAA and Kenny Reiter from UMD was third with a 2.32 GAA. We can split hairs all day long and say that GAA is a team defense stat, whatever, everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

High Flying Sioux

The UND Fighting Sioux were the top offensive team in the WCHA scoring 4.00 goals a game, UNO was second 3.36, DU was third with 3.32 and UMN and UMD tied with 3.25.

Stingy on Defense

The Fighting Sioux were the top defensive team in the WCHA giving up 2.21 goals per game, WCHA new comer UNO was second with 2.46, Wisconsin was third 2.57 and the UMD Bulldogs were fourth with 2.61, DU rounded out the top five with 2.68.

Sioux not a bunch of Goons…

Michigan Tech was the most penalized team in the WCHA with Michigan Tech with 15.7 penalty minutes per game, DU tied UMN for second with 15.2 minutes per games, UNO was third with 14.1, and the Fighting Sioux were fifth with 13.9, C.C. was sixth with 13.8.

Top Power Play in the WCHA

The Fighting Sioux have the top power play in the WCHA scoring on 23.3 percent of their power play chances, UMD was second with 21.9%, BSU was third with 21.2%, SCSU was fourth with 19.3% and Minnesota was fifth with 18.8.

Top Scoring Team in the WCHA

The Fighting Sioux were the top scoring team in the WCHA with 112 goals, Second was UNO with 94 goals, third was DU with 93 goals, Minnesota tied with UMD for fourth with 91 goals and SCSU was sixth with 84 goals. Just for the Record the Fighting Sioux are also the 2nd ranked team in scoring nationally and are currently ranked 8th nationally on defense as well.

Matt Frattin makes the INCH Hobey Tracker

Nice to see Matt Frattin get some recognition from the College Hockey pundits. So props to the boys at INCH for putting Frattin in their Hobey Tracker…
MATT FRATTIN
North Dakota | Sr. | Forward
To Date: 35 GP, 27-15–42

The Skinny: The Matt Frattin goal machine keeps turning on the red light and potted three more this past weekend in a sweep of Bemidji State that helped North Dakota clinch the MacNaughton Cup. Frattin is tied for second nationally with 27 goals on the year, and has been particularly hot down the stretch. He’s scored seven goals in North Dakota’s last seven games, and the Sioux are 6-0-1 in that span. Frattin is the leading scorer on one of the nation’s top teams, and among a talented group of forwards, there’s no doubt that he’s the guy you’ve got to keep the closest eye on to slow down North Dakota.

Frattin for Hobey Baker... Why not?

I think that when we start talking about candidates for the Hobey Baker Matt Frattin’s name has to be in the mix, look that the year Frattin is having (17g-8a-25pts), I would say that Frattin has been a man among boys this season. Immediately you will hear about Frattin’s checkered past, I think that’s fair, however, I think the article written by Brad Elliot Schlossman this past weekend, The Road to Redemption is the first step in the right direction because the article brings to light some information that could help sway the committee.

I the reason I think the committee can be swayed is that Matt Frattin could have taken the easy route that other players have and just signed a professional but instead he decided to get his act together and deal with his personal issues and he didn't avoid them but met them head on.

The fact that the University of North Dakota pulled Frattin’s scholarship and Matt Frattin had to pay his own way is even more impressive to me, he could have said screw this… Matt could have just signed the professional contract and taken the money and moved on to the Toronto Maple Leafs but he decided that he had some unfinished business at UND to take care of. Frattin took care of his personal issues worked his butt off to stay in shape worked on the side and went to counseling and I think that is a testament to the kind of guy that Frattin is.

I have known adults that wouldn’t have taken these steps to make things right, they would just moved on and been done with it. Frattin took the path not always traveled came back probably a better player and a better person. Like I said over on Sioux Sports; “let he who is without sin cast the first stone", life is about lessons and we learn from our mistakes and none of us are perfect. I also don’t think any of the previous Hobey Baker Memorial Candidates were either.

Don’t worry Leafs fans, help is on the way… (Matt Frattin)

I posted this over on Pension Plan Puppets. S/T to Brad Schlossman for an awesome article, like Chuck Schwartz tweeted last week; Brad is one of the best beat writers in the business and as Sioux fans we are blessed to have him… I read the article four times and it really is a touching piece, the article kind of puts life in perspective and goes to show there is more life than sports... I am sure glad Matt decided to come back to UND and not sign a professional contract. Frattin manned up and faced the music and got his life together.

Leaf’s Fans I have had a chance to watch Matt Frattin play for the UND Fighting Sioux for 3 seasons and I think you’re going to like what Matt Frattin brings to the table. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he is wearing a Maple Leaf next season.

Matt Frattin is a big strong power forward (6 feet 206 lbs) and has a howitzer for a shot, Frattin shots the puck through goaltenders, and you can find many goals on YouTube.com. Frattin isn’t a one dimensional player, Matt plays strong in all three zones of the ice and his skating are one of his stronger points.

Matt Fratt was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 4th round of the 2007 NHL Entry Draft. Just before the 2009-2010 school year was about to begin Matt Frattin got into trouble and was dismissed from the Fighting Sioux hockey team and returned to Edmonton, Alberta to get his life in order. At the semester break Frattin was given a second chance by Fighting Sioux head coach Dave Hakstol and Matt has caught fire and is on a torrid pace. Grand Forks Herald beat writer Brad Schlossman has a nice article about Matt’s past few seasons.
Grand Forks Herald --- Matt Frattin is a notorious prankster. So, when he called Evan Trupp last August to say that he had gotten in trouble and was getting kicked off the UND hockey team, Trupp naturally thought it was a joke.

But this time, it wasn’t.

After his second alcohol-related run-in with police in two months — this time a DUI charge he later would be acquitted of — Frattin was dismissed just days before the 2009-10 school year was set to start.

He packed up and moved back home to Edmonton, Alberta, to ponder his future. And while UND left the door open for his return in 2010-11, it seemed likely that his time in Grand Forks was finished.

After all, the easy route was for Frattin to cash in on the NHL contract that the Toronto Maple Leafs offered and pick up his hockey career right away in the pro ranks. Frattin thought about it, and took a different path.

He decided to change his lifestyle, sit out for up to a year and attempt to return to UND to make things right. He’s back here now, 16 months later, on his road to redemption. Frattin is the nation’s leading goal-scorer, with 17 goals, and it’s not even Christmas.
So how hot has Frattin been, Matt has scored 11 goals in 13 games last season from Feburary 12th to March 27. Fast forward to this season Frattin has continued that torrid pace scoring 17 goals in 20 games, so if my math is right (I am a sociology major), that is roughly 28 goals in 33 games. [click to link]
