Sweet goal by the former UND fighting Sioux forward Brad Malone, known to many of us in the NoDak Nation as simply Pony. Sweet goal.

Erik Johnson suspended two games by the NHL
Former Gopher and current Colorado Avalanche Eric Johnson has been suspended two games by the NHL for his dirty slash on New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen. Personally, I think it should be longer.
NEW YORK - Colorado Avalanche defenseman Erik Johnson has been suspended for two games, without pay, for slashing New York Islanders forward Frans Nielsen during NHL Game No. 878 in New York on Saturday, Feb. 8, the National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety announced today. The incident occurred at 12:09 of the third period. Johnson was assessed a minor penalty for slashing. Under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and based on his average annual salary, Johnson will forfeit $38,461.54. The money goes to the Players' Emergency Assistance Fund.

Nielsen was skating for a loose puck in the Avalanche's zone when Johnson slashed him on the wrists with 7:54 left in the third period. Johnson was given a two-minute penalty on the play.
The following grounds for the proposed supplemental discipline are being considered: slashing. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to these infractions accordingly upon further review

Big hit by the Av's Jamie McGinn on Wild defenseman Nate Prosser. To add injury to insult, the Avalanche forward John Mitchell scores a weak goal on Minnesota Wild goalie Darcy Kuemper.

Colorado Avalanche: Don't go in Semyon Varlamov crease
We had an old saying in football, don't go in the kitchen, if you don't want to get hit. Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov was none too pleased with Winnipeg Jets defenseman Dustin Byfuglien after put his glove in the face of the Av's goalie. It could get ugly next time the two teams play. The two teams play a couple more times in March.

Apparently, former Fighting Sioux All-American forward Zach Parise has a very high tolerance to pain and will be playing in tonight's game against the Colorado Avalanche. Originally, Parise was slated to be out 2-3 weeks. This is good news for the Minnesota Wild.
Parise on line rushes w first line. Haula centering line 2. Fontaine indeed the scratch if Parise feels he can go, which he does :) #mnwild

Former Maine goalie "Big" Ben Bishop is 6'7" tall, that's a very tall goalie. Daren Pang is 5'5" tall, and he's very short goaltender. I once met Panger when I was working the check point at the GFK airport after World Juniors in 2005, he's really not a very big man.

Cody McLeod has in person hearing for hit on Niklas Kronwall
#Avalanche Cody McLeod has earned an in-person hearing with the #NHL for his hit on #Redwings Nik Kronwall. Date TBD.
— Nick Kypreos (@RealKyper) October 18, 2013
Here's the good news, Colorado Avalanche forward Cody McLeod is set to have the book thrown at him. The Colorado Avalanche forward has in person hearing for hit with the NHL Department of Player Safety, for his dirty, bush league, unnecessary hit on Red Wings Defenseman Niklas Kronwall. Logic is, with an in person hearing, he's going to get a least a 5-game suspension. If I was McLeod, I would be a bit worried. Buffalo Sabres "Rat" Patrick Kaleta was given a 10-game suspension after an in person hearing for his dirty hit on Jack Johnson. Of course, he's going to appeal that suspension.
NHL.COM -- Avalanche left wing Cody McLeod will have a hearing with the NHL Department of Player Safety for a boarding incident during Thursday's game against the Detroit Red Wings at Pepsi Center.
McLeod was offered the opportunity for an in-person hearing as required by provisions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement for any suspension that can exceed five games.
At 2:13 of the first period, McLeod was assessed a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding Detroit's Niklas Kronwall. Kronwall remained down and was taken from the ice on a stretcher. He did not return. After the game, the Red Wings announced Kronwall sustained a concussion and cuts to his right ear.
The following grounds are being considered for supplemental discipline: boarding. However, the Department of Player Safety retains the right to make adjustments to the infraction upon review.
Detroit won the game, 4-2.

Cody McLeod's inexcusable hit on Niklas Kronwall
There's no excuse for this duty, senseless, hit by the Colorado Avalanche hack Cody McLeod. This hit should garner McLeod at least five games, there is no way that you can defend this hit. If you watch the video you will see that McLeod targets the head of Red Wings defenseman Niklas Kronwall, with his elbow, knocking him out and sending him off the ice on a stretcher.

Brad Stuart rocks Gabriel Landeskog
This was the hit that everyone was talking about yesterday. The Sharks defenseman Brad Stuart absolutely destorys the Av's forward Gabriel Landeskog with what appears to be a legal hit. I don't think it's a violation of rule 48. Or is it?
Rule 48 - Illegal Check to the Head
48.1 Illegal Check to the Head – A hit resulting in contact with an opponent's head where the head is targeted and the principal point of contact is not permitted. However, in determining whether such a hit should have been permitted, the circumstances of the hit, including whether the opponent put himself in a vulnerable position immediately prior to or simultaneously with the hit or the head contact on an otherwise legal body check was avoidable, can be considered.

Av's Hack McLeod will not be suspended
This tweet is from Mike Chambers of the Denver Post. Let me be clear, my beef is not with the Denver Post but with the NHL. NHL Senior Vice President of Player Safety is a fraud and is no better than his much maligned predecessor Colin Campbell. BReynolds from the Hockey Wilderness has done a great job of laying out the argument where the NHL has gone wrong. This latest ruling by the Lack of Player Safety is a joke. Am I upset with the ruling, you bet I am.
Next time out the Minnesota Wild should go out and run the top player of their opponents through the end boards because the NHL is not serious about eliminating these types of hits from the game of hockey, and why not, everyone else is doing it to the Wild and getting away with it.

The day after the McLeod hit on Spurgeon
I don't like this hit one bit and these types of dangerous hits need to be eliminated from the game of hockey. Even today after watching the hit some more, I am not changing my opinion one bit. The hit is dangerous, senseless and unnecessary.
You have a player like Cody McLeod that is at best a third line player in the NHL taking out a top defensive player for the Wild. Again, the refs rescued the offending player McLeod before anyone from the Minnesota Wild could get to McLeod to have him answer for that Bush League hit.
To also suggest that Spurgeon is responsible for being plastered into the boards is also ridiculous. I have also seen Avalanche fans defending this hit and Cody McLeod.
According to Michael Russo, after the game Wild Coach Mike Yeo was unimpressed with the McLeod hit. Yeo went so far to suggest that the Av's players were targeting Spurgeon during the game.
"I didn't like the hit one bit," Wild coach Mike Yeo said. The next time the Wild play the Avalanche this hit has to be answered for and Wild need to respond appropriately. I also predict that McLeod will get nothing in the way of a suspension from the National Hockey League.
Yeo didn't have an update on Spurgeon immediately after the game, but he did have a strong opinion. He said he felt the Avalanche might have been targeting Spurgeon. "They hit him from behind two shifts before that," he said. "And I thought that one could have been called, too. I thought that one was dangerous. So twice ... five minutes into the game?"

Malone vs. Malone
Image via WikipediaFormer Fighting Sioux forward Brad Malone who now plays for the Colorado Avalanche will be playing his cousin former SCSU Huskies Ryan Malone's team the Tampa Bay Lightning tonight.
Mike Chambers, Denver Post ---- [Brad]Malone is the cousin of Avalanche rookie forward Brad Malone.
“Pretty excited, obviously, because he’s one of those guys growing that up I looked up to,” Brad Malone said. “Any opportunity to skate with him in the summer is pretty exciting, so to now go up against him here is pretty special.”
Brad Malone, 22, began his pro career with the Lake Erie Monsters of the American Hockey League. He was called up Dec. 8 and made his NHL debut the following night at Edmonton. He has played left wing on the Avs’ third line in the past three games, and has an assist in each of the last two. His helper in Thursday’s 3-2 win over St. Louis was on Jay McClement’s game-winning goal. The kid remains in the lineup, even though Brandon Yip is back from a groin injury, and Malone will unquestionably stick around for a while — at least until Chuck Kobasew (head) and David Jones (groin) — and possibly Peter Mueller (head) — return from injuries.

Tuesday Links.
Here is the video from the third period of the Minnesota and MTU game. The Tech Hockey Guide has a good break down of the events and what happened Saturday Night.
There is two sides of every story and all week long we have heard how the Tech Huskies were the ones that were to blame but it sounds like after a spirited weekend of hockey the emotions of both teams took over.
Stephen Anderson , The Daily Mining Gazette --- In a game that already had a major contact to the head penalty, five-minute high sticking call and a 10-minute misconduct, Tech defenseman Carl Nielsen exchanged blows with Minnesota's Seth Helgeson, followed shortly after by a heated verbal exchange between Muckalt and Minnesota's coaching staff. What does this mean going forward? It means that every game is going to be contested and there are not give me's in the WCHA this season. There aren't going to be any breeze game against the bottom rung teams. You will not just be able to pencil in wins before the series have begun.
"I'd prefer not to really discuss it. I got my point across," Muckalt said, as evidenced by the video footage on USCHO.com's WCHA blog (bit.ly/ubnW4p).
"Hockey is a passionate emotional game, and as coaches we stand up for our players and support our players. We're proud of our players and really that's all there is to it," he added.
When asked whether it was something unsportsmanlike that Minnesota did to spur the exchange, Muckalt said, "That would be a safe bet, but at the end of the day, that's in the past."
I haven't seen this much parity in the league from 1-10 spots in a very long time and don't expect it change this season. The second half of the season is going to be a war and the Gophers and Dogs can expect it from here on out.
I am not sure what it is but whatever reason the Denver Post Writers do not like Brad Malone, we get it, you don't like him. I also am sure that the coaching staff will have a talk with Brad Malone about his performance in practice if he isn't going 100 percent. My next question is; what's the point of this blog post? Maybe I am missing something? This the same guy [Adrian Dater] that maligned Cal Clutterbuck, so maybe I am expecting to much from this guy.
In the video I see other players lagging as well. I just find it puzzling that there are 23+ guys at the Avalanche practice and the Denver Post happens to call out Malone.
A couple of things: Sacco stood there and watched everyone pretty closely it seemed like. The guys who lagged behind probably didn’t help themselves – and rookie Brad Malone was one. He was totally gassed and seemed to take his sweet time getting back to the end line after Sacco gave everyone a brief break. The rest of the team was there at the end line ready to go again, but Malone kind of glided on in while everyone waited. That was noticeable to some veteran hockey people watching in the stands, not just me. [All Things AV's]
