DU vs. UND, College Hockey's Hatfields and McCoys

I was checking out youtube.com today and found few blasts from the past. This week, UND plays their heated rival, the Denver Pioneers. Ironically, this will be UND first series against the Pioneers as the Fighting Hawks. Under the new nickname, UND is 3-1-0.

While George Gwozdecky is gone, the Pioneers and the Fighting Hawks still hate each other. As of Late, the Pioneers have probably become UND's top rival. The players from both teams look forward to playing in this series.

Some will ask, why is this series so heated? Well, there have been a lot of high-stakes games between the two teams.

During the 2010-11 season, UND beat DU 3-2 (2ot) in the Final Five and then turned around and beat DU 6-1 in the NCAA regional the next weekend.  Last season, UND lost to DU in the third-place game of the Frozen Faceoff 5-1. I imagine UND might be looking for a little payback.

This is by far the oddest thing that I have ever seen happen in a college hockey game. Gwoz was thrown out of the game and then walked across the ice to talk to the officials. After being tossed from the game, Gwoz was caught in the press box communicating with the DU bench.

Lately, there hasn't been a lot of after the whistle stuff between the two teams. Honestly, I don't' think you're going to see any of the big scrums or fights after the whistle this weekend. There's way too much to lose and no-one wants to get thrown out of the game and suspended for the next game. Fighting in hockey is kind of going the way of the dodo bird.

When the Fighting Hawks play the Pioneers you will see some good up and down the ice action. Both teams have very active defense and this weekend's series should be exciting.

For some reason, on-ice official Todd Anderson has officiated a lot of the UND vs. DU series. For whatever reason, whenever he's reffed the DU vs. UND series, it has been like throwing gas on the fire. There was going to be some action on the ice.

Friday before the Storm Links

It's crunch time, the final push to the NCAA playoffs. Selection Sunday, the regionals... Some college hockey teams are fighting for their playoff lives. This is is the best time o the year.

Sifting Through the Debris on Saturday Morning

LSSU Lakers logo
Yesterday I said this at the Hockey Writers... I almost ended up eating my words.

Series prediction

Let’s take a look at the numbers. The Lake Superior State Lakers are ranked 58th nationally in team winning percentage. The Lakes are also currently ranked 54th in the all-important Pairwise Rankings. Keep in mind that there are only 59 teams in division I college hockey.

They say that the numbers don’t lie. On paper this series “should” be a miss match. Statistically, comparing the two teams numbers it’s not even close.

Last weekend, the Lakers were outscored 10-0 by the Minnesota State Mavericks. The Lakers are currently ranked 56th overall in-goal scoring. The Lakers offense is anemic they’re scoring 1.69 goals per game. On the defensive side of the ice, the Lakers are ranked 55th overall. The Laker are giving up 3.88 goals per game.

On paper, this series looks like a practice session. That being said, this has the making of being a trap series. I don’t see UND taking the Lakers lightly, coach Hakstol will have his team prepared.

Prediction: UND sweeps (5-2 W, 7-1 W).

This morning I am going on Steve's Sports Saturday.

UND Splits with SCSU

The University of North Dakota hasn't had a series sweep against St. Cloud State Huskies at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center since the 1998-99 season. With Friday's 3-1 loss, UND will leave St. Cloud with that streak still intact.
On Friday night, junior forward Jonny Brodzinski was nothing short of amazing. UND had no answer for the Huskies power forward who scored (2g-1a—3pts).  With the game tied at 1-1 after two periods, Brodzinski’s scored two goals in the third period to ice the game for the Huskies. Brodzinski also broke a three-game goalless streak. For his career, Brodzinski has scored 50 goals in 92 games.
UND junior forward Drake Caggiula scored the lone goal for UND. Caggiula came into Friday's game as the NCAA point's leader, but fell to second place after RIT Tigers forward Matt Garbowsky scored (2g-2a—4pts) against the Sacred Heart Pioneers.
Over the last four seasons, UND hasn't had a lot of success against the Huskies, but they did manage to earn a series split with a 3-2 win on Saturday night.  Freshman forward Trevor Olson scored a pair of goals to pace UND.
With the win, UND improves to (9-3-1 and 4-2-0 NCHC). UND is 5-8-1 in their last 14 games against the Huskies. Next weekend, UND entertains the Nebrasak-Omaha Mavericks in an important two-game conference series.
With the loss, the Huskies drop to (5-6-1 and 2-3-1 NCHC). Next weekend, the Huskies travel to Bemidji to play the Beavers in a two-game non-conference series at the Sanford Center.

ASU to add College Hockey?

English: Lindenwood Univ. vs Univ. of Illinois...
English: Lindenwood Univ. vs Univ. of Illinois Ice Hockey (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
This is a story that keeps popping up. I sometimes wonder if there will eventually be a few western team added to college hockey. I also think a natural fit would be the NCHC.
College Hockey News --- (Ray) Anderson acknowledged that Arizona State would likely have to go the route of schools like Penn State, which used a large donation to start a men's and women's program together, build a rink, and endow the programs going forward.

"If the financial support is there, you can go field teams and satisfy Title IX equity. I believe that very firmly," Anderson told the blog.

"If somebody comes up and completely wants to fund men's ice hockey, it will be our responsibility as an institution to say, let's figure a way to financially go out and gather the support so that we can satisfy the Title IX and give other opportunities to women."

Other schools, like Bowling Green and Miami, have raised funds to perpetually endow the program. Estimates are that it takes approximately $40 million to do so, with an annual operating budget of approximately $1 million. Then there's the matter of building the new rink.

Johnny Gaudreau's Amazing Goal versus Germany

Another former college hockey player with an amazing goal at the World Championships. This goal by former Boston College Eagale forward Johnny Gaudreau's helped lead Team USA’s 5-4 victory German this past Tuesday at the World Championships. This might be a preview of thing to come in Calgary.

ND Lake Region Basketball Head Coach Joe Kittell on the Division I Hockey Tourney

This is what happens when you compare other major division I sports to division I college hockey. College Hockey is a different animal. The nice thing about college hockey is that the small schools can compete against the bigger schools. There's a level playing field, at least in theory. You can see the whole thing by reading the twitter feed of coach Joe Kitell.

Blast from the past: Vannelli vs.McMahon

The date was October 24, 2004, the Minnesota Gophers beat the UND Fighting Sioux on the score board 6-0. UND would get the best of the Gophers in the physical department. Something you don't see very often in college hockey, a full out knock down fight.

MIN-5 Alex Goligoski (2-Roughing) 20:00
MIN-6 Garrett Smaagaard (2-Roughing) 20:00
MIN-7 Mike Vannelli (5-Fighting) 20:00

Your Hobey Baker Memorial Award Winner, There's Probably no Question

Again, another great free image from Getty Images. From my post that I wrote at the Hockey Wilderness today.  This should put a lot of things into context for you.
The Big Red line of left wing David Hukalo (15g-24a—39pts), center Steve Reinprecht (26g-40a—66pts) and right wing Dany Heatley (28g-28a—56pts) lite up the college hockey world.
Just or comparison sake, the Boston College forward line of leftwing Johnny Gaudreau (32g-37a—69pts), center Bill Arnold (12g-36a—48pts, and rightwing Kevin Hayes (24g-32a—56pts) is the best line in college hockey this season.
The Big Red Line of the Wisconsin Badgers was a very good forward line, there's no disputing that, they scored 161 points combined during the 1999-00 season. Check this out, the line that Boston College forward Johnny Gaudreau is a member is on, has scored an eye popping 173 points this season. That's 12 points past the storied Wisconsin line. Also, that line has at least one more game left to play this season. You have to wonder what kind of damage they can do if they make the Frozen Four and play in the championship game. That's four more games. They could hit 180-200 points combined.

UND Hockey: Zach Yon commits to UND.

On the recruiting front, Roseau forward Zach Yon has committed to UND. It looks like he's a 2015-16 freshman. As soon as we find out, I will let you know.

(Video) Ty Loney's immaculate recovery

The acting job by Ty Loney is worthy of an Academy Award. Seriously, this is the best acting job that I have seen in college hockey this season. I am sorry, but  Loney rolls around on the ice like he's been shot, then miraculously recovers to score the goal on the five-minute power-play. I didn't think this was worthy of a five-minute power play.

UND Hockey: If the season ended today, and it doesn't end today... But....

As I have said before, there's a lot of college hockey season left and when some were panicking, I wasn't. If season ended today and it doesn't,  UND would make the NCAA tourney. With the five-game win streak, the 4-2-2 non-conference things look "okay" for UND. Now, I am not going to make any bracketology blog posts or anything like that, but I am just putting things into perspective.

UND Hockey: At look at the numbers

Here's a look at some of the numbers halfway through the college hockey season. The first table is the Strength of Schedule.  As you can see, UND has played the 10th toughest schedule to date. New Hampshire has played the toughest. Also, UND has won five-games in a row and has worked its way back into consideration for an at large bid NCAA tourney bid. Of course the tourney isn't for about 3 1/2 months you can see that UND is in good position. If UND can sweep Bemidji they will have a 4-2-2 Non-Conference record.

Sophomore Bryn Chyzyk suspended from team indefinitely

GRAND FORKS, N.D. – University of North Dakota head men’s hockey coach Dave Hakstol announced today that he has suspended sophomore forward Bryn Chyzyk indefinitely due to a violation of team and athletics department policy.

Hakstol also indicated that any potential reinstatement will not be revisited prior to January 2014 and that no further comment will be provided.

Chyzyk had appeared in 13 of UND’s 16 games this season, registering two goals and two assists.

This tweet will win a lot of fans from the UAH fan base

Yep, I can't let this one pass. Disgrace to college hockey. Hum... Interesting selection of words. The University of Alabama Huntsville  hockey program was almost killed, due to no fault of their own. Geof Morris led a grass roots action to help save the program. The Chargers finally got back into a conference after being in college hockey's version of purgatory for three seasons. I think we should applaud them, not scorn them for hanging on.
