Why Canada’s world junior loss to U.S. should not come as a shock

Here is a good read that I found in the National Post, a major newspaper from Canada. I would have to say that contrary to public belief, the Canadians aren’t going to win a WJC every year. It’s just not possible. I also don’t think that it’s realistic to expect them to win a medal every year either. There are good hockey players all-over the world. The USA has closed the gap between us and the Canadians. Both countries develop good hockey players. That’s a fact.
Cam Cole, National Post --- So Canada’s under-20 national team won’t be playing for the gold medal, after getting clocked 5-1 by the United States Thursday at the world junior championship in Ufa, Russia.

So this means … what? A colossal failure? Cause for a royal commission? A closing of the borders so that those dastardly foreigners — all two of them, per team — can’t play in our major junior leagues, take spots away from our own kids, and then turn around and use what they’ve learned here to beat us over there?

Or is it simply one more chapter in the ongoing story of a sport that now belongs to the elite players of a half-dozen or more nations, not just one or two. To Americans and Swedes, to Russians and Canadians, to Finns and Swiss and Czechs.
This is also a fact that makes me very happy.
Nearly one in four NHLers is an American. And the NHL footprint has greatly increased the number of states that now produce elite junior players.
I have been reading some of the pundits break down the Canadians 4th place finish and you would think that with their line-up that the Canadians had, this would have been their year. But as we know, talent doesn’t always equal victory.

While it’s easy to bag on the Canadians for them not winning the gold. I believe that the Canadians play the game the right way. You don’t see the Canadians flailing all-over ice diving like a bunch of ballerinas. I am pointing my finger at a few of the European teams.

Lastly, going forward in the future, if the USA can’t win the gold, I would much rather see the team wearing Maple Leaf standing at their blue ling singing their national anthem than the Russians or the Swedes any day.

(Video) A Badger and an Eagle lead the way; USA 5 Canada 1

With the win today, the Americans beat the Canadians in the World Junior Championship for just the second time in 11 tries (2/11 .188%). It was sweet watching the Canadians stand in shock at their red line – watching the American flag being raised  – while the Star Spangled Banner was being played.

With the win, the USA will play the Swedes for the IIHF U20 WJC gold on Saturday morning at 7:00 C.T. am.

Leading the way for the Americans was Wisconsin Badgers defenseman Jake McCabe (2g-1a—3pts) and Boston College forward Johnny Gaudreau (2g-1a—3pts). Johnny Hockey now leads the WJC with seven goals. Make that seven goals in three games. Gaudreau is also leading team USA in scoring with (7g-2a—9tps).

I just finished watching the game for a second time, I just think that the Americans out played the Canadians badly. Canada was very sloppy in the defensive zone and the USA got better goaltending.

USA goalie John Gibson has been downright amazing during the WJC; his numbers are eye popping, .954 save percentage and an impressive 1.43 goals against average. Apparently, Canadian defense man Griffin Reinhardt has a hearing with the IIHF disciplinary committee scheduled for his high sticking penalty on USA’s Vincent Trocheck. Reinhardt hit Trocheck in the helmet with his stick. Trocheck was given a two-minute minor penalty for the high stick.

Being a Boston Bruins fan, I am concerned about the play the Canadian goalie Malcom Subban, I think that he has been Canada’s weak link in this tourney. I also have not been impressed with Canadian defenseman and Boston Bruins draftee Dougie Hamilton.

USA's Shayne Gostisbehere cup checks Matus Matis of Team Slovakia

I think this is one of the weakest calls that I have ever seen, notice Matis didn't even go down till he realized I better drop to the ice and flail around so I can draw a major penalty.

This is the typical example of European hockey. I have to be honest, I have begun to tire of some of the on ice antics of the European players, during the 2013 WJC. That's not to say that Shayne Gostisbehere doesn't deserve a penalty for checking to see if Matus Matis is wearing a cup, but In my opinion this isn't worthy of an extra game. What do you think?

Was USA forward Rocco Grimaldi sent a message?

You kind of have to wonder if USA Forward Rocco Grimaldi was being sent a message by USA coach Phil Housley? To be honest with you, I haven't been impressed with very many of the players on team USA this year. It's obvious that Jacob Trouba is a men among boys and Seth Jones has looked pretty good to me, the rest of the team has been kind of underwhelming. There's no "I" in team so we will see what happens going forward. I don't think this version of team USA is all that strong anyways.

Tale of two calls (McCabe & Hartman)

Speaking of bad calls, today, USA captain and Wisconsin Badgers defenseman Jake McCabe was kicked out of the game between the USA and Canada on this play. After watching the video numberous times, I can't find a penalty. In my opinion, McCabe was incorrectly given a two minute minor and a game misconduct for contact to the head. I don't see it. Do you?

Today, the team USA had two contact to the head penalties, the second one was this hit by Ryan Hartman on Canada's Ryan Murphy and that was a legitimate contact to the head. It will be interesting to see if Hartman ends up with a disciplinary hearing for his hit on Murphy.

IIHF suspends Canada's J.C. Lipon for one game.

This hit will cause team Canada to play with only 11 forwards when they play the Americans on Sunday Morning. Two teams have now accused the Canadians of playing dirty. First it was the Russian's Nail Yakupov. Today it was the Slovakians that said the Canadians are dirty.

Like I mentioned earlier today, Slovak Center Tomas Mikus didn't like being run over by J.C. Lipon, “I think, in my eyes, the two hits were dirty,” said Slovak center Tomas Mikus. “It’s not good in a world championship. We accept clear hits but the hands were too high.“Really dirty.” I guess the IIHF found it dirty enough to warrant a one game suspension.

Slovakia's Richard Buri hits Canada's Dougie Hamilton

In one of the odd plays of the day, Slovakia's defenseman Richard Buri hits Canada's defensema Dougie Hamilton. Buri was only given a two minute minor on the play. Team Canada scored on the ensuing power play with a goal by Morgan Rielly assisting on the goal were Mark Schiefele and Oliers star Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

Hamilton is a Boston Bruins first round draft choice who was picked ninth overall during the 2011 NHL entry draft. Hamilton plays for the Niagara Ice Dogs of the Ontario Hockey League.

Slovakia's Tomas Mikus pounded in the head by Canada's J.C. Lipon

Apparently this hit by Canada's J.C. Lipon on Tomas Mikus will get an extra look by the International Ice Hockey Federation and there is a chance that Lipon could face supplementary punishment. That would be a big loss for the Canadians since they are already short handed with the loss of Boone Jenner who was suspended for three games by the IIHF. apparently, Mikus was none too happy with J.C. Lipon.
“In my eyes the two hits were dirty. It’s not good in the world championships. We accept clear hits but the hands were too high. Really dirty,” said Tomas Mikus, who was on the receiving end of a first period hit by J.C. Lipon.
It will be interesting to see if Lipon does in fact get suspended by the IIHF and if he does, for how long? Former NHL Official Dan Marouelli and WCHA Assistant to the Commissioner Jeff Sauer will be conducting Lipon's Disciplinary hearing. If Lipon is suspended Canada will be down for 11 forwards during the USA and Canada game.

Canada's Anthony Camara Destroys Slovakia's Patrik Luza

Canada Anthony Camara recieved a five minute major and a game misconduct for charging for his hit on Slovakia's Patrik Luza. The IIHF will not have a hearing for Camara.

My question to hockey fans is, do you think this hit warrants any supplemental discipline? I think the right call was made for this hit. I looking at the hit, I do think that charging is a good call, Camara kept his elbows down and didn't hit Luza in the head.

USA 8 Germany 2 (Video)

Great to see USA win today... Honestly, Germany is a really bad hockey team and I don't know what we can glean from the USA beating them 8-0 or Canada routing them 9-3? I am sure the Germans will again be in relegation round.

Both the USA and the Canadians were the far better teams and the Germans just don't have the talent that those teams have.

Players that stuck out for me for the Americans were defensemen Seth Jones and Jacob Trouba, they were men among boys, both will be big time players in the NHL probably next season.

The most impressive line for team USA, was the line of Sean Kuraly (Dublin, Ohio/Miami Univ.), Alex Galchenyuk (Milwaukee, Wis./Sarnia Sting) and Reilly Barber (Livonia, Mich./Miami Univ.) this line racked up an impressive three goals and five assists for eight points.

More on the Boone Jenner Hit on Sweden's Pettersson

This is the extended video that one of the reads Rushmore suggested that I put up. This video give a better view of the Boone Jenner hit on Sweden's Jesper Petterson. There is also some analysis from TSN's Bob McKenzie. While I agree that the hit is a suspendable hit, there is no doubt about it, I am still not convinced that this hit is worthy of a three game suspension. I think that a two game suspension would suffice to say the least.

Like Bob McKenzie said in the video, in the National Hockey League anything after half of a second is considered a late hit. So, yeah, you can't hit someone after the half second, I get that, but I also think that the IIHF is taking into account that Jenners has a reupuation of being a hard hitter, I added a hit from last year's WJC. Boone Jenner hammers Finland Defenseman Olli Maatta, during a game between Finland and Canada during the 2012 IIHF WJC.

Boone Jenner Hit on Jesper Pettersson

The team Canada WJC will be without forward Boone Jenner, has been suspended three games by the International Ice Hockey Federation for this late hit on Sweden's Jesper Petterson.

For his efforts on the play, Jenner was given a five minute major for charging and a game misconduct. While the hit was a violent and unneeded hit, three games seems to be a bit stiff. What do you think?

According to the Toronto Star, the Swedish defenseman Petterson suffered a broken wrist and a dislocated shoulder, as you can see by this video, the Swedish defenseman was carried off of the ice on a stretcher.

Idalski - Recruits' concern real.

University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux athl...
University of North Dakota Fighting Sioux athletic logo (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
Next Tuesday "North Dakota" voters will go to the polls to vote on four ballot measures one of the measures is the Fighting Sioux nickname ballot measure 4. My advice to you is to vote with your conscience but there are a few things to remember going forward.

Do not believe the false rhetoric that the sanctions from the NCAA are minimal and or overblown. If the Fighting Sioux nickname is not retired the first team to suffer from the NCAA Sanctions will be the UND Women's Hockey team.

The Fighting Sioux women's team is going to be one of the top teams in Division I hockey during the 2012-13 season - the UND Women have a legitimate chance of winning their first NCAA title based on who is returning to Idalski's squad - they will be hard pressed to make the Women's Frozen Four if they have to travel instead of hosting a quarter final series. The sanctions have more teeth than some want to believe.
Marino Eccher, INFORUM --- They said they wanted to speak out to counter claims by nickname supporters that the consequences of keeping the nickname are overblown.

Idalski said the consequences of the sanctions hit home for him when they came up while recruiting a blue-chip recruit from Canada.

“Her family called me and asked, what does this mean for us?” he said. “Their concerns were very real.”
Before you think about attacking Brian Idalski, or think that he has been told to get in line by the UND Administration, think again, Idalski was speaking out about the NCAA sanctions before the Measure 4 movement became hot and heated -  Idalski has discussed this issue before at the Wednesday press conferences and he voiced his concerns about the consequences of the NCAA sanctions and what they meant to his team. As long as UND is known as the Fighting Sioux UND will never be able to host an NCAA tourney event in anything.

That being said, Idalski has been consistent on this issue - the woman's head coach is a realist - he knows that his team will suffer very soon if the name if the Fighting Sioux nickname is not dropped. This isn't a scare tactic or some over blown pontification.

For the record; all of UND's teams were conforming with the settlement  and the woman's team was in was the first UND hockey team to wear the new jersey's that said "NORTH DAKOTA" on the front of them, the men's hockey team had to wait a little longer and received their new jerseys right before the West Regional.

None of us want to have to drop the Fighting Sioux nickname - but the cost to the University is good big - teams will not play UND as long as they are under NCAA sanctions. Contrary to what some politicians think, the NCAA is not going to budge from their opinion - the NCAA doesn't care how Sioux Country is going to vote - the NCAA has a signed settlement that was signed by the Attorney General of North Dakota. Al Carlson is clueless if he thinks other wise - before you try to call me a democrat or a liberal think again,  think again, I am life long registered republican and I wouldn't vote for Al Carlson, under an circumstances, even if it meant the house or senate would turn from blue to red. I would vote for the Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck instead. My question is; where were this people five years ago when we could have saved the Fighting Sioux nickname?

Here is the Ballot measure again.

The measure as it appears on the ballot reads: This referendum measure concerns Senate Bill 2370 as passed by the Legislative Assembly in the November 2011 special session (Session Laws, Chapter 580). Senate Bill 2370 repealed section 15-10-46 of the North Dakota Century Code, which required the University of North Dakota to use the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

YES – means you approve Senate Bill 2370, the effect of which would allow the University of North Dakota to discontinue the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

NO – means you reject Senate Bill 2370, and would require the University of North Dakota to use the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.

JMFJ scores the game winning goal against the Canadians

Former Michigan Wolverine defenseman Jack Johnson scored the game winning goal at the 1:47 mark of overtime to lead the Americans over the Canadians in the IIHF World Championship.

This was only the fourth time that the American had beaten the Canadians in the World Championship - today's win was the first for the Americans against Canada since 2010 and only the second win against the Canadians since 1985. The Americans are now 2-0-0 in the World Championship.

Bruins draft choice Dougie Hamilton gets 10 Game Suspension

A future Boston Bruins defenseman Dougie Hamilton of the Niagara IceDogs has been suspended by the OHL for this hit. In viewing the video it would appear that a 10 game ban seems about right for this hit.
TORONTO - The Ontario Hockey League suspended Niagara IceDogs defenseman Dougie Hamilton for 10 games Thursday.

Hamilton, who played for Canada at the world junior hockey championship, received the ban for a shot to the head of Sudbury left-winger Michael MacDonald in Niagara's 5-2 victory over the Wolves on Jan. 13.

MacDonald skated into the IceDogs' zone and had his head down as he tried to regain control of the puck after it was been poked free by a Niagara defenseman.

Hamilton connected with MacDonald's head and moved his elbow up into the check, sending the Wolves' captain hard to the ice nearly three minutes into the third period.
