UND Hockey: Where are they now? Aaron Dell

Former UND goalie Aaron Dell was signed by the Abbotsford Heat played two games this past weekend and then was released by the Heat. You would think that Dell is going to get a shot and stick with an AHL team, eventually.
ABBOTSFORD, BC -- The Abbotsford Heat announced today that they have released goaltender Aaron Dell.

Dell, a native of Airdrie, Alberta appeared in two games over the weekend with the Heat registering a 0-1-0 record along with a 1.39 GAA and a .929 save percentage.

Vancouver Canucks: head coach John Tortorella suspended 15 days

The NHL has thrown the book at Vancouver Canucks head coach John Tortorella. The interesting part is that Calgary Flames head coach Bob Hartley has been fined $25,000.00 by the NHL. I guess you could say that the head coaches in the NHL are on notice.

NEW YORK -– Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella has been suspended for 15 days, without pay, for his actions during the first intermission of NHL Game No. 735 in Vancouver on Saturday, Jan. 18, the National Hockey League announced Monday.
"Mr. Tortorella's actions in attempting to enter the Calgary Flames locker room after the first period were both dangerous and an embarrassment to the League," said NHL Senior Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Colin Campbell. "Coaches in the NHL bear the responsibility of providing leadership, even when emotions run high, and Mr. Tortorella failed in his responsibility to the game."
Mr. Tortorella's suspension is effective retroactive to January 19 and runs through Sunday, Feb. 2. He will miss six games. He is not permitted to have any interaction with his club prior to, during or after games.

(Video) John Tortorella on Canucks/Flames line brawl post game presser

Well, Vancouver Canucks coach John Tortorella will have an in person hearing for attempting to confront the  Calgary Flames head coach and for the scrum that erupted in the hall afterwards. You have to think that Torts will be getting a vacation and a hefty fine.

Sunday at the Links: Hockey is on my Mind

Looks like former UMD Bulldog forward Justin Fontaine has made the Minnesota Wild. Former DU Pioneer Jason Zucker has been sent to the Iowa Wild.  With the injury to Mike Rupp, it looks like Fontaine will be used as a fourth line forward for now.

Puck Daddy Takes a look at Josh Harding's goalie mask, it's pretty sweet.

A few things that came out of the WCHA Media Teleconference this past Wednesday. The WCHA and the rest of the NCAA is going to focus on the obstruction and checking from behind calls. I know, I know, we have heard this all before right. We will soon see if they can execute it correctly.

The Calgary Flames have acquired former Boston Bruins and DU Pioneer forward Jumbo Joe Colborne. To be honest with you, Joe could have used a few more years in college instead of bolting early for the professional ranks.

I guess the Minnesota Wild will be giving Justine Fontaine a look after all, I wrote this article earlier this summer and while I am not ready to be the Amazing Carnac, I do think that Fontaine is a good option. Last season during their brief playoff run, the Wild's fourth line looked very slow and now they have added some speed on that forth line. This is the Wild's current fourth line as of today. Corban Knight and His 2013 Calgary Flames Prospect Camp

Calgary's alternate logo, 1999–2007
Calgary's alternate logo, 1999–2007 (Photo credit: Wikipedia)
It sounds like former UND forward Corban Knight had what some would classify as a rough prospects camp with the Calgary Flames. Here's a couple of quotes that I found from a couple of different articles.
Ryan Pike, The Hockey Writers --- Up front, highly-touted prospects Corban Knight and Sven Baertschi arguably disappointed – in that they failed to stand out from the pack during the week. Rather than distinguish themselves as head-and-shoulders above the rest, these contenders for NHL jobs are now joined by Markus Granlund, Michael Ferland, Max Reinhart and perhaps even former Red Deer Rebels captain Turner Elson in the hunt.
While the Flames GM Jay Feaster wasn't very complementry about some of his prospects play during the Flames prospect Camp. Flames coach Troy Ward was even a little more pointed in his criticisms towards some of his players. Here's what the Flames coach Troy Ward had to say about Corban Knight's play, during the Flames prospect camp, that was held in Penticton, B.C.. Yikes!
Scott CRruickshank, CALGARY HERALD --- Monday, 7 p.m. at the WinSport Ice Complex, the Flames play their fourth game in five nights, taking on the University of Calgary Dinos.

Which, apparently, would be an ideal time for Corban Knight to pick it up.

Asked about the play of Knight, Ward didn’t sugar-coat things.

Yes, the centre had scored Sunday — as did Granlund — but the coach demands more.

“To be honest, he’s got to play with some passion, some vigour,” said Ward. “This isn’t college — you’re not going to have the puck all the time. You’re going to have to go get it back. When Corban has the puck, I’m fine with that. But when he doesn’t have it, he’s going to have to play like Ferland . . . and get his nose dirty.” Knight is getting his first taste of pro after four seasons at the University of North Dakota.

Catching up and moving forward

Stanley Cup, on display at the Hockey Hall of ...
Well the NHL playoffs are over. Finally, we can move forward, the College Hockey season is roughly three months away.  The Stanley Cup Playoffs were exciting and a grind as well.

Moving forward, I close one chapter and open another one. Last September, I was invited to write for the Hockey Writers Combine by the former editor Andrew Eide.  The Hockey Writers Editor Bruce Hollingdrake decided that he no longer wanted to have a number of 'off shoot' sites connected to THW.  I was invited to write for the Hockey Writers and I can now be found here as a lead college hockey writer.  Below are two of my latest submissions.

I was also invited to write for the Hockey Wilderness by Bryan Reynolds on his way out the door as editor of the Hockey Wilderness …. So, now I will write a weekly college hockey column or two during the regular season as some Wild related stuff.  Currently, during the summer months, every Saturday afternoon have been writing a weekly column that’s published at 2:00 p.m..

This was one of the latest. Stupid Penalties: Two minutes for taking your helmet off during a fight

I have also continued to write for the new hockey blog Get Real Hockey which is owned by Former NHL great Bernie Nicholls. Click to view

Former UND forward Corban Knight signs with Flames

Former UND forward Corban Knight is taking his talents to his native Alberta, Canada. Knight's rights were  traded to the Calgary Flames and according to TSN's Bob McKenzie, Knight has also signed a two year entry level deal with the Flames.

NHL.com --- The Calgary Flames on Tuesday acquired center Corban Knight from the Florida Panthers in exchange for a fourth-round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

According to TSN's Bob McKenzie, Knight then reached agreement with the Flames on a two-year entry-level contract.

Knight, a 2009 fifth-round (No. 135) selection by the Panthers, just completed his fourth season at the University of North Dakota where he was a top 10 finalist for the Hobey Baker Award as the nation's top collegiate hockey player.

"Corban Knight is a player our scouts have been watching closely throughout his collegiate career," Flames general manager Jay Feaster said in a statement released by the team.

He led the Fighting Sioux in assists (33) and was second in goals (16) and points (49) and third in penalty minutes (40). He finished his college career with 52 goals and 94 assists for 146 points along with 145 penalty minutes in 161 games.

(Video) Jiri Hudler scores and the Wild respond with two goals - Hanowski goal

It was a Wild third period, after an uneventful first two periods. Calgary forward Jiri Hudler scores a beautiful goal and the Wild score two goals by Jason Pominville and Pierre-Marc Bouchard in  1:13, before the Flames scored their second goal.

What was even more interesting, after playing in the Frozen Four this past weekend, former Saint Cloud State Husky Ben Hanowski scored his first NHL goal for the Calgary Flames in his first NHL game.

Jarome Iginla humor

I went to bed last night thinking that my favorite team had received Jarome Iginla in a trade with the Calgary Flames, I woke up this morning to find out that this was not the case. I guess somewhere, there is some humor in this.

Wisconsin Badgers defenseman John Ramage was at the Calgary Flames Development Camp this summer and this video was on the Flames official web page. John is the son of Former NHL great Rob Ramage that also played for the Calgary Flames..

Here is the video of former SCSU Huskies David Eddy who was also at the Calgary Flames development Camp as well.

Kim from Runs on Duncan had this observations of Joe Gleason...
Observations - Joe Gleason really showed off his wheels today. He led some rushes into the offensive zone and got back to backcheck quickly. He was pretty impressive today in his overall game.

Flames sign former Bruins pylon Dennis Wideman

English: Dennis_Wideman of the Washington Capitals
The Calgary Flames just pulled off what many would probably consider as one of the worst moves of the summer to date. In what universe is Wideman worth that kind of money? While Wideman is a is a good offensive defensman -  he is not what I would consider a very good defenseman in the defensive zone and was a minus 26 in 2010-11.

Wideman also has a no movement clause as well.Thank God that Wideman is going to he Calgary Flames and not some team that I follow.
CALGARY, AB – The Calgary Flames announced today that they have acquired and signed defenceman Dennis Wideman from Washington in exchange for Jordan Henry and a 5th round pick in the 2013 NHL Draft.

Wideman, a native of Kitchener, Ontario, has played over 500 career games with 67 goals, 184 assists for 251 points over the course of seven NHL seasons with time spent in St. Louis, Boston, Florida and Washington. Last season with the Capitals, Wideman had his second best offensive season tallying 11 goals along with a team high 35 assists for 46 points in 82 games which tied him for third in team scoring and lead all blue-liners with the Capitals.

Contract terms: 5 year contract with an Average Annual Value of $5,250,000

Spitfires still trying to lure Schmaltz

Windsor Spitfires
It looks like Bob Boughner and the Windsor Spitfires are up to their old tricks again - I guess they are still going to keep pushing and badgering Fighting Sioux incoming Freshman Jordan Schmaltz. Apparently, the Windsor Spit fires didn't get the memo or see the video where Schmaltz said that he's going to UND.
Jim Parker, Windsor Star --- At the NHL Draft Combine in Toronto, the 18-year-old Sieloff, who opted for the Spitfires over Miami of Ohio University, was asked if now he would try to convince fellow prospect Jordan Schmaltz to join him in Windsor.

"Yeah, I'll get on that," Sieloff said. "Definitely, (Schmaltz) would help. That would be a huge pairing for us."

Sieloff and Schmaltz were both NHL picks last week.

Schmaltz was taken in the first round with the 25th overall pick by the St. Louis Blues and Sieloff was selected in the second round with the 42nd pick by the Calgary Flames.

Schmaltz seems adamant he'll play for the University of North Dakota.

"One hundred per cent committed to North Dakota, I think it's going to be great for me," Schmaltz said at the NHL Combine.

Spitfires president and head coach Bob Boughner knows not every player drafted by his club will wind up coming.

You can watch the video again if you want hear what Schmaltz has to say about going to the University of North Dakota...
"Again, North Dakota's the place for me. I just don't think I'm NHL-ready right now, so I think it's that year or two, or maybe even three, to develop that's going to help me."

More Potential Departures...including Coaches (RW77)

Brad Schlossman has stated that Aaron Dell is likely to sign. There have been tweets that suggest that there may be up to 3 more early departures. We know that MacWilliam and Rowney aren't the other 2.

I also doubt Rodwell and Grimaldi will bolt. For Grimaldi it would be ridiculous...unless he's bolting for an entry contract and assignment to Major Juniors (ala BC's Adam Pineault a few years back) but... that would suprise me. I'm pretty certain that one of the two is Danny Kristo. However, I think the third is just a rumor.

As for Dell, the Montreal Canadiens were trying to sign him after last season but I doubt they're in the mix now thanks to GM being fired. Best bet is Calgary, but I wouldn't count out Winipeg.

In either case, it would solve a lot of the conjecture as to what happens to Tate Maris.

And in other news:

Schlossman reports Cary Eades is a candidate for the Mankato job. This isn't a surprise as I'm sure Eades has been a candidate in several head coach gigs since he came back to UND. It would not surprise me if Eades bolts for Mankato either. Mankato plays gritty...which is Eades' forte. Eades' hire may also keep the higher profile recruits they have from bolting.

As for UND, it would be interesting to see what direction they go. Will they promote Dane Jackson to Associate Head Coach and hire an Assistant or will they hire an Associate Head Coach and keep Dane where he is?

If Dane gets promoted, it would not surprise me to see the Assistant position go to... Karl Goehring. He's already working with the team and has done a decent job.

Or... what about Scott Koberinski? He's been helping UND since I was at UND it seems like... (circa 2002 or so). Koberinski has head coaching experience in the USHL.

John Marks and Steve Johnson will pop up. However, the question would be: Would Steve take a lateral job change especially since UND turned him away twice. I'd hope so as I'd love to see Steve back as a coach.

They could go out of left field and hire Tom Ward out of Shattuck? He has WCHA coaching experience, though with the hated Gophers...

In the end, Eades isn't going to stick around forever. And he is destined for a head coaching gig. I think Mankato would be a good gig if he wants it. That being said, I hope he stays.

Luca Sbisa hit on Tim Jackman

Check out this hit by Ducks defenseman Luca Sbisa on Calgary Flames forward Tim Jackman. While Sbisa does hit Jackman in the head, I definitely think the hit in question looks accidental and not malicious.

For the hit in question, Sbisa was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for headbutting Jackman. After the hit, Jackman left the game and didn't return. I don't think the league will give Sbisa any more supplemental discipline.

Bourque suspended five games

Former Wisconsin Badger Rene Bourque has been suspended by the NHL's Senior Vice President of Player Safety Brendan Shanahan for five games for a vicious elbow to the head of Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom this is after being suspended on December 19th by the NHL for his hit on Brent Seabrook. Apparently Bourque doesn't like playing against the Wild, because he has missed the Flames last two games against the Wild. Rene Bourque is a repeat offender and will have served a total of seven games of suspension.
NEW YORK -- Calgary Flames forward Rene Bourque has been suspended for five games and will forfeit $203,252.05 in salary for delivering an elbow to the head of Washington Capitals forward Nicklas Backstrom during NHL Game #563 in Washington on Tuesday, Jan. 3, the National Hockey League’s Department of Player Safety announced today.

Bourque, who was suspended last month, is classified as a repeat offender under the terms of the Collective Bargaining Agreement. Accordingly, he forfeits his salary based on the number of games in the season (82), rather than the number of days (185). The money goes to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.

The incident occurred at 10:06 of the third period. A minor penalty for elbowing was assessed on the play.

Bourque will miss games Jan. 5 at Boston, Jan. 7 vs. Minnesota, Jan. 10 vs. New Jersey, Jan. 12 vs. Anaheim and Jan. 14 vs. Los Angeles. He will be eligible to return Jan. 17 at San Jose.
